by Suliso Sabalenka is on a mission. Sabalenka vs Garcia final now looks better than 50/50 chance.

by ponchi101 Uhm, I say Ons can throw considerable junk at Garcia, and throw her off her game.
I say the four possible combinations will all have 25% chance of happening. (Once semis are over).

by Suliso I don't think I agree that all combinations have an equal chance. None are <5%, but equal certainly not.

by meganfernandez At 4-6 in the TB, down match point, Pliskova threw in a soft first serve to the FH. Sabalenka returned it pretty easily for a winner. Weird serve. Maybe trying to bait a FH error from Sabalenka? I do that against big hitters. But what an odd choice down match point in a Slam.

by ponchi101 If they had told you that Sabalenka would play an entire match NOT facing a single BP, would you believe it?
That was very impressive.

This is someone who was serving underhand at the start of the year. Incredible. And good for her after being banned from Wimbledon.

by Suliso As I said few days ago that Kanepi choke might have given a new life to Sabalenka.

Suliso wrote: Wed Sep 07, 2022 5:38 pm As I said few days ago that Kanepi choke might have given a new life to Sabalenka.
Maybe. Definitely has happened before when a player survives a match point. Caro Australian Open 2018, as I've mentioned before.

by jazzyg If Sabalenka serves like that, I retract my comment that Garcia cannot lose as long as he holds her nerve.

I still expect Garcia to win the tournament, but Sabalenka can beat anyone if she duplicates her performance from today. If I hadn't lost in the Suicide pool with Azarenka over Pliskova, I would have boxed myself into a corner by picking Sabalenka today. Even if Pegula beats Swiatek, which I expect to happen but is not under her control, I don't give her much shot at beating this Sabalenka.

by Suliso We should however remember that Pliskova is a limited player. Great at serving, mediocre at returning and moving. Against a different player Sabalenka might not have fared as well.

by ponchi101 The only thing about Sabalenka now is that she plays are breakneck speed. There is nothing at 90%; not even 80% or 70%. Every ball is crushed at 100%. And in those days in which you are a bit off, that usually translates into disaster.
But if she plays like today, she will be tough to beat. Her serve was damn good today.

by nelslus The obvious problem here is: No one has any idea which Sabalenka will show up for the next match or two. She certainly had a monstrous serving day today- incredible second serves on big points.

by meganfernandez Would it kill people to just say she has played a great tournament, better than anyone expected, and leave it at that? Why does there have to be a negative? Y’ll are straining for negative things to say. This is what WTA players deal with - and women in general - that men don’t, for the most part.

by ponchi101 A separate member has chastised us for our negative commentary about Ruud.

I could be guilty myself there. I’ll start paying more attention to knee-jerk reactions.

But Ruud isn’t a defending semifinalist here and recent world #2 and a constant target of derision. Not quite apples and oranges.

by JTContinental Tiafoe takes the first set tiebreak 7-3. It could have easily been 7-0, but Rublev had three random lucky shots on mis-hits that clipped the back of the line

I genuinely hate feeling like I have to make comments, because I would never want to invalidate the crap that women and women's players have to take- which is an understatement, obviously.

However...on THIS site, the male players don't get snark? Don't get major criticisms? Novak? Zverev? The Entire Generation of Male Choker Tennis Players Who Wilted for Decades During The Big 3 (and, now and then, the Big 4 or 5) era? Check out my recent posts on Sinner, Schwartzman, etc., etc.....

It's not exactly straining to question whether or not Sabalenka can win this or any Slam, with her history- and BARELY making it out at this Open, only due to the choking of Kanepi. I mean, except for how loud she is on the court (which I cannot stand)- I can love watching Sabalenka's game- when she's playing well.

The last thing I want to do is come off as a sexist a-hole. But, this is how I feel here.

Ruud is a French Open finalist, now a US Open SEMFINALIST!!!!, his live ranking is #2, and he has gotten plenty of snark here. He just hasn't been a factor as long as Sabalenka.

by Suliso And in any case what kind of community would we be if we could only be positive on everyone all the time? A boring one I suspect. It would be different if all those players were participating here and reading us, but obviously they are not.

by ti-amie I think that critiquing a player's performance isn't necessarily sexist or picking on a player. I mean as nelslus mentioned there are several male players who are roundly criticized on this site. What can you say about players like Sabalenka or Sakkari that won't involve some negative talking points? Badosa? Even Iga has her weaknesses and it's not fair to only point out the good and not talk about when a player stinks up the joint.

Stefanos and Apostolos have their own sideshow going. Zverev isn't called by his Tennis Twitter nickname here but otherwise he gets dragged too.

I think that after this Open both tours are going to be fielding "top players" that in the recent past would've been middling at best. If you want to see real trolling there are other sites where that's a blood sport and flame wars are a main feature of the sites.

I think we're good here.

You're right, it's not straining. It's reflexive with Sabalenka. :) I don't think you guys are sexist. I know you're not an a-hole.

I didn't say men don't get snark. I said women get more knee-jerk criticism and cynicism, and Sabalenka is a prime example. I'm sure a few fellow female fans here would agree. I mean, it's not even a serious discussion. I won't reply to any other comments about this. It's too tiresome and I've spent too much of my energy in life on it. But I feel strongly about speaking out when I see it. Even if I'm not 100% right, I'm more right than wrong.

Only being positive about everyone all the time is not close to what I said, or the spirit of it.

by nelslus I mean, seriously, I can also cop to, I would never want numerous players (Justine?!??!) to read my commentary on them. It IS painfully clear about the despicable horrors that women players (and all women) take on social media. I'll always be triggered by what happened to Marino- who is a huge heroine for me. I would never be able to take the crap that she and too many women players have taken.

LOL, correct assumption!! (And, PLEASE don't let this happen due to my typo, universe!!)

by JTContinental Tiafoe is rolling through these tiebreaks, and does win the second set one 7-0

by nelslus Another tiebreaker win for Frances in the second set- this time with the JT-approved 7-0.

by Suliso What an amazing tournament for him. I certainly did not expect it.

Justine is free to read anything I've ever written about her. In fact, I'd be happy to perform it for her upon request.

by ponchi101 The incredible thing is how Tiafoe has kept the showmanship under control. He is celebrating, but keeping it clean and controlled.
Two sets and no breaks of serve. That is odd, at this level.

I mean, I think what is even more incredible is, Tiafoe has been choking away matches and big opportunities over and over again for months. Then- to come up with THIS level?!?! Just incredible. SO happy for Frances. :yahoo:

by ponchi101 Technically, his running FH is a beauty. He can go from defense to offense in one stroke. Best I have seen since Pete.

by ashkor87 Sabalenka is really like a tennis goddess, isn't she! She could walk onto the role of Wonderwoman..

by ashkor87 Meanwhile, Swiatek is looking more and more like a champion..Pegula seemed to fade there, towards the end of the first set

by ti-amie

by ashkor87 Soon as I said she is playing well .Swiatek committing errors she never would .pegula just doesn't have enough pace to push her back so she is getting away with it...will not be so next round ..

Suliso wrote: Wed Sep 07, 2022 5:38 pm As I said few days ago that Kanepi choke might have given a new life to Sabalenka.

Unless you are saying that it's the choking badly, but winning the match this time that was the positive motivation. THAT, I can understand.

^ Nor has Ruud choked away as many matches as Sabalenka, or beaten himself nearly as often as she has.
The criticism of Ruud here has been that he's 'weak', rather suggesting that he's not that good a player. But his results prove otherwise. He is only perceived as 'weak' because he is not 'spectacular', and he has not won a Major yet. But he's only been a top 10 player for less than 2 years, I believe.
Sabalenka, on the other hand, is not criticized for being a 'weak', or not very good, player, but rather for not winning the matches that she was well on her way to winning, and that she should have won.

I watched a bit of Ostapenko losing in mixed just now, with her gold tennis "skirt". So, do go there. (Although, in this case, I'd go with disturbing vs. funny). :gorgeous:

by JazzNU So my mom asks me a match or two ago, what's up with Iga's outfit? I said, uh, she's been wearing a version of it for months now. She say's it's bad look, like it's homemade. OMG. Please tell your mother. I mean, especially the Project Runway comment (Making the Cut also works for me). I love your mother. And my partner John wants your mother and you to know, he feels the same.

by ashkor87 Swiatek seems to lack feel on the ball ...has no confidence to Hit it ..Maybe they really are too light .

by JTContinental That first set sucked, but the quality of the tennis was much better in the second set. Both players were returning lights out. I still think Sabalenka will beat Swiatek, though.

ashkor87 wrote:Swiatek seems to lack feel on the ball ...has no confidence to Hit it ..Maybe they really are too light .
She is not-feeling the ball better than anyone I have seen. :) That was beautiful tennis in the last part of the 2nd set. Iga plays the big points better than anyone. She doesn’t need her A+ game to win the title. But Garcia could still beat her, maybe. I think Iga will beat Sabalenka. Her return might force Sab to miss a lot of serves.

by ponchi101 I say Sabalenka will take her. If Pegula can break her 6 times in a two setter, so can Aryna. And not be broken that much.

by JazzNU Truly feeling like we're gonna be here awhile even if one of them can win it in straight sets.

by ashkor87 Really don't like Alcaraz' serving action..doesn't take the racket back enough..results in a bit of snap..could lead to injuries over time, apart from not generating as much pace...

People have been afraid to come to the net for the past 25 years!

by JazzNU Video might not be available everywhere immediately. If it's not, it'll be available post-match fwiw.

by ponchi101 Two hours warm up. And now, best of three.
Time to prepare some tea. This will take time.

by Deuce I do this in pickleball and ping pong pretty frequently... but it's significantly more difficult to do in tennis.

by Suliso Sinner is doing a great job snatching tiebreaks. Two sets to one up now!

by Deuce It's as if both these guys were told before the match to "go out there and showcase what the next 10 years will be like".
Some amazing all-court play and shotmaking from both. All over the place, points are lasting 4 or 5 shots longer than they should...
Bravo to both players 👏🏻.

by ponchi101 The frigging Rumble in the Jungle. If this rivalry will bring this... :trophy:

by ponchi101 This is ridiculous.

by Deuce ...and we're going 5!
This thing will end around 3am :o .
Special night.

by JazzNU This is wild. But I'm not sure I can last til the end. Have the nerve to have an actual in-person meeting to attend late morning. Of all the days for that to happen.

That was right on. Four hours later, just into a fifth set.

I seem to have made a good choice for the first men's match to really watch this tournament.

by Suliso Crazy that I'm already at work and the late USO match still ongoing... Will have to catch some extended highlights.

by 3mlm And Alcaraz wins on his first match point with an ace!

by Deuce The match finished at 2:48am New York time.
5 hours, 15 minutes match time.
The quality of play in the 5th set was just as high - or higher - as it was in the 1st set.
One for the ages.

by jazzyg Holy God almighty.

That was an incredible match.

But you're only six hours ahead of NYC. I remember being at work and following the end of the Hewitt-Baghdatis match at the Australian 10-15 years ago. I was eight hours (less a day) ahead of Melbourne for that one. I think the sun was starting to come up as they were leaving the court.

Match of the year for sure. And I think men's tennis will be okay this decade without the bid three. Probably don't even need Zverev, Medvedev and Tsitsipas.

Let's not forget that the Aussie final also went 5, had a 0-2 sets comeback, also was very high quality and was historically more significant (Rafa breaking the tie with Roger and Nole).
And this is one match in which the UE count says nothing. Of course you were going to get a veery high UE count; after you have crushed the ball 24 times over the net for it just to come back, an UE is a very possible way that a point will end.
