whew.. that was close. conditions looked pretty fast, much faster than Stuttgart.. as usual, I would ignore this tournament when it comes to handicapping the FO. The Madrid winner seldom wins the French... conditions are too dfferent . on the WTA side, that is - the ATP has been dominated by Nadal on clay and he wins everything in sight, so the correlation is very strong.

Everything shall be considered in a proper context. Comparing to 11 Monte Carlo titles and 10 Rome titles, 4 Madrid titles are not the sign of domination.

Indeed. It shows that Madrid is different than the other clat court sites. And the winners' circle is also very different. Zverev has done well there, and although he has been good at RG too, the difference is obvious.

Swiatek is a favorite to win RG, but not because of her Madrid title.

It will be because of her Rome title. :D
Clay is where she is a heavy favorite.

It is widely publicized that Medvedev never been a repeat winner of ATP tournament. He won 20 in all the different venues. I just realized that Rublev follows the same scenario. His 16 tournament wins are also all different ))

Too enjoyable a match to end on a double fault (in a game that could have sent it to a tiebreak)

Sorribes Tormo is apparently the WTA leader in returning serve. That is so important in doubles... Great win over Krejcikova and Siegemund is perhaps not so surprising ..I don't know much about Bucsa...

How are we measuring return of serve? Sorribes Tormo doesn't seem to leading any of the statistics according to the WTA website, but I'm not sure how up to date this data is.

jazzyg wrote: Wed May 01, 2024 4:27 pm Rublev should go on and win this tournament. Even though he's not as as good as the truly elite players when they are in top form, he's always had more game than he is given credit for. As long as they don't declare the semis or final a grand slam quarterfinal, he should be in good shape.

Fritz could trouble him in the semifinal if they play because return of serve is his weakest shot, but I can't see Fritz beating him despite his head-to-head 5-3 lead (Rublev is 1-0 on clay, beating him a tight three setter on his way to the Monte Carlo title last year). Sinner is not 100-percent healthy and although Medvedev has owned him on hard courts, the matchup should favor Rublev on clay.

Even here, SST is one of the very few who won over 40% of first serve return points..
