by JTContinental Schwartzmann leaves the court after blowing 5 set points in the tiebreak, and the fans are treated to an extended shot of Tiafoe sitting shirtless on the sideline

by ponchi101 You are in tomorrow's topic... ;)

by JTContinental The SP has me a day ahead.

by Suliso Medvedev vs Kyrgios. I'll be surprised if neither reaches the final.

by ponchi101 I say it is the match that decides the top half. In the bottom, Rafa looks very solid, especially after tonight's training session goes to form.

by Suliso Probably Nadal, but in the bottom half there are a couple other serious candidates.

by ashkor87 As. Calvin said - the world can't end tomorrow, it is already tomorrow in Australia...
It is already tomorrow in SP!! And where I live...

The interesting matchups today are Med ,- kyrgios and to a lesser extent, jabeur kudermetova...good test of how good Kudermetova is.
Alcaraz and Azarenka very impressive in their wins, much easier than I expected..

I haven't, for sure. Why I haven't chosen him as a pick yet.

(Also, he COULD lose to Khachanov, who has a winning record against him).

by meganfernandez Crazy stat - Zhang Shuai was 0-14 in Grand Slams before she got her first win, over Halep at the 2016 Australian Open. And she made the quarters.

Zhang is the oldest player left in the draw at 33, and Coco is the youngest at 18.

Garcia continues to play at a high level.

AND Alison has been an absolute disaster today. Alison had a 3-0 record against Garcia. She hadn't even lost a set until today. Makes sense, though. Alison has been very lucky IMO to have made it this far. Caroline was well into double-digit errors in the first set. But, one horrendous service game from 4-5 in the first set- and that was that. Based on this match alone- one would have no idea how well Caroline is playing. But- obviously, she is on a huge hot streak,

by dryrunguy She struggled to close it out, but what a difference it makes to have a legitimate service motion--especially at critical junctures in big matches on big stages. Well done, Caroline.

And she may very well have more wins in her this week.

by Suliso Garcia served superbly and surely at least doubled Riske's winner count. Did become super nervous at 5-1, 40-15, though.

motobass and I were watching dubs with illuminating, match-pertinent commentary by Katrina Adams and switched over to this match - immediately noticed the difference.

by ponchi101 Last time I was in the USA, I was able to watch some tennis. Two people that were a joy to narrate the match: Adams and Chanda Rubin. They have mastered a simple yet critical nuance: when to remain silent. If nothing is happening, you don't have to say anything. The commentary was also insightful.
Not like my karma here, Clerc, who simply cannot go 5 seconds without opening his mouth. About any inane thing, not even related to tennis.

We love Chanda Rubin, one of our favorites! We have been enjoying Bethanie Mattek-Sands during this tournament, too.

by dryrunguy Chanda's great. But did you all read about how she got unfairly dragged the other night during Serena's match for incorrectly identifying Gladys Knight as Dionne Warwick? She was reading the teleprompter for the commentators rather than watching the actual video. She corrected it quickly, but the damage was done.

by ponchi101 Well, isn't that the current M.O? One truly innocent mistake (why would Chanda call one great performer by another's name) and anything you have done before gets erased. You turn instantaneously into mud.
It is so McCarthy (you read Marx in your youth. You are a commie and a danger to the country. End of life).

by ponchi101 Daniil looking very nervous out there. Asking the crowd to go crazy over every single silly shot.

I missed it when it happened. Only read about it later. But that's the type of thing that could have easily made our Tennis Journalism thread if someone wasn't paying attention or hadn't read the context.

For goodness sake. Can't people make mistakes anymore? Totally unfair, even is she hadn't been reading from a teleprompter. I can't wait for the age of outrage to end.

I just mistook Jagger Davenport for his mother when they showed him on TV. I really thought it was Lindsay with a short perm. It's remarkable how much they look alike.

The age of outrage only ends when the same people that put others to the stake, taste the flames themselves. By then, a lot of damage has been done.

Getting? He's almost irredeemable to me. He could have a civil conversation about the issue with her, but instead he goes straight to aggression and insults. By the way, he's griping about the serve clock. I don't know if he got a warning or if she just said something, but he thinks the clock shouldn't apply when he's sweating a lot and needs to go to his towel (like every single player).

He's also being a blabbermouth between Medvedev's first and second serves, total baby gamesmanship.

PCB is out. Surprise for me. But not a shock, I guess.

Kyrgios is already coming undone and it's only the first set, although he did pull it out finally. Pretty likely that he's going to get a point penalty if this match goes long. Early signs of another s---show.

by texasniteowl Behavior aside, sometimes I forget just how insanely talented Kyrgios is.

by ponchi101 I would have said that if Kyrgios had lost the set, I could have seen a tank. But now Medvedev is also complaining about the Kyrgios' side talking too much.
A shame, because the tennis has been better than average.

BTW. I also want to see one tournament director come up one day and back up their chair umpires. Approach them, and tell them "Whatever you do, I will back you up".

I'm guessing this is the message behind the scenes.

I don't think Med is out of line yet. He's setting his boundaries and letting the umpire know. Basically saying I'm not putting up with this s--- tonight.

Wow, Nick almost had a Djokovic Default moment. He smacked a ball at the backdrop and it was a couple feet from going over and hitting a spectator. P-Mac said it it had been a little higher, the match would be over.

by meganfernandez Nick went down pretty hard and stayed down for a while. He's okay... but Medvedev walked over to his side to check on him, and they slapped hands... it was a nice warm moment in this highly charged match.

Then... oh my gosh, Nick lost the next point in the most bizarre way. The ball hadn't bounced, so Nick wasn't allowed to cross the net to hit it. He thought he was. If he had let it bounce (out), he would have won the point. He was good-natured about it, though. He walked over to P-Mac, who was commentating from behind Nick's bench, to ask if it was legal, and P-Mac explained it wasn't.

by Deuce What looked to be a straightforward 1st set victory for Samsonova over Tomljanovic has now turned quite complicated, with Tomljanovic getting it to 4-5, and fighting off 7 set points in this 10th game, which has lasted about 13 minutes thus far, and is still ongoing...

yes, of course. Everyone has said this for years. Which has made it so tragic that he wasn't cut out to fulfill his potential. No judgment - many people aren't. He's not going to be a regular top player but he could win this tournament and a Wimbledon in the next couple years. Once he has proven himself, I think he will lose motivation. He doesn't love being a professional tennis player. Maybe that will change, like it did for Agassi.

by nelslus Of course, I've been far too entranced with the Tomljanovic/Samsonova thrill-fest. :gorgeous: (Ally "saved" 8 set points- i.e., Samsonova missed more or less 8 second serve returns). Ally now up 7-6, 4-0 (Samsonova may have something going on with her right knee....)

SO- what happened with that other match? Nick was great (albeit, obviously, also jerky)? Medvedev was terrible? Details, please.

We've all chatted about this before. But, to me, it's clear that Nick also has significant mental health issues. We'll also have to see if he can continue to get good help and take his mental health issues as seriously as possible. Again, having mental health issues doesn't mean you also have to be an a-hole. But, with all this celebrity, all these crowds....

by ponchi101 We spoke about that before. How do we reach a diagnosis that somebody has mental issues, simply by the fact of his behavior on court? He does not lack confidence on court, and his attitude there is "I am way better than you". On considerable occasions, he toys with his opponents.
Why can't we also accept the possibility that he is a bully? I mean, nobody ever said Mac had mental issues, or Rios. They were simply mean-spirited players, on court.

by Deuce McEnroe's psychological issues are pretty well documented, I think... the depression, the drug and alcohol abuse... in addition to his extreme behaviour on-court.
And I think any competent psychologist or sociologist will tell you that pretty much all bullies have 'mental issues'.

Of course, this discussion hinges on what one's definition of 'mental issues' is. Almost all bullies are very insecure. Is deep insecurity a 'mental issue'? To me, it certainly is.

by Deuce Tomljanovic won the 2nd set easily, by the way.
Samsonova just couldn't play at a decent level today, for whatever reason.

I mean, HE is now very open now about his mental health issues, drug/alcohol about and self-harm. It's all over the internet. I also would not at all be surprised if there is some history of abuse in there? And, COME on now- this is not just about making a diagnosis from his behaviors on court.

He doesn't lack confidence on court?? Of COURSE he lacks deep self-confidence. Someone who is healthily confident does not act like a bully. He is wildly over-compensating.

Trust me- having been brutally mercilessly bullied for years as a child, I am the last person who will excuse his bullying, and disrespect with others. I'm just suggesting that this is a part of the whole picture, and to hold on to a little compassion. (Also- note that I saw very little of this match, because I can't stand all of what happens during his matches.)

Let me also add that, if it turns out that he is abusive in his relationships with women, for example, re: this court case I've read about- then, he's another Zverev to me.

PS: AND, yes, indeed McEnroe has also been open previously about his mental health issues and alcohol/drug about history. (Rios' story I know very little about.) To repeat: This is never meant to excuse lousy behaviors and actions. It's also apparent that it might be time for everyone to truly take the time to learn more about mental health issues.

We don't reach a diagnosis. We don't even try go diagnose. We just discuss/wonder/ruminate/debate, hopefully remembering that we are mostly in the dark. On rare occasions, we can discuss/wonder/ruminate/debate with some valuable, informed insight. That applies to about 95% of fan conversations about sports.

People didn't talk openly about mental health when McEnroe and Rios were playing. That's one reason it probably didn't come up. Maybe not the only reason. The devil is in the details.

Personally, I don't love to make a spectator sport of analyzing someone's private matters, but discussing it can be appropriate when it's a big part of performance. In this case, I think it was appropriate even before Nick opened up about his struggle with depression.

I saw the first two sets, and Nick wasn't actually all that jerky except for some poutiness and his standard umpire abuse when the match was tight. I don't know if the stuff Ponchi is talking about from the fourth set was disrespectful or not.

by ponchi101 I did not say he was disrespectful. I said Nick was toying with Daniil, in the sense that some shot making was way over Daniil's level.

by nelslus I mean, Nick IMO is too often disrespectful to umpires, his opponents, etc. during matches. It sounded like he was disrespectful to the umpire today, at least? The viewers of this match of course know better than me on that. Anyway- Enough About Nick- at least for today.

Indeed. We will have three more matches to talk about him ;)

by meganfernandez Aww… Ons said she has been thinking of her late grandmother a lot this week for some reason, and asked for help in this tough match. Said her grandma always supported her a lot. Sweet.

I think both quarters in the bottom half will be close.

by jazzyg I will double down on my post from a few days ago that Medvedev is not as good as the consensus believes he is.

Ponch is right. Kyrgios could toy with him because he was so much better. Medvedev, in my opinion, is a very good but not a great player and a lot more fragile mentally than he is made out to be. For whatever reason, Djokovic was exhausted mentally by the time he reached the U.S. Open final last year and Medvedev just had to play good defense to beat him. I have a feeling Medvedev's loss to Nadal from a winning position in Australia will have a similar effect on him as Courrier's loss to Bruguera did in the '93 Roland Garros final. People wrote off that loss at the time, particularly when he then reached the Wimbledon final, but he was never a real factor again. Medvedev will be a factor, but I don't see him winning too many more slams in his career.

I had Kyrgios as the winner before the tournament (with no real confidence), and I like his chances better now. He is playing like the best player in the world.
