Nick went down pretty hard and stayed down for a while. He's okay... but Medvedev walked over to his side to check on him, and they slapped hands... it was a nice warm moment in this highly charged match.

Then... oh my gosh, Nick lost the next point in the most bizarre way. The ball hadn't bounced, so Nick wasn't allowed to cross the net to hit it. He thought he was. If he had let it bounce (out), he would have won the point. He was good-natured about it, though. He walked over to P-Mac, who was commentating from behind Nick's bench, to ask if it was legal, and P-Mac explained it wasn't.

What looked to be a straightforward 1st set victory for Samsonova over Tomljanovic has now turned quite complicated, with Tomljanovic getting it to 4-5, and fighting off 7 set points in this 10th game, which has lasted about 13 minutes thus far, and is still ongoing...

And so the set continues...
6-5 Samsonova now...

Kyrgios/Medvedev is over.
Nick is just toying with him.

So Nadal/Nick final? Blockbuster.

Between them, there were 10 set points saved/blown before Tomljanovic finally ‘won’ the tiebreak 10-8.
Neither player wanted to win this set, it seemed.
As the announcers said, the set was more lost than it was won. And that would have been the case no matter who ‘won’ it.

Don't count out Alcaraz.

But Nadal vs Kyrgios would be something else, though.

Any of the combinations are blockbusters. Rafa/Nick, or Nick/Carlitos will be huge.

I said it before. Nick's talent level is off the charts.

yes, of course. Everyone has said this for years. Which has made it so tragic that he wasn't cut out to fulfill his potential. No judgment - many people aren't. He's not going to be a regular top player but he could win this tournament and a Wimbledon in the next couple years. Once he has proven himself, I think he will lose motivation. He doesn't love being a professional tennis player. Maybe that will change, like it did for Agassi.

Of course, I've been far too entranced with the Tomljanovic/Samsonova thrill-fest. :gorgeous: (Ally "saved" 8 set points- i.e., Samsonova missed more or less 8 second serve returns). Ally now up 7-6, 4-0 (Samsonova may have something going on with her right knee....)

SO- what happened with that other match? Nick was great (albeit, obviously, also jerky)? Medvedev was terrible? Details, please.

Nick was patently better. To the point of toying with Daniil.
Talent levels: Obi-wan Kenobi sets up a duel with Luke. At age 5.

We've all chatted about this before. But, to me, it's clear that Nick also has significant mental health issues. We'll also have to see if he can continue to get good help and take his mental health issues as seriously as possible. Again, having mental health issues doesn't mean you also have to be an a-hole. But, with all this celebrity, all these crowds....

We spoke about that before. How do we reach a diagnosis that somebody has mental issues, simply by the fact of his behavior on court? He does not lack confidence on court, and his attitude there is "I am way better than you". On considerable occasions, he toys with his opponents.
Why can't we also accept the possibility that he is a bully? I mean, nobody ever said Mac had mental issues, or Rios. They were simply mean-spirited players, on court.
