Shnaider took the first set 6-3 from Sakkari. Sakkari took a 3-0 lead in the second set but Shnaider is trying to fight back.

I can safely say I have never heard of Ms Shnaider until tonight.

Russian player in the NCAA that came thru qualifying. Only became aware of her 2 days ago for SP.

by Deuce I always want Sasnovich to win - because she's the best on-court interviewee after the match. :)

by JazzNU Feel like the Aussie Open needs to send a team of people to study with the Wimbledon meteorologists. They are significantly better at estimating match resumptions than the AO is.

by ti-amie Shnaider, who came through Qualies, seems to have run out of gas. Sakkari up 5-2 in the third set.

by nelslus WELL done, Diana Shnaider. Truly- superb match.

She was upset and frustrated because she was having considerable difficulty with a player that virtually no-one had heard of.
In the on-court interview after the match, she was quite complimentary of Shnaider.

They showed the match. The strokes are there. Gorgeous serve, very, very, very good FH. She hit two smashes that reminded me of Mr. Pete.
Let's see the evolution.

She can hit the first serve very well. But, the serve- especially the second serve- will need a considerable amount of work. Her toss can get way too low, and at times wonky. (Just based on this match, of course.)

You ain't right!

by ponchi101 15 minutes game between Kvitova and Kalinina. And it was very high quality.

by Deuce I've seen good things from Kalinina in the past year or so. I think I posted at one time that she's a player to watch in the next couple of years.

With the excessive heat often being a factor at this time of year in Melbourne - and matches being delayed because of excessive heat -, this tournament can't afford many additional postponements due to rain.

by ponchi101 In the meantime, Alex Molcan has entered the Zone and has a Pent House with a view. He just can't miss. Felix has to wait for a few UE's to crawl into Molcan's game, who has hit 6 in one set a 5-2.
Petra out.

by nelslus I see that Petra's back in the Mugsy School of Wild Underachievement. Doesn't matter if she starts the year great (as she did this year), or poorly. Once she's in a Slam, she disintegrates.

Hey, Mugsy fans- at least Mugsy managed to whimper into a WTA Finals win during her most recent underwhelming years. Petra just gives crap. :gorgeous:

Felix has seriously just been pissing me off. He keeps playing this weird, thoughtless and ongoing generic game- not changing up much of anything. I did not see this 2023 crap level coming. (OF course, who knows what is going on with him otherwise?)

by nelslus Meanwhile, Nadal loses the first set to McDonald. Will have to see if it was a mistake for him to play this tournament. (And watch him now win the tournament.)

by ponchi101 Well, there are 127 players for whom playing this tournament was a mistake (and I don't mean because they will lose).
Serious here. Why would it have been a mistake for Rafa? He is not injured (more than usual).

Come on, now. It hasn't crossed your mind that Rafa might be injured- more than usual? And/or exhausted? I mean, he's been losing, especially for him, a lot of matches lately. It'd be a mistake to play this for Rafa if he puts himself in more physical distress. Don't know what he's been saying in interviews. But, it's not like tennis pros are going to be fully honest about their injury status while playing any tournament, much less a Slam.

Again, for all I know, Rafa'll win this thing- he's pulled off countless miracles. All of this I post out of full respect for Rafa.

by Deuce I've said for a few years now that Felix needs to be more like Denis, and Denis needs to be more like Felix.
By that, I mean that Felix plays a game that is too conservative - like he's using a book as a guide - he is too disciplined... and Shapovalov plays too wildly, with not enough discipline.
The two of them are close friends - and have been since childhood... which is interesting because they are total opposites in terms of personality - and that carries over to their playing style.

Felix needs to trust himself more and not rely nearly as much on trying to play tennis the 'proper' way. There is no proper way to play tennis!! Trust your instincts! But I feel that Felix is focussing too much on 'being disciplined', and is not in touch with his instincts at all...

(And Denis relies too much on his instincts, which is to be flashy and 'spectacular' on the court. It looks nice, but it inherently leads to errors and inconsistency. And so he needs to be more disciplined, and go for intelligent shots more often instead of always going for the spectacular shots.)

by texasniteowl I think it's funny how the McEnroe bros are acting so surprised that Nadal is down a set and a break and not dominating. Nadal's previous match against Draper wasn't exactly a stellar performance and just now Nadal is limping for sure.

by JTContinental Rafa looks like he did something to his hip

I posted about it (you have not been around). But it was about his serve; he has not recovered from that ab injury in Wimby, to the point in which he can extend properly. So, sure, he has been losing a lot lately (meaning since the USO) but I would not say to the point of skipping a slam.

Anyway. As you say, he has pulled enough miracles. But this looks pretty much over. Let's see what he can do.

I'm very happy that Felix took the time on a changeover to read my post above.
Always happy to help out a fellow Canadian!
:)

by Deuce I think the chair umpire in the Felix - Molcan match got stuck in his ‘automatic elevator chair’...
I heard him say to the ball kids “Watch your head - I’m coming down”... then it looked like he was trying to press the button - or joystick or whatever - to lower the chair, but it wasn’t working. He then called some officials to help him, and, after a few minutes, they eventually got the chair to go down.

Those automatic elevator chairs are just an obnoxious way for people to show off that they can make such a contraption. There is obviously absolutely no valid reason for it - it’s certainly not needed or necessary - I think every umpire is physically capable of climbing up and down the 5 or 6 steps, as they have done for many decades.
Further, Andy Murray complained during his win over Berrettini that the foot rest of those automatic chairs extends out too far after he almost smacked his head on it while running down a shot.

by Suliso Out goes Nadal in straight sets. His last AO perhaps?

by ponchi101
Suliso wrote: Wed Jan 18, 2023 6:31 am Out goes Nadal in straight sets. His last AO perhaps?
More than 50% chance of that.
My idiot opinion, of course.

by Deuce I hope Nadal takes all the time and rest he needs to be ready for one final Roland Garros...

Seeing his wife crying when he took the injury time out tells you all you need to know about how much tennis means to Rafa.

by Deuce Andreescu once again creating drama where there should be none...
Won the 1st set easily 6-2 over little known qualifier Cristina Bucsa.

Then she somehow gets behind 1-5 in the 2nd set amid a few brief rain delays...

... Only to come back and tie the set at 6-6...

... Only to then lose the 2nd set tiebreak...

... Then she leaves the court before the 3rd set...

Sigh...

by ashkor87 Watching Gauff..I see no sign of that cramped forehand..she is making room and whacking it! Good improvement!

by Deuce On a night where Spain lost their brightest star, qualifier Cristina Bucsa - a Spaniard born in Moldova - salvages the third day for her country in beating Andreescu...

Andreescu dominated the 1st set, and it looked like it was going to be a quick and easy match for her. She somehow got behind 1-5 in the 2nd, but came back and had a match point in the 2nd set tiebreak. But she ultimately lost the tiebreak, sending the match to a 3rd set...

The 3rd set was close - but Bucsa got an early break and held it (and held her composure) through the end of the set - 6-4. Full credit to her.

Meanwhile, Gauff took the 1st set off of Raducanu 6-3, and they are even at 4-4 with a break each in the 2nd.

by ashkor87 Now it is back. Maybe the pressure..

by Deuce Gauff won the 2nd set tiebreak, and thus the match.
It was a good match played by both. Raducanu did better than most people expected of her (myself included). Although this will go down as an early round loss, let's hope that the fact that she played well against a top 10 player will help to get her back on the right track.

I kind of wanted to pick Gauff to win this tournament... but I can't do that. I just don't think she's quite ready yet to win a Major - in terms of maturity and experience. But it will come.

by JTContinental Is Kasatkina injured? She got blasted in her warm up tournament final and now just lost the first set to Gracheva 1-6

by Deuce Kasatkina looked ill to me in the Adelaide Final vs. Bencic.
She wasn't running balls down as she usually does (even in practice), and she appeared rather lethargic.
I haven't heard or read any official account that she has been ill, though - so her performance tonight might be due to the unflattering top that adidas no doubt made her wear...
(She just lost 1 and 1.)

I like Kasatkina. I think she's one of the purest ball strikers on the tour. But she is quite fragile mentally. I hope she can eventually overcome that.

by Deuce In the battle of the double surnames, Parrizaz Diaz just won the 1st set tiebreak over Haddad Maia 13-11.
The set took 1 hour, 21 minutes, and both players won 54 points.

And Sloane Stephens continues her inconsistent 'feast or famine' results with a straight set loss to Anastasia Potapova. Close sets - a tiebreak and 4-6 - but still a 1st round loss.

I'm watching Collins - Muchova now - just beginning. In theory, at least, this should be a good one.

by Deuce An intriguing 1st set between Collins and Muchova...
Muchova got ahead 5-2 while playing the beautiful all-court tennis that she was known for before her injuries. But then she all but completely disappeared for the next 4 games, allowing Collins to grab the momentum and go up 6-5. Muchova recovered just in time to send it to a tiebreak, which she then dominated 7-1.

Meanwhile, Parrizas Diaz beat Haddad Maia in straight sets...

Rybakina and Kostyuk both won easily...

Tsitsipas took care of Rinky quickly in straight sets...

Shapovalov won the first 2 sets over Daniel - the 2nd in a tiebreak -, and they're on serve halfway through the 3rd.

by Deuce Collins - Muchova was indeed a good, very close match. Collins won 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.
This was the best I’ve seen Muchova play since she’s come back from her injuries. There were just too many lulls in her play, though.
Still, she should feel good about playing so well. She’s on the right path.

Full credit to Collins - she gutted it out and was the better player in the end.

When Collins won her 7th point in the 3rd set tiebreak to make it 7-3, she dropped her racquet and threw up her arms in celebration that she won...
The only problem was that final set tiebreaks are 10 points, not 7. Collins was quite confused, and went to the umpire for an explanation.
Muchova knew it was a 10 point tiebreak, and was ready to play the next point. Collins lost 3 of the next 4 points... but eventually did win it 10-6. After the match, she said it was quite embarrassing when she thought she had won it at 7 points.
She gets Rybakina next. That should be a good one, as well.
