2024 Around the World: How it works

#1

Post by dave g »

I am going to wait until after the post-Aussie Open rankings come out, before I start this contest. The first tournaments will start on February 5th.

Around the World will be open to all TAT members. This year, Around the World will be a WTA contest.

It will encompass 4 weeks with 6 indoor and outdoor hard-court tournaments: Cluj Napoca, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, San Diego and Austin.

Your team will consist of 12 WTA players from the top 100 women (as of the rankings dated January 29, 2024) on the WTA Tour. You will have 150 credits to spend on your 12-woman team. Your initial team may not be the same as a team that has already been posted, or it will be disqualified. We'll do our best to help monitor this. However, the responsibility of adhering to the requirements of this rule falls solely in the hands of the contest participant.

The top 100 WTA players are divided into 4 categories. Each player will be priced according to her ranking. You'll purchase 3 players from each category.

Like other TAT Fantasy Tournaments, each player on your team will be awarded points depending on how deep she goes in each tournament.

Substitutions:
You are allowed up to 4 trades during the 6 tournament contest. Trades can be made at any time and for any reason, but a trade will not go into effect until the following tournament. To make a trade, sell a player back (adding her price to your remaining credits) then simply buy another player. When making a trade, please post in the Trade Thread, found here. YOU MUST ALWAYS HAVE 3 PLAYERS PER CATEGORY ON YOUR TEAM AND YOU CAN NEVER HAVE SPENT MORE THAN 150 CREDITS. If your trade violates these rules, your trade is cancelled and you lose your trade; that is, if it was your first trade, you will then have only 3 trades remaining.

Tournaments:
Cluj Napoca, February 5
Abu Dhabi, February 5
Doha, February 11
Dubai, February 18
San Diego, February 26
Austin, February 26

Categories and Player Pricing:
CATEGORY A: Players 1-15. Price 16-30 credits each.
CATEGORY B: Players 16-40. Price 9-15 credits each.
CATEGORY C: Players 41-70. Price 6-8 credits each.
CATEGORY D: Players 71-100. Price 5 credits each.

It is your responsibility to "scout" the players on your team and ensure that they're playing in each specific tournament. The team you have at the start of each tournament is the team you're playing.

Your team must be posted by the start of play at the earliest time in Cluj Napoca or Abu Dhabi, which begin Monday, February 5, 2024. No late entrants will be accepted.

What Do You Do Now?
Select your team before the start of play Monday, February 5 ( local time)! You can find the list of players and prices in the Players and Prices thread.

If you still have any questions after reading the contest rules, please feel free to ask them in this thread! We'll answer them as quickly as possible.

We are allowing one "Wild Card" that is ranked over 100 per team, if you wish. Consider any Wild Card to be a Category D player.

Cluj Napoca is in the GMT+2 time zone, while Linz is in the GMT+1tme zone. So Cluj Napoca will probably start before Linz, but their time zones are close enough that the actual starting times may be reversed.

If we assume a 10:00 a.m. starting time at Cluj Napoca, the initial team deadline will be 8:00 a.m. GMT, 3:00 a.m. US eastern time, and midnight US pacific time. This is probably the earliest possible deadline, and there is a fairly good chance that the actuall deadline is later.

Oops. Somehow, I forgot the second tournament was Abu Dhabi, which is GMT+4, as opposed to being LInz which is currently being played.

If we assume a 10:00 a.m. starting time at Abu Dhabi, the initial team deadline will be 6:00 a.m. GMT, 1:00 a.m. US eastern time, and 10:00 p.m. Sunday US pacific time. This is probably the earliest possible deadline, and there is a slight chance that the actuall deadline is later.

I will join one of these sometime this year :) We got pummeled by snow (biggest storm in 21 years) and I spent over half my waking hours shovelling somewheres. Definitely didn't have energy to look at spreadsheets this weekend :)

For Doha and Dubai (64 player draws)
First round : 7
Second round : 15
Quarterfinal : 25
Semifinal : 45
Final : 70
Winner : 100

For Culj Napoca, Abu Dhabi, San Diego, and Austin (32 player draws)
First round: 15
Second round: 25
Semifinal: 45
Final: 70
Winner: 100

What happened to the quarterfinals in 32 player draws unless a first round loser gets 0 points?

Sorry about that mess. The "Start-up Threads" are from 2020, during COVID, which resulting in all of the tournaments being small 32 draw tournaments.
I have since fixed those "start-up threads"

Here are the correct scoring:

32 Player Draw Tournaments:
First round : 7
Second round : 15
Quarterfinal : 25
Semifinal : 45
Final : 70
Winner : 100

64 Player Draw Tournaments:
First Round : 3
Second round : 7
Third round : 15
Quarterfinal : 25
Semifinal : 45
Final : 70
Winner : 100

Doha starts Sunday and is in GMT+3. So, if we assume that the first match starts at 10:00 a.m. local time, the trade deadline will be 7:00 a.m. GMT, 2:00 a.m. US eastern time and 11:00 p.m. Saturday US pacific time.

I keep forgetting that WTA trounaments run Sunday to Saturday, and not Monday to Sunday. So, Dubai starts tomorrow. Dubai is in GMT+4 time zone. So, if the first match starts at 10:00 a.m. local time, the tentative deadline will be 6:00 a.m. GMT, 1:00 a.m. US eastern time, and 10:00 p.m. tonight US pacific time.
