A longstanding rule doesn’t make it a good rule. Vondrousova withdrew “hours before” her match, meaning play likely started for the day and it would have been too late to make a new pick. Getting the LL makes sense. But, not my pool, not my rules, I’m out, fair and square, just seems no harm no foul to get the LL instead of an arbitrary elimination from a for fun suicide pool. If it was the 3rd round or something and your player withdrew then tough luck, but that isn’t the case here. Oh well.
I do sympathize as it sucks to go out that way, but it's a good rule, and there are reasons that it is in place.
1)It creates an administrative nightmare on the back end for volunteers who are doing this in their spare time. For example, sure Vondrousova withdrew hours before the tournament, but it was late night/early morning on a weekend in my time zone, and I'm not sitting a my computer all day constantly checking the draw looking for withdrawals, nor should I have to. The 15 players eliminated also did not do this.
2)You didn't pick the LL, so it creates an environment that is unfair to the other players who made a pick.
After subtracting a whopping 9 no picks and one interloper that keeps picking despite not having made a pick on day 1, we are down to 71 players for Day 4.
I predicted before the tournament that Tauson was going to take out a good chunk of the field, so let's see if I am right.
The breakdown:
Clara Tauson 18 Belinda Bencic 17 Donna Vekic 11 Leylah Fernandez 9 Liudmila Samsonova 7 Paula Badosa 4 Mirra Andreeva 2 Magdalena Frech 1 Marta Kostyuk 1 Diana Shnaider 1
