The recent all-Polish WTA final made me conduct a small investigation on those.
3528 - overall finals through Open Era.
759 - same country finalists.
25 countries that have more than zero occurrences (I have a Database populated through 1st week after French Open 2024).
These things are statistically much more common than one would expect - 759 finals out of 3528 = 21.5%
But if you exclude 60s-70s - there will be 360 out of 2443 = 14.7%
And if you exclude 80s as well - there will be 188 out of 1896 = 9.9%
With tennis spreading its geography same country finals are getting less and less frequent.
But the top 10 countries in this category are very obvious, if you really think about it )) The same goes about top 5. Remember - this is a question about WTA only and about the whole duration of Open Era.
What are the top 10 countries with the most finals (meaning the champion and the runner-up are from the same country)?
What are the top 5 among those?
