Several quite random results today
Kostyuk might still be tired from last week, and remember, the elevation at Madrid probably means this surface isn't like any other.
Madrid's altitude is shown as 650 m (average). Highest is 840. While Gstaad for instance is at 1080. Guadalajara is 1566. So while it is noticeable, it is far from unique.
Guadalajara has had its share of strange results too . Pegula won her first, and for a while only, 1000 level title there, now Sakkari's only 1000 level title.

Rune was still a 2:1 favorite at the start of the third set against Griekspoor.

Now he's down a break. Being mildly petulant.

He had something I hadn't seen before. He went to slam his racquet, and stopped. Went to back of court and yelled in direction of his box, gesticulating wildly, and then slammed it meekly.

Can't stand people who slam their rackets ..how can you be so disrespectful of the tools of your trade?
Meanwhile Andreeva continues to roll .great win over Vondrousova..just seems to fly across the clay.

I might start posting the OoP's from the tournament site. There are less hoops to jump through.

She's forgotten how to lose - can she keep this going through to a good run at Roland Garros?

Paolini's win here makes me think the court is playing fast ..not like a conventional clay court.

Tommy Paul, Leylah, TT all lost...maybe because volleyers don't do well here unless they have big serves ...testing the hypothesis

The WTA website is being odd with the dates for the schedule of play. It's got the wrong date on the OOP for tomorrow.

Of those 3 players only Leylah Fernandez has ever had a significant result at a significant clay court tournament. If they'd made a run at this event it would have been unusual.

You think of Tommy as a volleyer? I think of him as a classic base liner. Maybe even a bit of a counterpuncher.

Comfortable coming in does not make a volley in the classic sense
