I was never into One Direction but how could you not know about them? To say I'm shocked is putting it mildly.

May he Rest in Peace.

If you are shocked about not knowing about them...

I was not the target audience for them, so have limited knowledge, but they were quite pervasive here in the US. In one of the articles I read about Payne's death, it was mentioned that they are the only band in history to have their first four albums debut at #1 on the Billboard charts, so they left their mark.

Teri Garr has died.
She was such a lovely actress. Had a huge crush on her after "Young Frankenstein".

Reliably selected the wrong players? The very article you are linking says he won it twice, having Cash in the team.
Who else from Australia was there to select in the 80's?

He brought a team to India in the late sixties /seventies and lost horribly, for one thing, because he chose the wrong players ..I saw them play..this was much before Cash et al..I remember seeing John Alexander, for one, as part of his team

He chose Crealey and Ruffles, who lost miserably..then Alexander and Stone went on a tour of India and beat everyone..I saw them in Pune as a young schoolkid..around 1971 I think

Be that as it may, he was a champion and a great builder of teams...

Zakir Hussein, the great percussion maestro, passed away today in San Francisco at the age of 73.. he was simply the greatest percussionist (tabla) of this generation.. he was very fit and healthy, no bad habits like drinking or smoking, everyone thought he would be around much longer..

just a sample..

this is not the ocassion to say this, but many Indians, especially Hindus, dont realize and appreciate the tremendous contribution of Muslims to Indian music. the much villified Amir Khushru, for instance, brought us the sitar and numerous raagas, including the 'Emperor of Ragas' Yaman..

Rickey played. Rickey was good.
Personally, one of the most exciting players ever. Could hit, could run, could catch, could do it all.
May Rickey rest in peace indeed. Too young to pass away.
