Mertens holds- Coco shakily holds....and then Mertens went back to absolute crap play, with solid play from Coco. 0 & 2.

0 and 2 the day she turns 2-0.

I'm shocked Emma beat her. Emma doesn't have a big weapon. Just is very good athletically and evidently played well strategically.

Askhor, did you think this surface should favor Sabalenka overall?

yes, I did think so.. maybe it is just proof that a slow court is a great leveler- anyone can beat anyone if she stays patient and doesnt make UFEs..

saw a bit of the highlights (all I can see here).. Sabalenka clearly got frustrated because Navarro was getting a lot of balls back, able to handle Saba's power. We know Sabalenka is not the most patient player in the world, so...

There were some comments a few years ago about Navarro being on tour solely because her dad is a millionaire that owns the Charleston tournament.
Then I just went to the WTA site and found our she is ranked #23. So it is not just daddy's money.
And BTW, she looks very pretty. Some marketing potential there.

She was definitely a nepo baby to start off, but she made the transition to legit player last year.

Daddy's money only gets you so far, and not as far as the top 20. Probably not event top 100. It might even be a hindrance at some point, if you don't care about the money. Very impressive, what she has done the last couple of years. She is tied with Iga for # of match wins ins 2024.

Not just 2024. She's third in match wins since the start of 2023 (including ITF's, not just WTA tournaments).

If she won a tournament, she's doing well to go on a tear in terms of physicality. Timofeeva mentioned that she hit a wall physically (and emotionally) when she got to the 4th round of the Aussie after qualifying. It will be interesting to see if Yuan has much energy vs vs Gauff.

She's already 25 years old (born September 1998), she finished 2021 at 312 (had peaked at 198--from her playing history, she may have had some injuries that year--there were a couple of stretches when she didn't play for two or four months). While she finished 2022 at 74 (had a good fall run: qualified and made the third round at US Open (lost to Pegula, then made three ITF finals (winning one) in the US)), she fell back outside the top 100 until last August.

Then she got hot again in the fall, this time in Asia. She got to the final of the WTA 500 in Korea (losing to Pegula again), then to the finals of three ITF $100,000, winning one of those. This year, she qualified and reached the semis in Auckland (WTA 250), losing to Navarro. She lost in the first round of her next two tournaments (Boulter at Australian Open) and lost in qualifying in another, then rebounded to win the Austin 250, and now four wins in Indian Wells.

Thanks for looking all that up and typing it out! I'd guess this is probably a pretty normal (to above average) career fluctuation. All the players have the ability to go on a run like this for a little bit. But a lot of things have to line up, and the player has to be dedicated, believe, and work very, very hard. Maybe get lucky.

The surface is great for Alcaraz, if he's in top shape. As you said, though, Zverev matches up well against him. Won in Australia. We'd all rather see Sinner-Alcaraz, though.
