This 'go for broke,' is probably coco's innate style, encouraged by Gilbert. He said in one of the TV shows online that he thinks it is better to have a high percentage of points won on serve than to have high percentage of serves in...I assume he knows whereof he speaks

As of now., only QZ and Rybakina have a higher win rate than Coco on first serve, according to the wta website.

Re: The Tennis Coaching Merry Go Round
Nobody is saying that her first serve has any issues. That stroke is fine.
But the problem with DF's is that they cascade inside your head. You hit one and you feel you gave the point away (which is odd, because that does not feel the same for an UE on, for example, a groundstroke). Then, you lose confidence on your serve, putting more pressure on your first serve. In the meantime, you opponent is gaining confidence: "Hey, she missed her first serve, I have a VERY good chance to win the second serve without even hitting the ball". So, they tee off on that second serve and if they make as few as one return for a winner, you (the server) feel more pressure on your second serve because you can't get it in consistently and, when you do, it gets creamed.
And one small part of your game that was not working brings down the entire edifice.
She needs to go out there and play a full match just hitting second serves, even for her first. Then she can start working up the mechanics again.

Re: The Tennis Coaching Merry Go Round
It is her contact point; the ball is dipping already when she hits it. She actually did try taking something off the serve in the 17 DF match--when she was going full speed, it would go long, and if she took something off, it would go into the net.
Brad Gilbert is good at getting immediate results, but I think he gets very annoying and people stop listening to him when subjected to his personality day in and day out. Coco got what she needed from him and should likely move on.

His "advice" yesterday, what was caught in the mic, was ridiculous.
"C'mon, Coco, you are a champion!".
I think she knows that.

Gilbert is a motor mouth isn't he! Even Agassi found him annoying ..he seems to be more of a strategy coach than a technical coach...she needs one of those, not a morale booster...

Mid-match most players can't make technical adjustments - she was within a set of winning the match.

Indeed. That is the case.skatingfan wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 3:20 am Mid-match most players can't make technical adjustments - she was within a set of winning the match.
But an adjustment like "take off a bit from the first serve, so you can get them all in for the next two games" is not an unreasonable adjustment, and something that can be said.
Or:
"Just extend the rallies. Keep it in for one game, without going for a winner".
As long as the other team does not hear you, that can also be done.

Scoop: In a shock move, Osaka trades Fissette for Mouratoglou
2024September13Scoop: In a shock move, Osaka trades Fissette for Mouratoglou
Stephanie Myles
Open Court learned just before the start of the US Open that Naomi Osaka was negotiating to make a change in her coaching setup.
Denials all around.
But in the last few weeks, we were told that discussions had intensified and now we can confirm that Osaka, who had been working with renowned coach Wim Fissette since her return to training last summer and her return to the match court in January, has ended things with him.
But the blockbuster news is the identity of the new coach.
It is … Patrick Mouratoglou, former coach of Serena Williams and, most recently, of Holger Rune.
We reached out to all parties involved on this issue over the last few weeks. But the only reply came from Mouratoglou, who said before the US Open that he had indeed discussed becoming Osaka’s coach last summer, when she was auditioning coaches to began training for her comeback. (We’re told that Brad Gilbert was another, before he began working with Coco Gauff).
But since the Frenchman was working with Rune at the time, the discussions ended there. And so, he struck down the rumour.
So we held onto the news until we could at least confirm or deny it credibly.
At the UCLA tennis courts in the Los Angeles suburbs today, Osaka, Mouratoglou and the rest of her squad were spotted by our boots on the ground, at practice.

What do you guys think? Who will Fissette end up coaching? I saw this on another site and was surprised that the list was this long.
Just me but I think he'll avoid both Raducanu and Rybakina. He might go with Navarro.
Rybakina
Raducanu
Andreescu
Anisimova
Navarro
Gauff
Sakkari
Kenin
Parks
Errani

I don't know why Navarro would want him. She is doing fine.
And... I would like to see Moratoglous' passport. Because I really want to know when he went to India, and how long he spent there, learning how to charm snakes.
Does anybody even checks his resume before hiring him? Sure, he coaches Serena. And Rune. And Halep. And Coco.
Total number of slams under his tutelage: zero.
I can coach better than the guy. And I mean it.

I think you've forgotten how long Mouratoglou was with Serena. She won her last 10 majors with him as coach.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2024 4:40 am That part cracked me up.

I'll take your word for it, but my recollection is that he arrived as head coach for her after her return.skatingfan wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2024 12:01 pmI think you've forgotten how long Mouratoglou was with Serena. But, if you say so, I accept that.
But that means she was already a 13 time Slam champion. Not that Mouratoglou made that much of an improvement.
