I think people experience homophobia, racism, otherism, or misogyny in myriad ways. For instance, if you called me a f@*got, that's a call to arms, for me. Expect something back from me, be it verbal or physical, you're not getting away with calling me that. My husband on the other hand would just walk away. For some reason I am much more sensitive to that word than he is, so we therefore react differently. Some people hear racism very loudly, some don't.
