Rough draw for Garbine. You have to assume she took a wild card here to get some matches under her belt since she so rarely plays at the 250 level in her career, and she draws one of the hottest teens on tour? That's unfortunate.

True and she lost in straight sets... #3 seed Cornet is out as well.

Re: WTA 250 Hua Hin, Lyon 1/30-2/5/2023
Garbie has faded, and it seems she is unable to get any traction. By now, it can't be injuries; she has been off the tour long enough to recover. but she may be in one of those vicious circles: she doesn't win, so she gets very little (if any) competitive time on court, so she goes into the next tournament with no matches under her belt, so she loses and... repeat.
She has to start playing 250's. See if she can get some wins, and that winning feeling. Let's remember Agassi did it, ages ago. Went all the way down to Challengers (played two, and lost both finals). But that got him back on track by playing several matches in a row.

I understand your larger point, but I don't see how Agassi is ever a good comp in these situations.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 4:20 pm Garbie has faded, and it seems she is unable to get any traction. I saw some of the Garbiñe vs Noskova match. At one point Conchita was shaking her head "no no no". I have no idea what is wrong with her.

Re: WTA 250 Hua Hin, Lyon 1/30-2/5/2023
I missed her doing that. Garbine played well for that one good stretch in the 2nd half, enough so that she should've been able to force a third set. But she really didn't have it today.
And not helping that Noskova had a unexpectedly brief Aussie Open that she's got to be looking to erase. She played great.

Only that he went down to the Challengers to get some rhythm. Other than that, indeed different.
I don't know about you but, for me, even when I was young it always took me a good couple of weeks of training to get my timing. Sampras was famous for getting his touch back very quickly. I don't know if Garbie could use 3, 4 matches in a row to get some of that back. But losing in 1R at the Aussie and now here is not going to give her rhythm.

Re: WTA 250 Hua Hin, Lyon 1/30-2/5/2023
I know many need matches to regain their timing. Personally, my timing would come back quickly, but I was never not playing a sport at that time, which might have helped. If it wasn't tennis, it was another sport in between those breaks for the most part.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 8:47 pm

It's nice to see Garbine give this tournament a go, but a shame it likely didn't achieve what she needed. If she's playing in Doha and Dubai, hard to not see early exits there, but hopefully I'm wrong.

It's all about confidence (or lack thereof).
I think that's the 'vicious circle' - you need confidence to win... but if you don't win, you don't get confidence...
It just snowballs.
