Isn't there also something to be said about how quickly the Black cops were fired and charged in comparison to their white predecessors who committed similar crimes?
There are a lot of layers to this. And I hope not one of those layers gets lost.
Yes, and Elie points that out in his last post. It's very quick and it rarely is. You could say, the video is that bad, but you could've said that about at least 5 videos in the last 5 years absolutely warranting an immediate firing, and it doesn't happen. Part of that is the awful police unions though, which is why Elie pointed to that as well. That they haven't been out for the black officers when, no matter how bad a look it is, they always are, should speak volumes to everyone.
A lot of layers. Just about all of them have been pointed out numerous times in the past, but like almost everything related to policing, no one believed us until there were videos they could see themselves. And even then, it took videos being shown repeatedly in separate incidents for many to accept maybe this was more of an issue than they thought.
Some of the layers will get lost, that's just the reality. But some progress is better than none, and hopefully more than just Memphis takes a look at their policies, their training, and how their specialized units are operating and whether they are causing more harm than good. One of NYC's special units was responsible for killing Amadou Diallo, but they weren't convicted (which remains complete and utter BS), and they didn't disband the unit until the Feds basically forced them into it a few years later. Scandal seems to be the thing that ends these units, not an internal review.
