In OTHER news- and, granted, apparently Bondar had some kind of injury, having taken the Tour Mandatory Medical Time-Out in the middle of the second set (foot? ankle? I wasn't paying attention, until they went back to play)....it is always so lovely for me when Taylor plays this well. Smart, fluid tennis. Love her game at its best.

Intense - yes. But to a degree that you can damage your own rib - sounds like a stretch. Maybe she is taking too much from the book of her idol - Rafa Nadal. Who was - oh, so hurt in his loss to Soderling - that in order to demonstrate how hurt he was - skipped Wimbledon. And then of course he was still hurt when DelPo cleaned his clock in US Open.
Let me see if I get this straight. Rafa lost to Soderling at RG, the tournament he loves the most, and claimed a fake injury, and then, so nobody would doubt the reality of his injury he skipped Wimbledon, where he was the defending champion, so he would not be called on that lie?
I mean, how evil can a person be?
Apart from physical injuries, there are also shattered egos. His ego was unquestionably injured in this loss. Especially if factor in that Soderling was the last person he would want to lose, considering their history (I mean the animosity during/after Wimbledon 2007 encounter).

Leylah lost the first 3 games of the match badly vs. Tsurenko, and was down 1-4 (2 breaks). She couldn't hit the court.
After that, she couldn't miss, and won the set 6-4.
I assume she was just trying too hard at first, as it's her 'home' tournament (she lives in the area), and then she settled down.
2-1 Tsurenko in the 2nd now, with a break.
The chair umpire (Julie Kjendlie) has just adjusted Tsurenko's bra strap (mid-game) - so I expect Tsurenko to go on a winning roll now :). (I wonder what would have happened if the chair umpire were a man...)

Emma was very obviously very tired in the 3rd set vs. Andreescu - she wasn't running for half the balls, and she asked for a replay of close calls about 6 or 7 times, just to buy some time to rest.

Anisimova is going nowhere fast. She seems lost.

Muchova certainly doesn't seem tired - she's been breezing through her matches here in one-sided sets.

The difference between playing indoors and outdoors can be huge, of course - I would think that's quite obvious. The entire atmosphere - including the sound - is very different.
The biggest difference, though, are the elements - namely the sun, wind, temperature, and humidity.

Yet another in-match retirement - Monfils quit at 3-3 in the 1st set vs. countryman Humbert.
I don't know the reason.

Shelby Rogers took the 1st set 6-4 from Stephens.
Stephens is up 3-0 in the 2nd...

Monfils hit one FH and immediately winced in pain. It seems to be a wrist injury.
He tried to play on, but to no avail.

I never thoight indoor versus outdoor be that different! are there any precedents we know of? of someone being very good indoors but not outdoors? Kvitova and Safarova come to mind, but then Safarova did get to the finals of the French..and Kvitova has a known allergy issue..
Agree. But the pattern for Parks is clear. Andorra, Angers and Lyon: w, w, w (all 125's or 250's). Everything else is 1R or 2R.
So I gather she can tell us that indeed, very different.
In such circumstances I always feel the player will figure it out sooner or later, if she gets the support she needs..

I see Robin Montgomery has won through to the second round ..how is she? Much potential? I only saw highlights of her match against Coco last year, could hardly get a return in on her backhand. .

saw highlights of Leylah.. she is really the most fun player to watch - the variety, the movement, the volley, the drop shots.. and yes, the court does seem faster than IW, to my eyes at least, or maybe just that Leylah makes it seem so!

Clearly on Bencic's side here. But that may be a very tough match.
