BTW.
Everybody knows how I feel about favoritisms and such; I do not like them.
But Ons is scheduled to play around mid day, and it is Ramadan. If she is a strict follower, she can't eat or drink during the day. I say, in this case, do not make an exception, but schedule her for at least a couple of night matches. Let her at least hydrate during the match (and get a snack before).

Fair enough..all I can say is I see nothing very special in Pegula',s game..she is a solid professional..to me, Alexandrova has something more. I am not much impressed by rankings, anyway. I am only contrasting her with Pegula because they are both close to 30, and because everyone here is so high on Pegula, for no reason I can see. I do get the point about injuries but all players are going through that these days.

I really can't recall a single person here being high on Pegula. I am with Nelslus: sure, she seems like a decent and likeable person, but her game bores me to tears.
If she wins a slam, I will not be surprised. She is in my group of "Others". But if you ask me to name the "for sure" slam champions, she does not make that list.

I don't disagree. But Ons isn't the first or only Muslim player and if you do that for Ons, you really need to do it for the others as well if you're not playing favorites, not just because Ons is now a higher seed. For example, for years Zarina Diyas would've been the higher seed to Ons' ranking and I don't think it was being done for her. Doubles typically plays second fiddle in scheduling, so not sure it was done for Sania either, when she was playing singles or doubles.

You're gonna have to play favorites at a certain point is my guess for it to happen and Ons is the likely benefactor at whatever tournaments take place during Ramadan for the next few years at least. But regardless, it's good to be on the radar of tournament directors to take it into account.

Nobody else watching Andreescu-Sakkari? This is a real battle. Approaching two hours and Sakkari is serving to stay in the second set at 7-5 2-5. Not a lot of extended rallies, but several very long games with multiple deuces.

I've been watching for a little bit. I was too ashamed to admit this. :gorgeous:

Yet. Again. VERY few of us are "high" on Pegula's game.

Having said that- "for no reason I can see"....well, as for results for Pegula- 5 singles QF Slam results. Doubles- a Slam final and a SF. A mixed SF. WTA 1000's- one win, one final, 4 SF's.

Alexandrova- In singles in the slams- never past R3. Slam doubles- never past R2. WTA 1000's- one SF. Then, never past R3.

IMO, HEY- any of us can feel any way we want. But, you know. Facts are facts.

Completely agree, I don't remember anyone being some Jessie stan around these parts. I remember a convo we had last year at a certain point where we went over this and I think the main sentiment among those rooting for Pegula (and Shelby Rogers for that matter in that convo) was much more about hoping the American players do well, not them being confident she was going to win 1000 level events and majors consistently or anything like that. I can't recall anyone thinking she was destined for a grand slam title at all, just hoping she does well and they'd be happy for her if she were to win it.

In general, though Pegula seems to be well liked by fans, traction on her in tennis fandom hasn't been high. Given her on-court results, she should, for instance, have considerably more social media followers, but she has a comparatively small amount. Players with smaller profiles that are generally less likable/more polarizing have a larger fandom. Some of that is Jessica's own fault to me, she majorly botched an opportunity to get more fans, but it's still surprising she has a relatively lower profile. And that might very well come down to people thinking her game is boring even while thinking she's a good player.

I'm watching. I just don't have a lot to say. Is it a good match? Yes. But unfortunately, I remember their match from 2021 here and this isn't that.

Mostly, i just get great joy snarking at the TAT Canadians. Plus, this match is just too twitchy and error-y for my tastes.

What did she do to botch it?

If I was in her position I'd prefer a modest number of fans, but good relationship with peers. No need to bother with extra publicity. More pleasant life that way. I think many players go for it because they hope it will help financially.

Jabeur is going backwards fast. So are Ruud, Kasatkina and Kudermetova.
