Re: WTA 1000 ATP 1000 Miami 3/21 - 4/2 2023
I said she had a chance. And she played a solid match.
I am officially back as a WTA fan. I did suffer this final (full time Elena's fan).
Congrats to the Petra fans

Nicely done for Kvitova.
Surprisingly easy 2nd set - you've got to figure that Rybakina is somewhat tired, both physically and emotionally, after 3 1/2 rather full weeks of tennis.
The 1st set was rather wild... I figured if Kvitova won it, it was going 3 sets. But that didn't happen. In retrospect, I think the tiebreak took a lot out of Rybakina - she just didn't have enough gas left to climb the mountain of winning 2 sets in the heat after that.
But all credit to Kvitova for somehow pulling out that 1st set, and for withstanding the heat.

So happy for Petra. She had such a great tournament and really stayed focused today, it was wonderful to see.
Rybakina shouldn't have been in this final, she was not displaying that exceptional tennis she was in IW. Pegula and especially Badosa, should've bounced her out. But in that stellar first set today with the amazing 22 minute tiebreak, she showed exactly why she was a very tough out for very good players. I am hopeful she continues to play this well, but I'm not expecting it. For a quiet girl who doesn't show a ton of emotion, she appears to love when the spotlight is shining brightest playing lights out at the tournaments with by far the most attention on them and meh at a whole heck of a lot of other places in the last year or two. Now, that obviously wasn't the case before, so maybe she's just trying to figure out a balance in this new phase of her career. But until she shows me differently, I'm thinking of her as a big match player. Consistency on the rest of the tour just doesn't appear to be her focus, which I'm not mad at, if these are your results in the biggest tournaments, you can afford to take that approach.

I do. I love to watch them play. And I enjoy WTA matches a lot.
But it has been ages since I SUFFERED during a match. That visceral feeling when the player your root for misses a shot. Or hits one first serve out and your feelings are "GET ONE IN!!!" (even after she has made a ton of them in).
The kind of feeling when you say "I am going to turn the TV off because she will lose ".
That kind of fan.

Get it, Petra.

LOL, I took a nap during this freakin' match, and saved this to our DVR. Now, I get to watch this, look somehow even more lovely after my beauty sleep- and get great joy knowing how much agony this match provided for Ponchi.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 01, 2023 10:47 pmI do. (LOL, when I do watch one of my favorites' matches, I am exactly the same way, ponchi. I feel your pain.)

If Taylor's in any doubles match, I root for her. Either way, I DO wish Leylah and Taylor can find a way to play the whole match well- they've taken a set off with lousy play pretty much the whole tournament. I'll be watching for sure (great for either team to win), after John and I go birdie-ing until the annoying men's final is finished.JTContinental wrote: ↑Sat Apr 01, 2023 10:54 pm Get it, Petra.

Rybakina obviously deserved to be in the Final - because she got there via beating the players she needed to beat to get there.
Saying that she 'shouldn't have been in the Final' is rather absurd. But then, the person who wrote that is regularly quite critical of all things Rybakina - so that might - just might - have had something to do with that statement (and with the further criticism of Rybakina which naturally followed).

Happy to see Petra winning this one. Rybakina is an outstanding player, but kind of boring. To me anyway

Not surprised Rybakina lost...I did sense she was tired and jaded, looking forward to just ending it.. I assume Kvitova played well .? I cannot see any matches here...
