Rybakina’s shoulder appears to be a problem, and she is inconsistent. She’s in the field.ashkor87 wrote:So no Sinner and no Rybakina? Of course 'field' covers them all but I think Rybakina has a better chance than Sabalenka for sure..and Coco at 35 is a bit too high..she hasn't quite completed her moulting yet...maybe next year at the AO..
Same with Sinner for me. No injury but far from Alcaraz and Novak in B5.
Going big with Coco on account of BG and beating Iga and winning 11 of 12 matches since Wimbledon (probably 12 of 13 after Sunday)

I have my doubts about Jabeur, too. She can't stay healthy.skatingfan wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 1:26 am Rybakina's shoulder is in a bad way - I don't think she'll be a factor in New York.

Same, and the scar tissue from Wimbledon... not sure she will ever get over it in the window she has. I watched the match with someone I consider a tennis expert - regular person, but way smarter about tennis than I am - and he immediately said, "We'll never see her again." He meant she will never win big again. I laughted it off - he's bombastic like that - but he might be right. She won't play at this top level forever. If she isn't at her absolute best mentally, forget it.JTContinental wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 8:28 amI have my doubts about Jabeur, too. Would seem right, but there have been exceptions. Lendl lost his first four finals. Murray too. Goran and Novotna failed 3 and 2 times at W before winning.
The problem with Jabeur is that she lost two finals to players ranked below her. Rybakina is now a "force" because of that Wimbledon, and she has added a couple of 1000's; we have yet to anoint Vondrousova in the same fashion because she has won little else. So Ons is going to need some very good breaks.
I would still not write her off, though.

It's not just that she has lost 3 finals. She shouldn't feel bad about the first two. The last one could haunt her, and she turns 29 next week. She might not have time to get over it. Careers are longer, but not many women are playing their best tennis at 33, 34, are they? We'll see.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 5:05 pm Would seem right, but there have been exceptions. Coco has gone W-Qf (losing to the eventual winner)-W this summer.
No way she is not one of the favorites.

i think Coco should be the second favorite, and will be the 2nd betting favorite, not far behind Iga. A little ahead of Sabalenka. Coco was 12/1 for the US Open before the Cincy final ended. Pretty low.

Gauff had six double faults and zero aces today.
Before she is in the top three favorites of a slam (or rather, before she should be), she needs to actually beat someone good at a slam. The way she's playing now, she appears immune to an upset, but beating Swiatek when Swiatek is spraying the ball all over the court in Cincinnati doesn't do it for me. Yet.

To be fair, 5 of those double were in her first couple of service games, and then she worked it out. Neither player was at their best today--they both looked pretty worn out, so a week of rest and practice will do them good.

And we notice!
Of course if you had given Coco a 0% chance of winning a lot of people would have said something

Kasatkina is on ESPN mic'd during practice, She says the courts are a lot slower than Cincy. She is practicing on Ashe and she said it's her first "appearance" on the court, ever! Has never played or practiced there.
Medvedev was mic'd earlier and didn't mention court speed but said the balls and court are very different and he loves the way the NY courts are playing, just what he likes.
We need a report on outer courts. Both of them were on Ashe.

Slower than Cincy? Expect several marathons and several retirements. And matches with 1:3 Winners/Unforced errors ratios.
