by ashkor87 What is wrong with Cirstea?
by ashkor87 Surprised Djokovic has withdrawn...is he targeting USO or not?!
by ponchi101 He is, and his statement is that he will be in NYC precisely long before the Open to train.
I find that to be the wrong approach. But he has 24 more slams than I do, so I guess that he knows how to train for a slam better than anybody.
by skatingfan I think for Novak the emotional toll of finally the gold is probably more than the physical but his knee probably could use some more rest.
by ponchi101 I am not putting you on, Skating, but: how does winning take a toll? At worst, the elation should carry him for a long time. He really, really, now has NOTHING ELSE to win. He is the sole player ever to have win it all (Agassi did not win ALL MS1000's).

Well we have to remember the stress and pressure that Djokovic put on himself to win this one title. That has to take a toll.

But I wonder what the tournament organizers think about such a statement. It is a 1000; it is not "a practice tournament".

It's not like the tournament organizers are that interested in the well being of the players, so I don't see why the players should be that interested in the well being of the tournaments.

by ashkor87 With that win over Fritz, Korda seems to be fulfilling his potential at last ..is he the best US player now? Or is it Paul?
by Suliso I think it's still Fritz.
by skatingfan Fritz is US #1 right now, but the top 4 are all grouped together between 12th & 15th.

If you want to go that way, how about who was the best American player on Saturday? Do you think you can have a new best American player on Thursday? Do we go with a system in which we play hot potato? As in: if you are #50 but you beat the #1 player from anywhere, you get his ranking.
You don't like rankings; you have made that clear. But if we don't have them, and they are meaningless, then it becomes a game of preferences. I really like Paul and Korda, but their numbers are not what Fritz' are. So, I just can't say that they are better.
by Suliso It's not just rankings right now. It's also career high ranking, age, best career results, best wins over even better players + surface factors. All that together makes me say Fritz is still the best.
Of course these things are not forever. If one of the others has amazing results for the next 4 months we'll need to rethink.
by jazzyg Korda is absolutely the most talented U.S. player and it is not that close.
But Fritz has maximized his ability to this point while Korda has underachieved on big stages. That is why their rankings are where they are. I cannot imagine Fritz contending for a slam title ever. I definitely can see Korda doing it, but it requires more toughness, consistency and health than he has exhibited so far in his young career.
by jazzyg Osaka's star power went down in three sets in the second round of qualifying to Krueger, who has more game power than Osaka right now. It's going to be a long, laborious road back for Osaka.

I thought I was reading it wrong when I saw she was in Qualies.
I thought I was reading it wrong again when I saw she lost to Krueger.
Naomi needs to get back in the trenches and start playing 250's to get her match playing brain back.

by ponchi101 Saw the Lehecka/Medvedev match last night.
Daniil is in trouble. He simply explodes and let's his game go to pieces way too fast. For example, he has this penchant to go for huge second serves when he is in trouble, and that simply won't work.
Lehecka played a solid match, but Daniil should have, at least, pushed him to a third set. He had more BP but was unable to convert any.
And this cannot be penciled to "post olympic" blues.
Maybe time to start the dreaded "Daniil is washed up" topic.
by ashkor87 Agree with you about Medvedev
by ponchi101 Rybakina looking pretty bad. Once the point starts, she has no movement.
by JTContinental Elina Avanesyan suddenly playing with a flag by her name. A quick Wikipedia search says she is now representing Armenia since August.
by ponchi101 I gather that Russian passport is causing a lot of problems.

From what I saw he just wasn't sharp enough, and kept giving Monfils openings to get back in the match. He had multiple break points in the 2nd & 3rd sets, and couldn't convert. I'm not surprised that he lost early this year in Cincinnati after the loss in the Olympic final.

There's got to be something else.
My understanding of the issue is that it's a confidence thing. When she swings properly she hits the ball well, and consistently, and when she hesitates we see the errors.

by ashkor87 Very surprised Samsonova has come this far .would have thought the court would be too fast for her. But then, her huge serve must help on a fast court.
Not at all surprised Leylah is doing well, her reflexes, ability to redirect the ball, speed around the court are what got her to the finals of the USO..

The service line judge would have been seated at the other side. But having somebody else on court to see what happened would have been good.
They all behaved well, but this was one case in which "replay the point" would have worked. The call by the chair was wrong, when seen in slo-mo. But in real time, it was too quick.

I am not putting you on, Skating, but: how does winning take a toll? At worst, the elation should carry him for a long time. He really, really, now has NOTHING ELSE to win. He is the sole player ever to have win it all (Agassi did not win ALL MS1000's).
If we are to nitpick, then "won all masters 1000" does not pass the scrutiny. It is not the fault of Novak that some events change the venue and the spot on the calendar. It used to be Madrid Indoors (last played in 2008). Also the last clay TMS before the French was Hamburg (was denoted to 500 series in 2009). Novak did play those events in 2006-2008. So he had 3 tries for each event. In 2008 he was already a Slam champion, so it's not like he was a complete rookie. Just did not manage to win them and then they were relocated.

I don't get your point, Mick. What you say is completely true; Novak did not win the Hamburg Masters even though it was played for three years during his career, because it was then demoted (the tournament, not him). But Hamburg was replaced by Madrid, which he has won.
My point was not about his accomplishments; I am past that one and as much as I don't like Novak, the claim for GOAT it too solid for me to say he is not. But my point is that I don't see how winning that elusive Olympic Gold could be TOLLING.
He has had the greatest career of all time. If he loses in 1R at the USO, sure, he will not feel good. But the year has been a success for him already.

That was not to put Novak down. Obviously he is the most successful in Masters as well as the Slams and overall in almost every stat category. My point that these categories are sometimes not that cut and dry. For instance Roger won more masters and YEC than Novak with best of five finals. Every time something is changing we are losing the point of comparison. This is the reason I
HATE the idea of slams going to best of 3 format.
by patrick Agree on Slams needing to stay best of the 5 along with the following:
1. WTA Slam SF and F needs to be best of 5
2. ATP Masters final needs to be best of 5 with the finalists getting a bye at the next Masters tournament if not a bye already
by JTContinental The UFE count could easily reach triple digits in a best of 5 women's match, so I could probably go without experiencing that.

Yes. That was dumb. How to ruin an immaculate image in one bad moment.
It will mean nothing. Roger busted his racquet during that Novak match at Miami (IW?) a long time ago. But that was totally out of character.
About the match.
What happened? Was Carlos off? He was playing well last night.
His excuse in his apology was that it is difficult to control emotions when your heartrate is elevated, which is, of course, absurd. Own it, Carlos!

I'm not sure about automatic entry to the next year Masters. The thing is - the entry-list for Masters is composed on the current year performance (race). The results from last year are not relevant. Also there is a stipulation for Slam winners. They are getting an entry if their ranking is inside top 20. In 2004 Gaudio got in while being #10 over Agassi (#8) and Nalbandian (#9). In 2002 both Al Costa (#11) and ToJo (#14) were outside top8 and their slam wins granted them participation. It means that somebody from top 8 did not get in. If in addition to this we will award last year Masters finalists, it may get even worse: potentially #5 player can be snubbed. So I would keep the entry rules as they are and bring back best of 5 final.

Masters 1000 events, not the World Tour Final.
by ashkor87 Looking forward to Swiatek-Saba semis...will tell us a lot about how Swiatek can adapt to these much faster courts, how Sabalenka is finding her rhythm..Saba has been more and more impressive in every match this week. Can Saba push Swiatek on to her back foot, or Swiatek drive Saba from side to side...
by ashkor87 Not surprised Rune is in the semis...the quick courts suit him..not so Zverev perhaps..
by ponchi101 Solid win by Aryna. A few too many MP's, but you only need one. We may have a renewed rivalry, now that they are off clay.
by ashkor87 On a fast court, Pegula should do well...60% Pegula, 40 % Sabalenka in the finals. Theory says defense is more important than power on a fast court..it is a good test of the theory if nothing else.
by ashkor87 If this were the USO I would have reversed that- Saba is simply a higher class player than Pegula, and class matters at a major. Pegula, to me, is the best of the Tier 2 players..very good players who will not win a major, whereas Sabalenka has proved she is Tier 1.
by ashkor87 Of course, there have been a few rare tier 2 players who did win a major . Vondrousova perhaps but then she may yet prove that she is Tier 1, Wozniacki is another. My list of tier2 players would include Svitolina, Pegula, Alexandrova, Keys, Samsonova,Bencic,Collins, Kasatkina...Future Tier 1 players as of now are Andreeva, Noskova and (sticking my neck out) Parks.

by ashkor87 I must say I really hate watching Tiafoe.. the way he hits his forehand, sets my teeth on edge.. that has to be the ugliest shot in all of tennis.. Serve is great, backhand is ok but forehand!
by JTContinental I'm no Wozniacki fan, but I'm not sure Tier 2 players spend 71 weeks ranked #1
by ashkor87 Rankings show how consistently you played, not how good you are. At her best, Wozniacki was nowhere near being the best player in the world. In fact, she had to endure numerous taunts because of it (undeserved, of course, because she didn't ask to be #1)

Absolutely untrue. Ranking shows how consistently good you are, not just "how consistent you are". There is a reason why there are much more slam winners than players who ascended to #1.
by mick1303 Also ranking evolved since Connors's days. Now it is impossible to pad you ranking playing smaller tournaments. You have to play mandatory schedule inevitably crossing paths with the very best players.
by ashkor87 Well, the Tier thing is completely subjective, based on my (expert?) judgment...I don't look at rankings much. We have debated this ad nauseum on this forum, so I won't start that again!
by ashkor87 A reasonable comment could be (before anyone makes it) - if it is all my judgement, what is there to discuss? Your judgement is your judgement and my judgement is my judgement..My response would be that judgements, whether mine or anyone else's, are based on something - we can discuss/debate that. My judgements are based on the capability on the player, in the game the person has and shows. I do not go by rankings.
For instance, I rate Alexandrova very high (albeit Tier 2) because she has beaten good players again and again, especially on fast courts - she returns serve really well, and defends well too. Similarly Samsonova - I have been following her for a couple of years, and have been astonished at how powerful she is - I have seen her almost literally blow Bencic off the court on clay. Paolini is someone I rate highly too, especially on fast courts, because she is one of the best movers in the game, up there with Coco and Iga. And so on...

Well, if you go by "I like player A more than player B" rather than "A is a better player than B" then it makes all the sense and there is little anybody can object against ))

But Ashkor. Every time you bring the TIER thing and the RANKINGS thing, you are starting the conversation again
You like to make your predictions, and that is fine. For example, you just made the claim that Parks will be a Tier 2 player one day. I see no shred of evidence for that; she is currently ranked 116 at age 23. Maybe she will do a Paolini and get better but, so far, she is a Tier 4 player, and she seems to like it there.
And you have always been very high on Alexandrova and when she does well, you praise her a lot. But she has been silent for quite a while now, and you don't mention that. She is a fine player that you have compared to Pegula and have even claimed they are equals, which, based on the last few weeks, is a comparison that is hard to accept.
And I did say this before. When you say that there are players that are in a given TIER, you are giving them a de facto ranking. It is just that it is not as numerically precise as the actual ones.

Well last night his singles match was scheduled for 10 am this morning, so 830 pm is an improvement.

It's ranking based on vibes, and feels, which can be interesting if we're identifying players that are underachieving, or overachieving, but when a players ranking doesn't really move over the course of a number of years then it's just a player we like.
by ponchi101 Look at Osaka. Is she a HOF? Of course she is. Is she a top player? Sure, you can say that.
Is she properly ranked at the moment? Her results say so.

This is because when we say "ranking" there is an ambiguity. Different kinds of ranking exist. There is current ranking - the way tours calculate. It reflects the performance for the last 52 weeks. And there is a career ranking - overall achievements of the player.
by mick1303 BTW, I'm contemplating an additional component to my weighted ranking. Or it may exist separately. An idea is inspired by ELO, but so far it will be very simplified ("bastardized") version. I call it "Opponents' index". If a player beats #1 ranked player, he gets 1 point. If he beats #2 ranked player, he gets 0.99, for #3 he gets 0.98. For #100 he gets 0.01. He gets nothing for beating the players outside top 100. He gets nothing for losing a match. These values will be added up over the considered period. So far the obstacle is that ranking only started in August of 1973, so I have to fill those early years - from 1968 to the beginning of official ranking. But I have the results and I have my weighted ranking in its current form - it will serve as a replacement.
by ponchi101 Very much alike when the WTA used to award point for a particularly spectacular win. If I remember well, beating Martina in the 1980's was worth 50 points.
Sole problem was, Martina never got points because she was the top ranked player. She thought it was unfair, and the system was canned.
Let's see what your improved index tells us.

I will have to look it up - how exactly this ranking component was calculated back then (Or maybe just ask ChatGPT ))). Sounds counter-intuitive that #1 never gets any points. He/she still shall get some for beating #2,#3 etc.
by ponchi101 Nope. The system was that you got points for beating players above you, never below. So Martina never got points, Chrissie only got points when beating Martina.
Since Martina was worth 50 points, beating her was almost as good as winning a small tournament. Of course, very few people ever cashed on that bonus.
by dryrunguy There was a time when (WTA only?) players got bonus points for beating someone ranked either above or below them. At one point, women got 200 bonus ranking points for beating the #1 player, e.g., when Tathiana Garbin accidentally beat Henin in the second round at Roland Garros. But Henin got a few bonus points for beating her first round opponent. (Can't remember who that was.)
by ashkor87 Sabalenka seems to have served really well..that helps a lot on a fast court - the only aspect of Sabalenka's game that a fast court suits!

I think she probably just took a week off - they made the final last week in Toronto after Dabrowski played in the Olympic Mixed Doubles matches two weeks ago.
