Tsitsipas has a Russian mother. As for diversity everyone is welcome to compete and they do, but hard to overcome various advantages we have on this continent.

I'm not sure we can draw a conclusion from this. It's a moment in time. But it could be that the men in most countries have more options for sports and many go elsewhere, while for women, tennis is one of the best options. If it's a trend, it's interesting. The ATP Finals this year still has 7 countries represented. The WTA has been heavy on Russians in the past.
by ponchi101 I find it more concerning that the USA has no one there (it has happened before, we know). Like it or not, the USA is too important a market not to be represented.

Give Benny Shelton one more year.
We're not in the Top 8, but we are heavy in the Top 20.
by mick1303 US still hosts 11 tournaments out of 66 (with 9 players in top 100). The second place is France with 6 tournaments (13 players in top 100). Australia has 9 players in top 100 and only hosts 3 tournaments (+ United Cup). Spain has 4 tournaments (7 player in top 100). It looks to me that US has dis-proportionally more tournaments. Not sure what is the structure of revenue for ATP, but if we look at tickets sales only, some US-based tournaments shall move elsewhere.

After next year the US will down two more tournaments, and tournaments have been leaving the US for a long time. The disproportionate number of US tournaments is vestige of the countries place in the sport in the past.

by ashkor87 got to watch highlights of Djoko-Rune.. court is clearly quite fast, as expected. Djokovic served really well when it mattered.. Agree, courts are too slow overall throughout the year. Rallies are too long. Murray has complained about this. It's making injuries worse.
by ti-amie I actually don't like tennis played on superfast courts and stopped watching completely during the '90's. I started watching again just as Sampras was leaving the sport because I wanted to introduce my daughter to tennis. I feel the faster the court the less strategy is involved so I guess that explains why I prefer clay court tennis.

Nothing wrong with either but we do need a variety..so different styles can flourish..
by ashkor87 I always liked the USOpen surface because it supports baseliners, volleyers equally .any style except pure defence ...favora attacking tennis of any kind .

Fair point but Bercy is pretty fast too, and Alcaraz squandered that opportunity...
by ashkor87 It is a bit puzzling, though, why Alcaraz doesn't like the faster surfaces .Melbourne, Bercy, Turin..he serves well, has good reflexes, volleys well, doesn't take an excessive backswing, and is the quickest player on the tour ...all just mindset ?

I don't think it's a matter of not liking a fast surface. I think it's more of a case of not having played matches on that type of surface very often. This is first year in Turin, and he's played Bercy a few times, and Melbourne a few times, though the Australian Open courts bounce higher than either Bercy, or Turin, so there not quite the same.

Almost certainly true but it is still faster than the average...Paris is rated 37.5, Turin 42.1, second fastest, after Shanghai

ptmcmahon Sinner beat Djokovic in a third set tiebreaker. He's not through yet, but winning one set means at worst he will be in a three way tie at 2-1 and even sets and it will come down to games. Guess I better take note of those now
Right now Sinner is +6, Djokovic +1, and Rune -3. Rune not getting to get games in hurts (assuming he would have won!) Based on above even the three games today didn't count.

It would really suck to win that match, end up 2-1, and still not go through. What a win. I didn’t think he would hold it together after losing serve at 4-2 in the third.

I think Rune can quality in #2 spot if he wins in 3 sets, Novak wins in 2, and Novak has the higher percentage of games won.
Rune.png
by ptmcmahon Correct, that's the only way Rune can get to #2. Since Djokovic wins in two in that scenario he is at least +3 games. Rune would then need to be +7 games to pass Djokovic... which would put Sinner third in game wins at -1 or worse.
I still wish somehow I could be paid to be the person who figures out all these sport scenarios for a living.
by Owendonovan I can't stand when a player holds a finger to their ear, this time Djokovic, to the crowd after winning a set. (but I do love when they lose the match)
by ashkor87 Djokovic commented after the match that in matches like these, very few opportunities arise, and Sinner was more brave and decisive when they came up.. a fair comment, I thought. Also, I thought Djokovic really needs to learn when to go to the net and when not - some of his approaches today were rather poor, allowed Sinner to rifle the bal past him easily..

I love that insight from Djokovic, about Sinner playing those few big chances well. Interesting about Djokovic's approaches... I guess Boris didn't teach him. Maybe he was trying to get Sinner to make a mistake, put pressure on him. Better have a lead in the game if you're going to do that.

by ashkor87 Apparently (I didn't see it) Djokovic tried to serve and volley at 40-0, 5-5 jn the first set, for the first time in the match..he got passed and never recovered in that set..an illustration of not knowing when to get to the net..but I do find it amazing- this is a player who has every record, has won everything there is to win, but he still has areas he can get better at..!
by ashkor87 Is Hurkacz actually eligible to qualify for the semis? Or is he just a filler, with no rights ? With his big serve, he could actually beat Djokovic and Rune..then what?

Hurkacz can't advance - he gets prize money, and ranking points if he wins.
by ptmcmahon I mean technically he's eligible. But he has no chance. First criteria is wins - possible he could tie Djokovic and Rune with 1 win each. But critiera 2 is number of matches played and he would lose that.

by ti-amie I actually forced myself to stay awake and watch Sinner vs Rune. Rune's immaturity cost him that match. The minute he started fighting with the chair I knew he would lose despite taking the second set.
As for Sinner I'm still meh. He's very quick around the court and makes decent decisions during a match, something Rune is going to have to learn to do/
Anyway if it was Djokovic's intent to make the two young guns slug it out while he rested he got what he wanted. Sinner kept fiddling with his lower left back but never called the physio. Rune got his upper calf taped.
by ashkor87 Sinner and Alcaraz are the future of tennis....maybe on fast courts and slow respectively...both are complete players
by ashkor87 some commentators are saying Medvedev will lose to ALcaraz because he wont try hard enough.. I find that mildly insulting - these are all professionals, they dont want to lose.. and in future, the result, whichever way it gos, will weigh on their minds. Medvedev would not want to give Alcaraz the confidence, since he may meet him soon, either here in the finals, or at the AO, hard to see him giving Alcaraz an easy pass.

Tend to agree, they are competitors first. Probably have a hard time turning it off. They are programmed to try to win every match or they wouldn't be so good. But I can see some circumstances where they might not try their absolute hardest in every situation, and that might lead to a loss. I think they can live with it if it's a strategic decision, and the opponent knows and it doesn't have the same psychological effect.
by Owendonovan What would prompt these commentators to say such a thing? It's not like Medvedev is some notorious tanker of matches.

by ashkor87 what is your guess? I certainly think Sinner will be in the finals and Djokovic will, too but I am a bit less confident of that.. maybe 65-35 and 55-45 respectively..

Sinner Alcaraz
that would be a preview of the future!

(2) Carlos Alcaraz VS (1) Novak Djokovic
by ashkor87 Sinner really seems to have broken through...he has now won 6 matches in a row against the top 5....
by Suliso Round two of Sinner vs Djokovic was a conventional choice and this time the right one as well. After the first game where Alcaraz had two bp's he didn't stand a chance.
by Suliso Who'll win the final now? I think it's pretty close, but small edge to the old guy. He just knows how to bring these things home.

I would still bet on Sinner..the court is fast, the crowd will support him and he seems to have made the improvement needed...
by ashkor87 Meanwhile I really need to figure out why Alcaraz doesn't play well on fast courts...

I thought his match against Medvedev was probably the best match he played in a really long time. He plays extremely well on fast courts.
What bothered me today was the degree to which he just... quit. After he didn't break back in Novak's 3-2 service game in the second, he just quit, which was probably cumulative from not breaking in the opening game of the match--not to mention getting broken a few more times. On a few occasions late in the match, when Novak his first serves that were called out, Carlitos was already walking to the other side of his court to receive and had to go back to where he was to receive a second serve. And his barking to his box late in the second was downright Murray-esque. He was more out of sorts than I have ever seen him be. It was hard to watch. And disappointing.
But Novak does that to people. Today, Novak was just plain surgical. And euthanizistic. (Yes, I just created a word.)
by ashkor87 Yes, Djokovic breaks your spirit, not just your serve..apparently Kyrgios said Djoko is the greatest player to ever walk the earth ..surprising, ..considering he was not a fan..in fact owns a 2-1 head to head record against him.

Kyrgios seemed to become a fan at Wimbledon, joking about how they would go partying together after the final (to which Djokovic laughed and said, "in your dreams.") I guess he changed his tune.

If you're going to keep making up great words, you'll have to start popping up more in the threads I read. I never see you anymore!
Great analysis, makes me want to watch the replay and notice these things. I didn't see the match.
by ashkor87 Ram and Salisbury have won the doubles,!! I wonder how Sock is making out with pickle ball..

You're the only one thinking about Jack Sock.
Ram and Salisbury are 10-0 in Turin in the past two years. The winning team gets $350,000 but $940,000 if they go undefeated. That's a huge increase.

Yes, you were. Djokovic can adapt to any surface, he stands alone in that respect...

Yes probably because Ram is of Indian origin. I have been tracking him since his heroics at the Orange Bowl as a junior

I didn't know about these Orange Bowl heroics! What happened?
by ashkor87 He won the Easter Bowl, actually, the under18 title- also was under 14 national champ.. very promising as a junior, didn't do as well in pro singles, probably because he is a bit slow on his feet?
by ashkor87 So that is Djokovic's 7th..Federer has 6..interesting that Nadal has ...zero!
by mick1303 Regarding two wins against the same opponent. In 2003 young Federer done what Sinner could not do. Agassi played a role of Novak there. He had 3-0 H2H against Roger at that time. Roger beat him twice. RR match was tense. The final - not so much, Federer became himself over the course of that tournament.
by ashkor87 The ATP leaderboard rates Alcaraz #10 in the world on returning on hard courts, though he is #1 in returning on clay..Medvedev is #1 on hard court returns .
Maybe a clue to why he (Alcaraz) doesn't do so well on fast hard courts..
Look at his less than stellar record at Shanghai, Bercy, Melbourne and Turin, the fastest courts currently....
