I think that the reason he appeared to be less confrontational before is that the people around him ignored most of what he wanted to do because they understood that actions have consequences. Now he's got TV personalities and sycophants who act as if every thought he expresses is the word of god and they act on them. That's why the National Guard ended up with no food, water, or habitation when they arrived in LA.

Breaking from the NY Times: A person pretending to be a police officer assassinated a Democratic state legislator in Minnesota and killed the lawmaker’s husband in “an act of targeted political violence,” Gov. Tim Walz said Saturday. The assailant also shot and injured another Democratic lawmaker and his wife, officials said.

State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, died in the attack at their home in the Minneapolis suburbs. State Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times at their house in a nearby suburb, but remained alive as of Saturday morning.

1) He has no plans to seek a third term (constitutionality be damned).
2) He doesn't have a few sons to succeed him and carry on the political dynasty.
3) He doesn't also have a whole host of political acolytes waiting in the wings to transform Project 2025 into Project 2035.
4) A sufficient number of U.S. voters actually possess the power to prevent #1 and a sufficient number of functioning brain cells to prevent #2 and #3.

Well, I thought about her. And she's probably be the least dangerous of the lot, but I decided the brothers probably wouldn't allow it. And in true dynasty fashion, she should have to wait her turn. And then the spawn of Don Jr.'s coke-compromised loins should be ready.

Not being prepared is a given. We know how incompetent they are.
They cannot show interest because daddy would not allow that.
Granted, this is farfetched; the USA is still not a full dictatorship but rather a country in which a group of their worst people have gained control. But there are still plenty of checks and balances, most important of them all, the fact that the GOP is full of other men that have grand ambitions. It would take considerable maneuvering to install a dynastic system.

Not father-son. The sole example I can think of was the Castro brothers (Fidel handed the reins over to Raul).
We have had transitions from one person to another (Chavez to Maduro) but that was disguised through stolen elections.
