Even though he's not as as good as the truly elite players when they are in top form, he's always had more game than he is given credit for. As long as they don't declare the semis or final a grand slam quarterfinal, he should be in good shape.

Fritz could trouble him in the semifinal if they play because return of serve is his weakest shot, but I can't see Fritz beating him despite his head-to-head 5-3 lead (Rublev is 1-0 on clay, beating him a tight three setter on his way to the Monte Carlo title last year). Sinner is not 100-percent healthy and although Medvedev has owned him on hard courts, the matchup should favor Rublev on clay.
90% of Sinner may be still enough

Indeed, Rublev seems like a favorite now.

Someday Andreeva will be competitive with Sabalenka, but today was not that day.

There's some speculation that Sinner is a little hurt, right?

Suliso wrote: Wed May 01, 2024 4:13 pm Alcaraz has lost his title at Madrid. He might now drop to #4 and almost certainly will be no higher than #3 seed at RG (assuming everyone plays).
True, but is there much difference between #3 and #4 from any practical pov?

Wow! He has withdrawn. More serious than I thought ..and anyway Rome would mean more to him .?

This is probably Fritz' best chance of winning another Master's...only Rublev to beat...
And TF has been playing very well ...says he has added variety..

For a while he was the only US male who played a full spring European clay season, willing to play qualies even. He's been working at it.

interestingly enough, the women's tournament looks fairly 'normal' - the big 3 are in the semis.. the men's field looks pretty ragged, ravaged by injuries and withdrawals..
I expect Rybakina to wn this now - she beat Swiatek on a much slower clay court, and beating Sabalenka is always difficult, but she has done it often and she is playing very well..

Evidently he has been weight-training in the middle of the season, which Coco V said was unusual - usually you do heavy weight-training in the off-season.

Rybakina needs just 21 min to take the first set from an error prone Sabalenka 6-1 who has taken a potty break.
