by Ainsley I am going to miss the Alycia Parks singles match tomorrow against the Swede Bjorklund because I will be in school, but I would love to see what her body language and on court attitude is like. I will try and catch some of her evening doubles match with Sloane Stephens and see if her attitude is any different than it was when she was in Merida.

by ti-amie Parks, the #7 seed, dropped the first set 6-4 to Bjorklund. She broke to open the second set but Bjorklund is threatening to break back.

I just looked up this match as I didn't get to watch it and saw that Parks lost the match in 3 sets. I also saw Parks had 14 Aces and 11 :o Double Faults. I also imagine she had a ton of unforced errors. I wonder if she was in a pissy mood on the court today.

by Ainsley There looks like some really good matches in Austin that I am going to miss. The Stephens versus Townsend match should be a really good one.

Down 6-7(5) 2-4 15-40 to Sherif in Monterrey, Osorio retires with a left hip injury.

by ponchi101 Seen her play enough to know she does not retire unless it is for real.
Still, more retirements. I am waiting for the person that keeps the match data for both ATP and WTA to update 2022, to keep those numbers.

I think a lot of it has to do with the calendar. There shouldn't have to be quite as much thought put into how to maximize the calendar which evolves according to a W/L record for each tournament, add this one, drop that one as the season marches on.

by ponchi101 She can't do that. Her ranking is not high enough for her to decide where to play. She plays where she can.
And, as much as one can praise her, she is not a player that can claim fatigue. She regularly loses by Wednesday, so she usually plays 1-2 matches per week.

by ti-amie This Friedsam vs Andreeva match is now into it's 4th hour (3h6m) and I wish I could say it was riveting tennis.

by ti-amie It's finally over with Friedsam taking the match 7-5, 6-7(2), 7-6(8) in Austin. Total match time 3h 11m

by ponchi101 I'll take your word for it, but with that score, it looks like it was a scorcher.

by Deuce Cocciaretto beat Tatjana Maria in 2 tiebreak sets.
Tatjana was ahead in both sets - but she rather routinely lacks the stamina to play well consistently at this level. And the stamina isn't likely to get any better in the future at 35 years old with 2 young children...

by JTContinental Katie Volynets was down 0-5 ad-out in the third set of her match against third seeded Potapova, and proceeded to win 27 out of the next 32 points to win it 7-5.

by ti-amie Volynets was up 5-0 in the second set. She's now 5-3 in the second set.

by JazzNU Nice to see Athleta being a sponsor. Are they only willing to sponsor stuff in Texas? I think they made a sponsorship appearance in Fort Worth too. It's nice to see, but I hope this isn't limited to Texas. They should be doing better in general with WTA players and/or tournaments.

I've heard about Volynets before but this is the first time I've heard of or watched Stearns play. If Volynets had done the walkabout she did in the first set against a seasoned player she'd be in the showers by now. If Stearns had more experience at the pro level she'd be doing an on court interview. Time will tell about both of them I guess.

Stearns is the NCAA champ, but don't know anything about her beyond that. Based on watching her some this week, seems like she's got a better game for the pro tour than what I've seen out of Emma Navarro.

I'll be honest and say, I've heard more about Katie's last name in the last few years than her game or her prospects.

by Deuce Garcia just beat Sherif in straight sets - so in one of the semis, she'll play the winner of the Mertens - Cocciaretto match, which is starting now.

by Deuce And it will be Mertens who plays Garcia in the semi-final, as Mertens beat Cocciaretto in straight sets.

by ashkor87 Kostyuk has the most up-side of any player here ..I remember Osaka playing her and then commenting that it is frightening how good Kostyuk is..if we are buying futures, Kostyuk is probably a good one to buy

by ashkor87 Neither Stearns not Volynets is as good as Kostyuk

by ponchi101 About Kostyuk. I think she has stagnated a bit, but solely because of the war issues. It is no secret she has been the most vocal of all Ukrainians regarding banning Russian and Belarusian players.
But yes, the upside is good. She has power, she has speed, the strokes are solid. I think she just has a hard time, these days, to put it together on court.

ashkor87 wrote: Sat Mar 04, 2023 4:17 pm Neither Stearns not Volynets is as good as Kostyuk
That's true, but then again not a very high bar. :D

by ashkor87 Kostyuk could be really good some day, she is only 20..

by ashkor87 Now she has beaten Collins, quite a feat. Always happy to see a young player coming good ..she is very powerful, should do well even at IW and Miami..

by Deuce I wouldn't say that beating Collins right now is 'quite a feat', as Collins has been losing a lot of late - perhaps owing to her health problems.

by ashkor87 saw some highlights of Austin for the first time.. I kind of like this court, it is a nice color (conventional, not garish) and a reasonable speed, neither too fast nor too slow.. well done, Austin!

She played well at Dubai, gave Bencic a fright..she was doing ok now she has done well..even at the AO, she beat Anisimova and lost only to Pegula..she has been losing only to good players like Bencic...so a bit of luck and she will go far.

^ She has a hell of a lot of maturing to do before I count myself as a fan.
Showing respect for your opponent is the #1 rule of sports. Unless your opponent has done something horrible, there is no excuse for this kind of garbage. Simply having been born in Russia is not a crime.

(For those unaware, Kostyuk has been EXTREMELY vocal about wanting all Russian and Belarusian players to be banned from the tours, and has vowed to not shake the hand of any Russian or Belarussian she plays.)

^ It's nice to see that moving in unison in doubles still works.
Notice the two of them at net (very rare these days, sadly), and both moving back at the same time.
I love that kind of doubles - it's much more dynamic - and I feel more efficient - that the silly one up, one back formation.
