by ashkor87 Some mouth-watering matches today - vekic Sloane, bencic Collins, Murray tsitsi, bublik wolf..

by ashkor87 Cirstea playing very well these days, Osta better watch out. Krejcikova too - Andreeva is quite capable of knocking her off, on grass..

by texasniteowl OK, are we ready! The weather forecast I saw calls for clouds, but no rain! Cross your fingers!

edit: ESPN just said 20% chance of rain for a bit so we will see. I looked at Weather Underground which doesn't show any.

by JTContinental In terrible hair choices on the same court, JJ Wolf is back to his ridiculous mullet and Bublik's neck beard is unforgiveable.

by meganfernandez Muchova had several match points and is now in the third and hurt after a bad slip. Her upper thigh is taped. Movement compromised. Was she up 40-love on her 5-4 or 6-5 service game and lost it? Oof

by meganfernandez Krejcikova retired down a set and 4-0. Muchova played it out while obviously injured. But also, maybe Krejcikova's injury timeout in her last match was legitimate?

The retirement sends Andreeva through to the third round. She plays Potapova or Juvan next, and that winner will likely play Keys. Good draw for Keys.

Touche, but I'd go with Keys.

by Suliso #12 Kudermetova is out already and #13 Haddad Maia is a set down to Cristian.

But that is precisely the issue with always asking for a MTO. You start crying wolf with frequency and then, if you ever get injured for real, us the fans start doubting you.
Borges yesterday was clearly injured in his match against Cerundolo. He played the match out. So, if he ever retires from a match, I will give him the benefit of the doubt.
With Krejcikova, I just can't.

Fair. Just can't fathom why Krejcikova wouldn't say out there for 2 more games. What if Andreeva slipped and got hurt? Or got nervous closing it out? Anything can happen. And if it doesn't, you just shake hands. You don't have to risk further injury to stand out there and bat the ball around lightly.

by ashkor87 Leylah fighting well but I think Garcia's serve will win the day

by ashkor87 now, as I feared, Cirstea has beaten Ostapenko.. well, well. Cirstea is certainly enjoying a resurgence.. wonder who/what is behind it..

both came to pass, in very different ways, I guess.. Cirstea is probably the most under-rated player in the world right now..

by ponchi101 I won't go to the extreme that she is the most under-rated player right now. She had a good early season, and then went off the map.
Tommy Johansson is working with her now, and it has been a good partnership.

And Ostapenko: when she loses, it is usually because she keeps hitting balls at 100% on every shot. And somedays, they don't land in. And those days are not infrequent.

I can't keep track of Cirstea's comings and goings from relevance/dangerous status.

by ashkor87 Cirstea has moved to a different level this year, rather consistently now.

by Suliso I'm pleasantly surprised that both Vekic and Bencic won today. Both had tough opposition.

What kind of different level? I'm not sure what you mean. She had good tournaments in Miami, and Indian Wells, and won a 125 event in May but otherwise it's been first & second round loses

by skatingfan Fritz out to Ymer, the Younger, in five sets. Fritz let two sets to love.

by ti-amie BTW what happened to Ruud? He ate a bagel in the fifth set.

by Suliso Fritz has a high ranking, but doesn't really have a high class. Doesn't posses that extra something some players are able to bring at Slams.

by mick1303 I don't think Medvedev has a good record in postponed matches. Wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he loses tomorrow.

by ti-amie At the pace this Murray/Tsitsipas match is being played the 11p curfew is a factor.

@josemorgado@sportsbots.xyz
Murray takes the 2nd set with a great tiebreak, 6-7(3), 7-6(2) vs. Tsitsipas, which means this match won't likely finish today before curfew (11pm).

Tsitsipas lost a set where he hit 24 winners and 12 unforced errors.

Murray hit 2 unforced errors in 65 minutes.

Peak.

The thing about Rafa, Novak, Roger, Stan and Andy is that they make every match a misery for you over five sets. They want you in the gutter fighting over a half empty bag of chips and stub of a roll your own. Few seem willing to get their kicks messy, except for Carlos and Holger who really throw themselves into it with gusto.

Short of the power his opponent hasMurray is being very precise and crafty with his shotmaking against Tsitsipas, similar to Djokovic and that is going to wear the Greek down completely if this goes the distance #Wimbledon #Tennis
Stefanos also played a five setter yesterday and is scheduled to play doubles with his brother tomorrow.

Play suspended with Murray leading Tsitsipas 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 6-4.

by ti-amie Murray slid on the grass and seemed to pull a groin muscle before closing out the set.

by patrick The curfew will help Murray rest that injury

by skatingfan I can't remember what thread there was a post about sponsors on Centre Court - just wanted to add a few more:
Polo Ralph Lauren - ball kids, and officials clothing
Evian - water bottles
Barclays - on the chair umpire's chair stand

You beat me to it.
Anything that you pull is not going to heal overnight. As the injury cools down, as you say, it might swell.

I have a new broken record motif: "Grass has become the most dangerous of surfaces". We are seeing a lot of players being wrong footed and stumbling for bad falls. Much worse than clay.

You clearly did not watch his match with Nadal at Wimbledon last year. Fritz clearly lacks toughness in slams, and he is not a slam-winner caliber but he definitely has the game to do much better at slams than he has.

That's exactly what I mean. He can play a fantastic match from time to time (many can), but can't bring his best at Slams regularly.

by nelslus *MAN. We didn't see much of the Sloane/Donna match. Sloane had a break point to go up double break- which at that point would have had Sloane at 6-4, 4-0. That's where we started watching via Tennis Channel's rebroadcast. Sloane DID get to 6-4, 5-2, and multiple times in the next two games, was two points away from winning. Vekic did not at all look like she felt confident enough to come back. Until Sloane started getting too careful/tentative, started hitting especially bad errors, and just was not moving her feet enough. Of course, Donna's game then did improve dramatically- some great drop shots helped Donna get back on track. Even knowing the history of these two players- it is still pretty shocking to watch the collapse of Sloane. I'd actually like to think that this loss will really, REALLY burn for Sloane. But, it's hard to know.

*We did get to watch some of the last few games re: Rybakina's win today against Cornet- including what looked like a horrible injury moment for Cornet- including Rybakina quickly crossing over to check in on Cornet. And, at this point, I must draw a direct parallel to the discussion today concerning Krejčíková. Look- I actually have always really liked Cornet's game, and very much respect her achievements. So, I'd like to give Cornet the benefit of the doubt concerning what took place. And, genuinely- this did look scary, and I'm sure Cornet felt some significant pain. But, I've been to the Cornet Show a few too many times. HERE she is, step right up, ladies and gentlemen, as Our Brave Little French Madame Defarge Fairy Princess, writhing and crying in agony and pain, still has the PLUCK!! to allow herself to get bandaged up like a mummy- and, gasp- she plays on!! Our Darling Little Miracle Future Dancing with Le Stars Winner GETS! to EVERY!! BALL!!!!, slicing and dicing and tootling her magic dust, to temporarily make Rybakina forget how to play tennis.

FORTUNATELY, in this case, Rybankina played enough solid shots to get out of this Un Vrai Foutoir with a straight sets win. AND, I also get that these scenarios could be particularly fraught for Cornet, since she's talked about retirement a few times, until she then talks about playing on. STILL- again- PERHAPS I am questioning some of Cornet's histrionics today....and, I just don't enjoy the especially dramatic players. :gorgeous: :gorgeous:

by ashkor87 Vondrousova beating Kudermetova was a real surprise for me - V is much more of a clay courter and K had been in good form on grass..3 ans 3, pretty handily beaten..

I hate the excessive "home cooking" - trying to maximize the chances of the home player at the expense of an opponent. In this particular instance - scheduling Murray match at the very late hour with this artificial "curfew" predetermined. This match was destined to be postponed. Playing a match as a 2 separate parts benefits player who is less fit - and this is obviously Murray.
About the "curfew" itself. If those "local home owners" can't be bothered with tennis in the late hours - maybe they do not deserve to hold such global event?

by JTContinental Kudermetova has been in a downward spiral for a long stretch now

Didn't she do well at Berlin and s'hertogenboch? Both on grass? Maybe she doesn't match up well against Vondrousova- lost to her on hard too..

by JTContinental She did do well on grass and at the beginning of the year, but had a long stretch of bad losses in between. Maybe she was nursing an injury or something and is on the way back up again.

We'll see what happens when the match resumes, but I think it would have been better for Murray if he had been able to finish the match yesterday. Tsitsipas was a bit shaky in the 3rd set, and Murray had gained the edge, and momentum in the match.
