by meganfernandez is there any way Siegemund troubles Gauff? She might be in form after 3 qualifying wins, and as a veteran shouldn't be rattled by the home crowd for Gauff. Gauff could have first-match and holy-sh*t-the-hype jitters. Siegemund won their only meeting, 3 years ago. Maybe she does something shady to get under Gauff's skin. Can she make it interesting?

Also:
Raonic over Tsitsipas
Kostyuk over Rybakina

by ponchi101 I think that Coco is already past the stage where jitters can be a factor. She has played two good tournaments and after taking down Iga, she should be a stronger player.
Raonic has a chance, I agree.
Kostyuk vs Rybakina = no chance.
Kostyuk vs Rybakina + one bum shoulder = Elena better watch out.

Veteran players have talked about first-match nerves at Slams. It's pretty common. And opening the night session, on Ashe, with all the hype... it's not a normal match. Pegula said Coco loves to play in front of a big crowd, so that will help.

It will probably be straight sets, but I don't think it will be a steamroll. At least one tight set, some nervy moments.

At 5'6, though, does Siegemund have any serve to speak of?

by ashkor87 I don't expect Coco to have any trouble..Rybakina yes, Kostyuk is a very fine player, potential Tier 1..Raonic will win I am confident...
Sloane will likely lose..she was very passive against Sorribes Tormo...

by ponchi101 Sakkari out to Masarova. That girl has totally forgotten how to play this game.

That quarter is so soft. Rybankina's, I think. Muchova, Azarenka or Bencic should come out of it and make the semis. Going with Bencic. Would play the winner of Iga's quarter in the semis.

And Swiatek opens with a NY boiled bagel. What a statement.

I watched a little bit. 'Twas- as one would suspect- sad.

by nelslus ....Speaking of sad- Bubbles (AKA Dirty Socks) vs. Thiem. Thiem's first singles Slam match win for almost 3 years. Truly a crap effort from Bublik (don't know what his health status is?!?). But- nice for Thiem to get an easy win for once.

by jazzyg Bublik had 17 double faults and six aces.

Have not seen numbers like that since Sabalenka's yips, with the possible exception of Giorgi on the days when she is particularly uninterested in being on the court.

by jazzyg Marozsan served for the match in the third set against Gasquet, got broken and ended up losing it in a tiebreak.

He served for the match in the fourth set, got broken and ended up getting smoked in a tiebreak.

Finally, Gasquet's old legs gave out and Marozsan did not have to serve for the fifth set. He broke to win it 6-2, taking the final four games.

by skatingfan JM Cerundolo completes the first 0-2 comeback of the tournament over Ivashka.

by nelslus AND Rune is out in 4. Rune was struggling physically today- commentators stated he got some kind of treatment today. He just had nothing today.

by ponchi101 Has to give Coco a call:
"Hi Coco"
"Hi Holger. What's up?"
"Not much. Vacationing. Listen, one question"
"Sure".
"I see that you have been doing much better since you left Patrick, and I was wondering if..."
"Wonder no more, dude!"

The comms said that he hasn't played in the humidity of NYC and that that could have been affecting him too. He was whining about being put on Court 5 where a lot of people went to see him.

AND a bum back, I believe. I suspect that he shouldn't have played. Rest up and get healthy.

AND Kudermatova. Shocking- I tell you- shocking. :gorgeous:

by ti-amie I think it's time for Sakkari to take a break from the tour. She's spiraling.

by nelslus AND Hadid Maia takes out Sloane, 6-4 in the third. Obviously- this sucks for Sloane. But, talk about horrible luck for a 1st round match.

by nelslus WELL- Rybanina's shoulder sure looked just fine today. She beat the snot out of Kostyuk, 6-2, 6-1. Very, very big hitting.

by skatingfan Didn't notice until now that X. Wang was playing back to back matches on Court 14.

by JTContinental Marton Fucsovics's grunt is...gross. Perhaps he should be wearing a diaper oncourt?

She won both matches, too!

He is giving new meaning to the term "deuce court" :gorgeous:

by jazzyg The two matches I expected to go the distance and to be the most compelling today did indeed go the maximum number of set, but the disparity in quality was huge.

The Haddad-Maia-Stephens match was first-rate ball striking with some outstanding volleying at times by H-M. Ultimately, the difference in a close outcome was one player competes like a demon and the other player is Sloane Stephens.

The Korda-Fucsovics match was poor quality, with routine errors the norm from both guys. I kind of expected Korda to lose because that's what he's been doing most of the year, and he did.

by JTContinental First bark from Siegemund at 1-2 came perilously close to being a hindrance. She also has three racquets lined up at the back of the court that she is switching out between games.

I think not being on a show court probably contributed, though he said it didn't. Tough being the Saint.

by JTContinental The crowd is getting sick of Siegemund's BS, and is starting to turn on her

by ashkor87 I expect Coco will wriggle out..she is too good to go out in the first round. Not surprised at Sakkari, nothing surprises me about her! Meanwhile Rybakina rolled along, like the Rolls she is..

At least it wasn't at the same time..I look forward to the day they play each other, with an umpire who cannot pronounce Chinese names!

by JTContinental Caro rocking a catsuit

by JTContinental Siegemund finally called for a time violation at 0-2 30-all in the third set, after letting the clock run out on literally every point in the match so far.

I’m not sure itMa that bad. She is still 13 in the race and has some great results this year. Just patchy. Not good at Slams. I don’t think she will make the WTA finals, but should finish top 20.

JTContinental wrote:Sakkari did say post-match that she’s thinking of taking a break but I don’t know how serious she was
That’s weird. She just made the DC final, plus a couple 1000 semis this year, a couple other 500 and 250 finals. Maybe she means short break before fall, or just pack it in for the year since she isn’t going to make the WTA finals.

by meganfernandez This makes me feel differently about last night's Coco-Siegemund match

meganfernandez wrote: Tue Aug 29, 2023 4:09 pm This makes me feel differently about last night's Coco-Siegemund match

I'm not.

I mean, Siegemund Expert Completist JTContinental has correctly been providing us with many examples of, at least arguably, Siegemunds's many examples of poor sportsmanship during matches. YET again, during this match, she stalled so many times before Coco served, stalled so many times while serving, took her inevitable extended "bathroom break" after the third set, she so often barked loudly when Coco made errors....Granted, she is obviously far from alone with these tricks. But, truly, IMO she does consistently, match after match, look for any cheap mind-games advantages. I do think the umpire waited too long to call her on it with this match. I also get how often umpires are put in difficult, awkward, and can't-win-no-matter-what-you-do situations.

Look- did the crowd go too far here? Yes. Did Coco (*albeit IMO very justifiably) end up stirring the crowd into going after her even more after Coco had a lengthy discussion with the umpire? Yes. Do I like to see any player brought to tears? No. IS she anywhere near Krygios-problematic level? Of course not. But, she IMO also has gotten away with too much crap during matches. I respect her talent for sure, and she could otherwise be an off-court terrific person. But, I'm also not going to change my feelings about situations based on a person's bound-to-be self-serving comments. I am sure she's heard the complaints before. She didn't show any real insight into why she was getting booed. She has had to have heard complaints about her actions during matches before- including in match write-ups. Her crap- and other players' crap has been allowed to go on for too long. If she and others get away with their crap- well, hey, you're being given invitations to keep going. But- she chooses to play the way she does- don't complain when a crowd turns on you. You reap what you sow and all that.
