MATCH PREVIEW
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S LUCKY LOSER SIGN-INS CLOSE AT 10:30 AM
SIGN-INS LOCATED IN THE REFEREE'S OFFICE

by meganfernandez Fernandez-Alexandrova is a good match. Rough draw for both. Feels like a R4 matchup. Alexandrova takes the first set in a TB. Leylah had too many UFEs.

Jabeur is sick. Looks like Sampras in the Corretja match. But she won the first set vs Osorio. Not sure she will finish. Ruusuvuori withdrew due to illness, too.

by nelslus How DARE Noskova do that to The Brengle?!?! She is never to be forgiven. :gorgeous:

We spoke too soon. :) She came back from 1-3 down in the second to win the match in a TB. Lovely warm embrace with Osario at the net. How kind of Maria Camila.

by swaydrian+ Pretty amazing showing by Medvedev. 1 1 0. Expected, but great for my fantasy points :D.

I'm going to be in Arthur Ashe on Saturday night. Can't wait to see who I get dealt!!

....And, DAMN, so close to me, yet again, being able to refer to you as Ms. Suliso.

But, the Tennis Gods decided to smile on Jabeur, at least for one more day....

by nelslus ....AND, my Alexandrova Snark shall have to wait for another day. :gorgeous:

I keep hoping that Leylah will find ways to at least go deep in singles Slams. Hope she and Taylor can win the doubles.

I figured that this would be an excellent opportunity for a win for Mmoh. But- I sure didn't see 2, 4 & 2 decimation coming. From what I saw of this match- Khachanov just played terribly. Frankly, with fewer errors, that last set easily could have easily been a love or 5-1 set for Mmoh. Mmoh pretty much just had to show up today.

Proof, yet again, that, unless you're Ajla Tomljanović, you just can't expect to waltz in to a Slam be able to do anything, with little or no match play prior to the Slam. (I can't imagine that Khachanov had any true expectations of doing well today.)

AND- I swear, Mmoh has got to be the luckiest unlucky player on the tours. His injuries stopped his momentum. But then, he gets these Slam Lucky Loser slots, and a US Open Wildcard, and wins matches. Very happy for Mmoh. :yahoo:

by swaydrian+ What the hell is happening to Caroline Garcia??

by nelslus AND, I swear, Chicago, baby nelslus and me are good luck for players who come to Chicago. Emma, Ben Shelton, and now Alex Michelsen. Alex was down a break in the third set- and I think he might also have been down a break in the first set? Such a mature performance.

....Caroline should take the much needed break with Sakkari and Kudermetova. Get it together- although, I have more confidence in Sakkari getting her Slam game together. Sad to see such talented players fade out.

Such poor performances at majors for Caroline this year. I guess she did well in other tourneys I didn't watch. I thought she might have been figuring something out after Cleveland, but that's why I'm out of the women's side of the suicide pool. Not looking too great for me and Kokkinakis on the men's side. I suppose this will give me more time to enjoy the open while there, haha

WELL, my first male pick was Gasquet so....basically, IMO, especially if you're trying to win one of these Pools- you're pretty much forced into making "bad" choices. It's always strangely far easier to lose in these things. (I'm still alive in the women's Pool, thanks to Tennis Immortals Cirstea and Bouzkova- either of whom could also mess me up by winning "too many" matches....)

I'll be at the Open watching matches from next Wednesday through Saturday. My first time on a plane since COVID. I love this tournament- albeit, I'm pretty geeked to be at any tennis tournament. You are guaranteed to have a great time. Labor Day weekend is a blast at the Open.

There is this list of players that seem to be in real trouble. Sakkari, Kudermetova, Felix and Garcia. Felix has fallen so much his loss was not even mentioned here (sure, McKinsey if a fine player and that was a bad draw, but still).
And I say that these are data to the fact that indeed, some people can forget how to hit some strokes. Garcia is there. Nothing is working, and they showed a little bit, but it can be that she really cannot hit a ball at top 20 level anymore.

Felix HAS had some injury issues. Nevertheless- indeed, it is sad that none of us even thought to include him in the imminent ever growing Anisimova Back to School list.

Oh, heck, obviously V has earned the right to do whatever the heck she wants to do. She's had a few good wins this year, and all that. Not at all sure how she will process this. NOT fun.

by nelslus Meanwhile, BTW, Huesler had served for the match for what would have been a straight set victory at 5-4. Broke himself at love. Managed to get it to a third set tiebreaker- during which he did not win a point. Huesler is now a break down in the 4th set. Cue inevitable conclusion.

I agree she's earned the right to play as long as she wants to but she's only had 3 wins this year over Kudermetova, Giorgi, and Volynets, and she hasn't one consecutive matches since Cincinnati in 2019.

LOL, in a masochistic way, a part of me had wished that she had signed up for the mixed. NOT that it would have been- ahem- likely that she'd win a match in that draw, either.

Once upon time FAA, Shapovalov, Musetti and Sinner were all grouped together as future stars. Right now it looks like only Jannik will make it.

Serious question here.
We agree with have no say on when a player should retire, or what they do with their lives. But, do the other players have a say? Because Venus was there thanks to a WC, meaning that in some parallel universe, some other person received her $80K paycheck.
It was not that she lost; her quality of play was a ghost of what she was in years past. So, if you qualify (like Minnen), go for it. But if you are only there for what you were a long time ago, then maybe the other players might look at it in a different light.

Other players have no say. :) If they did, they would have ganged up on the Big 3 to retire 5 years ago.

Wild cards are a business tool for tournaments, agencies, and federations to use to their advantage, and the market decides who gets them. They suck but many times the fans get what they want. If the other players want in, win like Venus did 20 years ago.

Theoretically, Nao Hibino would have gotten Venus's spot in a no-wild-card world. Hibino was the No. 1 seed in qualifying. She lost her first round. She had a chance. She also could have won a few more matches earlier in the year and made the MD cutoff.

I see your point and it's empathetic. But nah. Believe it or not, a lot of people like seeing Venus play (ideally better than she did Monday), and she generates press for the sport and tournament. She beat a Top 15 player a few weeks ago. I think she'll get WCs at the US Open and Wimbledon as long as she wants.

I did kind of wonder if Pat Rafter would be given a US Open wild card. He won it twice, too.

by ponchi101 How about a WC into the qualies? A bit more fair?
And the players' associations could have a say: NO WC's for players ranked below a certain cutoff point. Because, as I said, then somebody gets taken out of $82K.

by Suliso Most great players don't find it fun to play THIS far past their prime level. Clearly Venus is a rare exception.

Obvious only in a hindsight. Albeit Sinner and Alcaraz were the leaders of the group via a statistical approach (age, ranking and junior accomplishments).

She wouldn't take a qualies wild card. I don't think tournaments should have to acquiesce to the players council for WCs. It's a marketing tool. There probably are some rules for WCs, right? Like you need to have been active within a certain time or achieved a certain ranking at some point? They can't give one to a celebrity, for instance, just to see what would happen.

I see where you're coming from, but any rule like that would be arbitrary and would also bite up-and-coming players who don't have a high ranking. This isn't the problematic part of wild cards to me. All of them take money out of a higher-ranked player's pocket, and allowing a fan favorite in is more justifiable (because it's for fans) than swapping them between Slam host countries.

I totally would stop this giving out automatic US/Aussie/Roland Garros/Wimbledon WC's nonsense. While these WC's have been hugely important for some of my favorite players from these countries- it's hugely archaic, unfair, and pure entitlement. AND- get rid of WC's due to players with powerful PR teams, family ties, etc. WC's go to the "Next-In" top ranked players on the lists. Merit based only. I hate how all of this could have hurt the careers of players from other countries.

AS for V- i do think that, once you've achieved such a level of greatness- true HOF careers- you get a lifetime supply of WC's (AND Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat  ). If- AND PLEASE, WORLD, DON'T LET THE FOLLOWING EVER HAPPEN!!!!- Roger at 48 decided he wanted to play on the tour again and lose to Van Assche in 1R at Wimbledon- then, so be it. Make it rain, Roger.

Mind you- I do wish that V had been fare more graceful and bowed out of this tournament. Forgetting for the moment her age- she's clearly nowhere near 100% physically/health-wise, and should have let another player have a chance at the opportunity and $'s.

I'm definitely not saying I'm right here- and, it could be decided to limit the time period for when former HOF players get WC's.

OH, and btw- fellow geezers- it IS Day 3 of this Open. Perhaps it's time to head over there. :gorgeous:

by ti-amie Venus loss upset me. As has been said it's how she lost not that she lost. I understand that she feels the late diagnosis of her auto-immune disease did rob her of chances to achieve more glory but sadly it may be time for her to have a serious talk with herself about where she's going with her career.

I agree the "WC's for life" for Slam winners should be looked at again. I'm sure Raducanu will be using them to play higher than her ranking next year. Just think Vondrousova will now be in the same position going forward.

Two good weeks at ANY slam would guarantee you a $240K income for ten years, in Emma's case. Even if the best she does from now on is attending the Met Gala.
That's a good deal.

No WCs for life for anyone. But V is an active player, just beat a Top 15 player and is a huge fan favorite who’s life was just made into an Oscar-winning movie. I think her home Slam can justify the WC. She transcends tennis.

I’ll say what I did on Twitter - she stands for doing what you love beyond the age when you shouldn’t be able to, and competing fairly and fully even if you might fall on your face, then holding your head high. That’s what Venus stands for now and I think it is worthy of attention. The sports stage usually gives us a lot less than that.

I’m not a Venus super fan. I don’t watch her anymore. But I don’t think the WC was out of place. And they can’t go on forever.
