The draw on the ATP site has been updated showing Wawrinka vs Thiem who qualified in so I guess Arnaldi did withdraw.
by ashkor87 Historically a fast court..hard to see beyond Djokovic and Alcaraz, both rested and motivated.,.if injury derails them, opportunity for Sinner and Medvedev I guess ..
by meganfernandez Davidovich Fokina has won 12 of 13 points to start second set vs Shelton after winning the first in a TB.
Do I know why? I do not. But ADF is passing Shelton at the net at will. Shelton isn’t closing and isn’t being aggressive with volleys at all. Basically feeding the ball back to ADF at times.
by ashkor87 Where to hit the volley to be effective, is one of the things one learns as one matures,...for now, let us be happy he is even trying?

For sure. He has a lot of potential for improvement. He definitely should be coming in. Love to see it.

by ponchi101 Is there a coach left that can teach a young player how to really volley?
Mac could never teach anybody; his volleys were instinctive. Edberg does not coach anymore, Pete has never and never will, the old Aussies (Roche) will not coach anymore.
Who can teach the stroke anymore?

I don't think so. But yes, he had the stroke.
Of course, if somebody were to really want to learn the stroke, s/he would crawl to Martina's door. But I don't know if she would be willing, giving the recent health issues.
by meganfernandez Dimitrov blew a few match points in the 3rd set vs Medvedev but then dominated the tiebreak. Medvedev was aggravated and throwing his racket and griping to the chair nonstop in French on changeovers. (He apologized to Grigor at the net for his attitude, and Grigor waved it off as no big deal. But then he flipped off the crowd for booing him.) Dimitrov had this amazing point toward the tend... first point of the highlights.

He is, good point. But I still kind of like his abrasiveness. Tour needs some of it.
by meganfernandez Sinner withdrew due to awful scheduling. He finished his match at 2:30 am and was scheduled to play 14 hours later. Why in the world did hte tournament shoot itself in the foot? I know scheduling is tough and there's only so much elasticity in the day, but still, he should get the last match on the next day.
by texasniteowl On the one hand, ouch. That is rough. And they should have given him the last match. I wondered about the scheduling when I checked scores around 7p.m. last night and realized play was still going!
On the other hand...he had a 1st round bye, so has only played the one match. And while it is few and far between, 14 hours is more time than you get if weather pushes matches so far back that you have to play twice in the same day. No, poor tournament scheduling isn't the same, but?
Let's say he got the 7:30 spot instead of 4:30 spot...is there that big a difference between 14 hours and 17 hours? I know they have routines, recovery, sleep, etc. but how much difference would the 3 hours make?
by ptmcmahon The other "reason" to maybe not put him in the last match again is to avoid back to back late finishes. Although I'm guessing they weren't thinking of that.

There's an even later match, the one Rune and Altmaier are playing tonight. Both Rune and Djokovic played earlier than Sinner yesterday and were scheduled later than him today, presumably to give marquee billing to Djokovic and the defending champ, but Sinner should have had the late match. He's ranked higher than Rune and has had a better season, so he's worthy of the night session. Five more hours would have made a decent difference.
by meganfernandez Griekspoor was a tough out to Djokovic, 6-4 in the third. He was down a break 2-4 and got it back to 4-4. But couldn't hold on. He started the year ranked No. 95, won a title in the first week, and is wrapping it up as No. 23. Probably one of the big Top 100 movers this year, along with Shelton, Jarry, Umbert, Fils, and Eubanks.

by ashkor87 Sinner refused to play his next match after his match ended at 4 am or some such ungodly hour. Good for him! More players need to stand up the crass, greedy, unfeeling creatures who run tournaments.
by ponchi101 What is the solution? Because in tennis, you don't know how long will the match before yours last. 1 hour, straight win for somebody, or 3:30 for two other people.
This is not the NBA or the NFL, with a clock game. In tennis, you walk out there not knowing how long it will take. And hard to change that unless we go to no-ad scoring (and we know how that goes).
by Fastbackss They could have put him as the late match again. I haven't seen a good reason published yet as to why they couldn't.

the solution is obvious - dont start matches after a certain time - push them to the next day.
by Fastbackss Or as Brad Gilbert said, move to another court (that was open).
I can't find it now but Stan wawrinka offered a similar complaint although it was singles to doubles

At some point, the player would havre to pay twice a day to catch up, then, once a one-week event gets to the point where they play every day. Late the next day is the best they can do and still have the final on Sunday.
Thyey should have put Sinner last on Cneter or the other court. They loaded up Center with 6 matches and only had 4 on the smaller court,

Monte Carlo is a tournament that Djokovic plays most years, but he hasn't had much success in recent years.
by ponchi101 Notice how when we always talk about these three monsters, we are immediately skewed to an extreme.
NOT MUCH SUCCESS (in recent years). For a man that has won it twice. That's how good he is.

Yes, the standards they set for themselves (and future players) is preposterous. And yet Djokovic continues to exceed them.
