It's not like the tournament organizers are that interested in the well being of the players, so I don't see why the players should be that interested in the well being of the tournaments.

I think it's still Fritz.

Fritz is US #1 right now, but the top 4 are all grouped together between 12th & 15th.

If you want to go that way, how about who was the best American player on Saturday? Do you think you can have a new best American player on Thursday? Do we go with a system in which we play hot potato? As in: if you are #50 but you beat the #1 player from anywhere, you get his ranking.
You don't like rankings; you have made that clear. But if we don't have them, and they are meaningless, then it becomes a game of preferences. I really like Paul and Korda, but their numbers are not what Fritz' are. So, I just can't say that they are better.

It's not just rankings right now. It's also career high ranking, age, best career results, best wins over even better players + surface factors. All that together makes me say Fritz is still the best.

Of course these things are not forever. If one of the others has amazing results for the next 4 months we'll need to rethink.
