Remains to be seen whether Carlos can win in four. 50/50 I'd say.

Not in 4. Will have to be in 5.
Lovely match. Some very good rallies.

Rune is out.
If only he would have a renowned coach with tons of experience that had been in considerable occasions in tough matches.

Fritz almost had one of the most embarrassing, pathetic losses of his career, but he rallied from 5-2 and two breaks down in the fourth-set tiebreak to force a fifth set against the overrated Mpetshi Perricard before the match was suspended overnight.

Consider: in 23 service games before the tiebreaks in each set, Fritz lost a total of 15 points out of 107 because Perricard is maybe the most inept returner in the history of tennis, at least in this early stage of his career. But in the three tiebreaks, Fritz lost nine service points out of 23. Insane choking, although I confess I have not seen a point in this match.

Contrary to popular opinion, Perricard is not good on grass, with the weird exception of his ability to win at Wimbledon. He lost in qualifying at Roehampton last year before getting in as a lucky loser and reaching the fourth round. He went 1-3 in the lead-up tournaments this year and had his serve broken a fair amount of times.

Fritz absolutely, positively has to win this match. Medvedev is gone from his section, and Zverev may be in trouble as well. He simply cannot waste this opportunity against a one-dimensional serve-bot.

The two lowest ranked players in the field played each other in the first round, and Great Britain's 719th-ranked Tarvet beat Switzerland's 506yh-ranked Riedi. Tarvet has to be the lowest ranked player not coming back from injury or retirement ever to win a slam match.

And the third-lowest ranked player, Great Britain's Fery at No. 465, knocked plenty of us out of the survivor pool by beating Popyrin. Wild day.

Somebody has to explain to him that if you don't get the return IN, the point is over in favor of your opponent.
But I still disagree that he is a serve-bot. He has hit plenty of winners from both wings today.
But he will lose in the fifth tomorrow (I did not dump him from my GA team, which spells certain doom).

Fair enough. Since I did not see the first four sets, I can't disagree with your assessment. I will say I once saw Isner beat Federer on clay in Switzerland in a Davis Cup match when Isner was hitting one winner after the other off the ground, which definitely was not his norm. And Perricard's backhand was really bad in the lead-up tournaments. Maybe today, though, it was just his return of serve that was the problem.

After his loss to Jarry, Holger Rune says he would beat him 9 out of 10 times in normal conditions:

"In normal conditions, I'd beat him 9 times out of 10, with all due respect to Nicolás Jarry. Obviously, I didn't have it easy today with my knee, but yes, it wasn't a great match."
