by Oploskoffie Sad start to the day with Ons Jabeur forced to retire from her match against Tomova

by Oploskoffie Arthur Fery is having a very good day so fay. 41 Popyrin SP pickers may be getting a little worried... :o

by ashkor87 Osta was a strange match..dhe hasn't been in form but Kartal. ,?!

by Suliso Medvedev losing is a small surprise as well.

by texasniteowl didn't see Medvedev...didn't expect him to lose day 1...to Bonzi...any input on what happened?

by Oploskoffie Next to retire from a match is Tsitsipas. No idea why just yet.

From what I've read, he simply got outplayed, with Bonzi doing really well on serve. No idea if the temperature was a factor, though. There's bound to be those that handle it better than others.

by ashkor87 tsitsipas pulled a badosa..

Indeed. I wonder if the odd strokes are finally catching up with him. By that I mean, the shots are so quirky that any little variation may send them out.
And he did well two weeks ago. Odd indeed (a little).

Yes, i watched the entire match ..this assesment is correct. medvedev didn't play well enough, bonzi did..won a couple of crucial points by exploiting Med's position too far, and Med couldn't pass him when he came to the net.

by ponchi101 Txs for that.
Those "receiving form the parking lot" positions are too extreme. I know he is not the only one, and Rafa ran a great career doing it, but you start from too far back. On courts with such a low bounce, it must be tough.

by ashkor87 I fear for Alcaraz now...too many unforced errors, and Fognini is a very good player!

by ashkor87 Alcaraz looks low-energy....

by ponchi101 He will pull it through. It is Fabio, and by now, he must be satisfied with the price money and the fact that he has played well.
One of the top under achievers in the history of the game. He is folding now.

by skatingfan

by Suliso Remains to be seen whether Carlos can win in four. 50/50 I'd say.

by ponchi101 Not in 4. Will have to be in 5.
Lovely match. Some very good rallies.

by ponchi101 Rune is out.
If only he would have a renowned coach with tons of experience that had been in considerable occasions in tough matches.

by jazzyg Fritz almost had one of the most embarrassing, pathetic losses of his career, but he rallied from 5-2 and two breaks down in the fourth-set tiebreak to force a fifth set against the overrated Mpetshi Perricard before the match was suspended overnight.

Consider: in 23 service games before the tiebreaks in each set, Fritz lost a total of 15 points out of 107 because Perricard is maybe the most inept returner in the history of tennis, at least in this early stage of his career. But in the three tiebreaks, Fritz lost nine service points out of 23. Insane choking, although I confess I have not seen a point in this match.

Contrary to popular opinion, Perricard is not good on grass, with the weird exception of his ability to win at Wimbledon. He lost in qualifying at Roehampton last year before getting in as a lucky loser and reaching the fourth round. He went 1-3 in the lead-up tournaments this year and had his serve broken a fair amount of times.

Fritz absolutely, positively has to win this match. Medvedev is gone from his section, and Zverev may be in trouble as well. He simply cannot waste this opportunity against a one-dimensional serve-bot.

by jazzyg The two lowest ranked players in the field played each other in the first round, and Great Britain's 719th-ranked Tarvet beat Switzerland's 506yh-ranked Riedi. Tarvet has to be the lowest ranked player not coming back from injury or retirement ever to win a slam match.

And the third-lowest ranked player, Great Britain's Fery at No. 465, knocked plenty of us out of the survivor pool by beating Popyrin. Wild day.

...
Somebody has to explain to him that if you don't get the return IN, the point is over in favor of your opponent.
But I still disagree that he is a serve-bot. He has hit plenty of winners from both wings today.
But he will lose in the fifth tomorrow (I did not dump him from my GA team, which spells certain doom).

by jazzyg Fair enough. Since I did not see the first four sets, I can't disagree with your assessment. I will say I once saw Isner beat Federer on clay in Switzerland in a Davis Cup match when Isner was hitting one winner after the other off the ground, which definitely was not his norm. And Perricard's backhand was really bad in the lead-up tournaments. Maybe today, though, it was just his return of serve that was the problem.

After his loss to Jarry, Holger Rune says he would beat him 9 out of 10 times in normal conditions:

"In normal conditions, I'd beat him 9 times out of 10, with all due respect to Nicolás Jarry. Obviously, I didn't have it easy today with my knee, but yes, it wasn't a great match."

by ashkor87 Really impressive wins on day 1- Anisimova won 0 and 0..very hard to do on grass, Vondrousova over Kessler -who is a very good player and in form ..

by skatingfan Taylor Fritz's girlfriend Morgan Riddle

by ponchi101 Perricard's record. With basically the same racquet that Roddick used.

by JTContinental He also hit one at 151 mph

I hadn't seen much of Mpetshi Perricard's game until yesterday and was left somewhat bewildered at the mix of some nonchalant brilliant shots and (way too many) absolutely dreadful misses. As one of the commentators said at some point "Any half-decent professional player shouldn't hit it THAT far wide...".

by ponchi101 Indeed. He is spectacular both ways. Some because of the brilliance of the shot, some because of the awfulness.
He is the direct heir to Laconte.

I wonder if they remember Gonzo. Some of the most spectacular misses in the history of the game.

I wonder what Badosa and Tsitsipas do that their bodies break down so easily.
Nah, I know.

by Suliso They might be doing something most others are not, right? :D
