MEN'S AND WOMEN'S LUCKY LOSER SIGN-INS CLOSE AT 10:30 AM
SIGN-INS LOCATED IN THE REFEREE'S OFFICE

by Suliso Too early for Mboko. Out in R1.

by martini4me Yep, very tough draw. Drew the most dangerous floater, in all likelihood. I only started watching at the beginning of the second set, but from what I’ve seen/heard so far, her wrist (from when she fell at the very end of the Montreal semi-final) has been a problem.

Weird moment early in the set. There was a full two minute delay, while Krejcikova, plus Mboko and the chair umpire, searched all over for a dampener that Krejcikova had lost on a big misfit of an overhead. They looked under the player’s chair, had to move the big metal cooler, umpire was on her hands and knees looking, before she finally found it.

by Owendonovan Keys steals the first set 7-6 after 34 UFE's and 5 DF's saving 5 set points.

by Suliso Bold prediction - Keys will not win another large tournament. She has achieved her dream of winning a GS and that is enough for her.

by JTContinental Rough day at the office for Keys so far, so has made a Sabalenka-like 85 UFEs so far in this match

by Suliso Out goes Keys with 14 double faults. Sooner than I expected.

by JTContinental Clervie Ngounoue takes the 2nd set against Kalinskaya. She would be a force on the tour if she didn't try to hit a winner with every shot.

by texasniteowl 89 unforced errors.

89.

I'm so happy Maddie finally won a slam and things came together for her at the Aussie, but this is an example of why it's hard to see her winning another.

Agree with both. She has got to be one of the less driven players ever, and, with her amount of talent, a total underachiever.
Imagine her game with Paolini's drive.
Other than she is a very nice person, she is the Kyrgios of the WTA. Sure, a slam winner, but she should be a constant force in the tour.

Mboko didn't pick up a racket for a week after the win. Between the celebration, the wrist, the hype, and the draw, it was a tall ask to win a round. Krejcikova was good, too.

Not that bold. I agree. Too much muscle memory to reprogram. She gets tight. I don't know if she is complacent or not.

Victoria seemed heavily hampered by her taped-up wrist today. Barbora comes through the rough 1st round draw to face Uchijima next.

The wrist was very heavily taped.

by skatingfan I was worried about the wrist for Mboko, and also very surprised by the number of members of tennis media that were asking whether she could win the tournament, and/or were predicting at least semifinal run.

by FredX I think I've run out of patience with these Venus Williams wildcards...when she loses tonight, this is it, right? Enough is enough?

I think that happened because she finished with a win in Canada so no one thought about the wrist. The camera people focused in on the wrist several times during the match. I think if it wasn't the Open she would've (should've?) skipped this event.

by ti-amie Madison Keys crashed out to Renata Zarazua 7-6(10), 6-7(3),5-7 and now Svitolina is holding on by the skin of her teeth down 2-6, 1-5 to Anna Bondar.

by jazzyg Venus is playing pretty darn well.

The embarrassment was Kvitova. She screwed another player out of the tournament by playing when she was not remotely ready or in shape to play her final match.

I just saw that she won the second set 6-2.

Kvitova did a Clijsters...

I just feel she got her lifetime achievement wildcard already two years ago, but yeah, that was actually pretty impressive.

by Suliso Seems like nothing is wrong with Andreeva. Handing out some bakery products...

Hype is their oxygen. Let's be honest, we need some hype for energy. Sports fans are obsessed with racing ahead to see who's next, predict outcomes, etc.

In this case, Mboko said she had an MRI the morning of the Canada final and it didn't show anything broken or dislocated. Nothing to keep her from playing the final. It must have gotten worse afterward, and people didn't know because she's been off the court.

If Muchova could have made her go forward and backward more, I think it would have been an easier win. Venus's power and serve are still there, and the hunger and will, but she just can't move very well.

by news727 As of 10:43pm ET, Opelka/Alcaraz is the only match remaining.

Another finish after midnight in any case.

by news727 Update: Well, not really. The match finished when the clock striked 12.

6-4, 7-5, 6-4. 2 seed advances to round 2.

yes, administereda proper thrashing to Parks. Andreeva played really well.
