by Oploskoffie Just read this article about Boulter narrowly missing out on direct entry and now having to play qualifying:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/articles/c0edz5xny0go

What they don't mention is her (quite) possibly moving into the main draw anyway because of withdrawals. Which could still happen, right? (the BBC has confused me a little here...)

by JTContinental It's less sensationalist to point that out, which would never do for the British press.

If she doesn't get to at least the 3rd round........

by skatingfan

by JTContinental $2.79 million for the winners

by Suliso Anna Kalinskaya has secured the last seeded position and Iva Jovic will be seeded at a GS for the first time.

by Suliso Early prediction - Swiatek has declined a bit and will lose at or before QF's depending on her draw.

by ponchi101 Brave call, especially seeing as the person you are talking about is only 24.
I would love to agree with it, but then I remember WImbledon and, I don't know.

by Suliso Not necessarily permanently, but right now doesn't seem to be a prime AO title candidate. Anyway 70% probability of Sabalenka winning.

by ashkor87 My estimate of Probabilities of win:
Men: Sinner 50%, Alcaraz 45%, Field 5%
Women: Rybakina 35%, Sabalenka 35%, Coco 20%, Field 10%

by ponchi101 Sabalenka 30%
Rybakina 15%
Swiatek 15%
Coco 15%
Field 25%

ATP
Sinner 48%, Alcaraz 48%
Everybody else depends on those two getting injured.

that is a bit too high, in my view.. she is a bit vulnerable on the faster hard courts like AO.

by Suliso I tell you Swiatek for whatever reason is not what she used to be. Bencic also beat her rather easily today.

I give about 50% to Sabalenka, after that difficult to say...

by ponchi101 I agree she is not what she used to be.
And I forgot one player. Amanda. Who is playing well and has the power to go through this.
So I will review:
Sabalenka 30%
Rybakina 10%
Iga 10%
Amanda 10%
Coco 10%
Muchova 5%
Field 25%

by jazzyg Swiatek's performance at Wimbledon was the outlier. Her struggles are the norm.

But to ponch's point, her run at Wimbledon came from nowhere, so although I expect her to lose to Kalinskaya in round 3 (Kalinskaya choked away a golden opportunity to beat her at the US Open), I'm not totally counting her out.

I wrote this before the Eala match

by ponchi101 Will Parks beat Muchova? Don't think so. Can she? It would not be a huge surprise.

by ti-amie Parks showed me something yesterday. Like Baptiste her game is crafty. If Muchova is not injured it will be difficult for her to beat her.

by mmmm8 I like it on its own. I kind of hate it as a walking-onto-court outfit. But hey, it's not boring.

by ashkor87 That was quite a struggle Saba had to go through to beat Potapova..I don't think Saba is playing all that well..of course, nor is Coco.
Osaka has been unconvincing..swiatek and Rybakina have been as expected..Mboko has exceeded expectations thus far.

by ponchi101 Sabalenka's UEs were too many. She was playing one of those matches in which the solution is: hit harder. And it barely worked.

by ti-amie

by dryrunguy And Sorana was angry during the previous match Osaka played, which resulted in a handshake that made the NY Times? This won't help.

by Suliso Anisimova, Pegula or Keys in SF's? The toughest section to decide.

I have Pegula... how is Anisimova playing? I havent really been able to watch any of her matches..

by ponchi101 Anisimova. She is crushing the ball. And so far (two matches I have seen), her attitude is very focused.

by Suliso Anisimova for me as well, but not with a great confidence

by ponchi101 Confidence? Who talked about confidence?
Watch her now go out there and get double bageled again. I mean, YOU and I are picking her. How big can an albatross be? ;)

by jazzyg Pegula for me but I would be surprised by any of the three. Tough call.

ashkor87 wrote: Sat Jan 31, 2026 11:39 am I am amazed rybakina got only 7 votes...what are people thinking ?!
I'd say the voting reflects the results of the pas season in terms of consistency/averages pretty well - though I myself would mildly question Gauff coming in second.

So yeah, Rybakina won the WTA Finals and things were looking up for her, but that's still a different stage than the slams, especially at the end of a long season. If she proves herself to be as consistent "last four material" as Sabalenka, next year's AO poll will probably provide a rather different outcome.

Yes, but I really question what the previous years and consistency has to do with winning the AO.

ashkor87 wrote: Sat Jan 31, 2026 1:47 pm Yes, but I really question what the previous years and consistency has to do with winning the AO.
So...

1. You were, to me anyway, clearly referencing the outcome of the 2026 Aussie Open WTA. Who you got? poll.

2. The outcome of said poll was to see who thought, hopefully beforehand, who would win the AO on the WTA side of things.

3. In case of such a question, factors are usually taken into consideration. Things like recent form, previous results, surface-specific results, consistency.

4. You seemed surprised only seven people, possibly based on the above and/or other factors, selected Rybakina as a possible winner. More than surprised, even.

5. My counter to that was my previous post, which is my take on why Rybakina only got 7 votes. THAT is how it pertains to her winning the AO. But I guess that was far from obvious.

by ashkor87 not really worth arguing about, so I will say no more - just that current form and playing conditions are more imporrtant than last year's consistency and so on, and on those grounds, Rybakina should have been favorite. I did in fact give her 3 votes.
