I find nothing inexplicable about this one given all the Paraguayan Olympians we're all so familiar with. Got way more questions about the 10th or so highest ranked singles player from Australia making the cut. Her name being Sam Stosur doesn't change that she's currently in the neighborhood of 10th ranked and it's not due to injury.

I know that a country can't have more than a certain number of singles players and doubles teams, and that rankings are involved as well, but after that, is is just up to someone to choose fairly randomly? Mohamed Safwat got in for Egypt too and his ranking is 171. Cool for Royg and Safwat, but I'm curious how that happens.

From the ever helpful Wikipedia:

Verónica Cepede Royg secured the outright berth in the women's singles by winning the bronze medal at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, replacing the slot from the U.S. tennis player Caroline Dolehide.

Mohamed Safwat and Mayar Sherif secured an outright berth each in the men's and women's singles, respectively, by winning the gold medal at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

Full qualifying criteria up on Wiki. But again, no idea on how Stosur is in the field.

The others mentioned didn't give me pause. Stosur's participation does.

Stosur got the wildcard that was created for past Grand Slam Champions/Olympic Gold Medalists.

I think Olympic Tennis is when I watch the least amount of tennis with all the other sports going on, most of which I only watch every 4 years.

13 hour time difference between EDT & Tokyo doesn't help either. I will be following the results, but probably won't see many of the matches until the medal rounds. Watched rowing last night & tonight there's more rowing & men's gymnastics, and then swimming in the morning. One of the reasons that I like the Winter Olympics more than the Summer is that it's a lot easier to follow with fewer events & fewer sports.

Doubt it will be possible for me to watch much tennis unless maybe someone from Switzerland gets close to medals.

Leylah played a good 1st set, a mediocre 2nd set, and then dominated Yastremska 6-0 in the 3rd set to win the match. This despite becoming lost while going to the bathroom to change her clothes between the 2nd and 3rd sets, as it is very hot in Tokyo.

Nothing special in singles so far, but a couple of big upsets in doubles. Chan sisters lost and Murray/Salisbury beat Mahut/Herbert.
