by Suliso There is more potential for tomorrow than for today, but still a high chance of boring matches.

by ponchi101 I say Rafa/Zverev will be good. And Ruud/Cilic can be very good, as they have opposing styles.
I am taking Rafa by a hair, and Cilic. His power will get him over Ruud, who plays too far back.

Ruud/Cilic might be good, I just can't make myself care. I'd rather Ruud make the final but I'm not that interested. Been kinda a bummer tournament fo me, just not much excitement.

by ashkor87 yes, generally the tournament is over, so far as I am concerned.. Zverev may push Nadal if he serves as well as he did against Alcaraz.. the serve has been suprisingly importiant in this RG, maybe the court is a bit faster than usual - depends on the weather, I think..

I'm excited about the women's final if it ends up being competitive. But there's a good chance it's very one-sided. And I can't watch it live so the result will probably be spoiled.

I'd watch Zverev-Ruud, going for a first Slam title. I"d probably also watch Rafa a little bit because I do think it's his last tournament.

by ponchi101 Uhm, the match (Rafa/Zverev) is actually pretty even, with some quality rallies. Rafa is staying away from Zverev's BH, Zverev from Rafa's FH.
Neither is serving well.

That passing shot Nadal hit at 4-6 in the first-set breaker.... unreal. This set feels pretty important for Sascha. He had four set point from 6-2 in the TB, right?

Edit: Well, that was outrageously good. Made up for the rest of the tournament being so lackluster for me.

by ponchi101 Rafa steals the 1st set. Yes, Zverev had 4 SP at 6-2 in the TB. Rafa had had several SP's when Zverev was serving at 4-5.
Not the cleanest of sets from either one, but very entertaining.

It will take an epic effort for Zverev to bounce back. But he's experienced enough to know how he has to think right now.

by ponchi101 This is ridiculous. Match time 2:04. Score: 2-2 in the second set.
It can't go on like this much longer, or we end up with a 6 hours match.

Think this favors Zverev? Can Rafa tire?

by ashkor87 Nadal is one of the best volleyers in the game! Showing it here...

by JazzNU Has the temperature swung that wildly from what it's been all tournament in Paris or is the heat and humidity strictly a result of the roof being closed?

He is not looking fresh. And he is the one that is 36. That is 11 years older. It must be a factor.

Yes... how much, we'll find out. I still think I'd take Rafa's heart over Zverev's body in an RG semifinal, with Ruud or Cilic waiting.

Really? I've been entertained, there have been some great matches. Not like all timers, but very entertaining. Have you only been watching matches on Tennis Channel and NBC or have you been watching other courts as well during the two weeks? That could be the difference.

by ponchi101 The tournament has provided for some negative aspects to be discussed. But it seems to me that a lot, and I do mean a lot, of players are correcting the line calls. Good for them.

Rublev gave one to Cilic in the fifth-set tiebreak.

by jazzyg What the heck is going on in this set?

by ponchi101 8 total breaks of serve in the second. Some sort of record for both men. And not done yet.

I have Tennis Channel Plus, NBC and Peacock, so I've been watching favorite players and interesting matchups. But it has fallen flat for me. It's totally personal. Haven't been invested in it very much and been stressed at work so haven't watched as much as I'd like. Kerber was electrifying last week. Happy to see Coco come through and that's a nice surprise, but I haven't seen a full match of hers yet.

Sascha's coming back from the dead... and blowing it again... Honestly I don't know. It's suspenseful!

by jazzyg I once saw Chang and Yzaga play a set at Roland Garros when there was 1 held serve, but it was not in a semi featuring the greatest player in clay ever.

by meganfernandez Oh my god, Sascha fell and is wailing in agony, holding his ankle. He's standing up but it looks like he can't continue and he knows... He can't walk.

This is sooooo awful.

by ponchi101 No. Let's hope this is not how this ends.

ponchi101 wrote: Fri Jun 03, 2022 4:12 pm No. Let's hope this is not how this ends.
Commentator says the replay is so gruesome, they can't show it. Maybe torn ligaments. Now they are showing it with a warning. I covered my eyes.

I really hope Twitter and all the Sascha haters (as justified as they are) don't have a heyday here. This is truly terrible.

by ponchi101 Pico Monaco is describing it as the same injury he had years ago. They are showing the replay here and it is a complete roll-over of the ankle, twice. He rolled over it AND fell on top of it.

by ponchi101 It's over. This is terrible.

by ponchi101 Side story. They just showed Rafa's box. Maribel's look is as if Rafa had been injured.
One can't say much from things like this, but these are good people. It seems, from small details like this, that they are a good family.

by skatingfan That was a heck of a couple of sets. Really awful that it ended that way.

by jazzyg It was completely awful that it ended that way, but it was not a heck of a couple of sets. It was terrible tennis. Even the one exception, when Rafa played out of his mind to come back from 2-6 down in the first-set tiebreak, came with some questionable decisions by Zverev, who served and volleyed at 6-3 because he was afraid to hit a groundstroke.

Compelling? Yes. But some of the worst misses I've ever seen in a slam semi by both players, repeatedly.

by ponchi101 ESPN L. America obviously has to fill in now for a lot of open time they were not counting on.
Pablo Stecco, whom I find reasonable, has started a conversation that, amongst the Spanish press (he is Argentinean, so he moves in the Spanish speaking corps) there are lots of rumors that this will be Rafa's final RG. Not retirement, but he will not be coming back for next year.
All the talking heads, which right now include Pico Monaca, Lucho Horna (RG Doubles winner), and Ferrer, are saying that it is possible. That Rafa is playing with a lot of pain in that injured foot.

Yes, this is picking up steam. I expect Rafa to skip grass for sure, and probably not play another tournament, just Laver Cup. I think he'll retire this year, but not sure when or how he would announce it. Wouldn't shock me if he announces it after the final, if he wins. If he loses, it would steal the winner's thunder.

A very good decision. I hope to God we don't see anywhere near the same level of injuries we saw last year at Wimbledon, but grass is going to grass so it seems like it'll be hard to not come out of it completely unscathed on both tours.

It has become a tough surface to play on. When you get wrong footed or have to run and stop in a hurry, the chances for an injury are very, very real.
I found it hard to believe that Roger, Serena and Delpo went down on grass, with serious injuries. I agree with you, I don't know how many players will have issues with the surface.

meganfernandez wrote: Fri Jun 03, 2022 5:39 pm Nadal has confirmed he isn't playing Wimbledon.
Sorry... Carillo just said Nadal is denying the report. Now she is saying it didn't come up in the English conference, and in the Spanish conference, he said he would rather lose Sunday and get a new foot, and life is more important than "any career I had." Not sure if someone inferred the Wimbledon thing from that sentence or if it came up separately.

by Suliso What a sad ending...

Yeah, I've mentioned it before. I've never played tennis on grass, so I just don't know how it feels, but I've played several other sports on grass and know what slipping on it can do. And every other sport that I can think of played on grass is played with some version of cleats once you reach so much as varsity level. Some very low cleats, some a good deal more substantial but something that helps with stabilization to cut down on injuries that a slip on grass can cause. I hope the Nike, Adidas, etc. are workshopping a solution. Whatever dimple is on tennis shoes must have worked in the past, but doesn't appear to be working as well with the increased power and speed with the updated equipment in tennis.

Yes. Pico is his Argie nickname.
ESPN has enlisted a whole lot of people for this RG. Together with Monaco, they have David Ferrer, Feliciano, Lucho Horna, Mariano Zabaleta and Monica Puig. Unfortunately, the can't get rid of Clerc and his sidekick, a dumb Vennie that says the most inane and ridiculous commentary and how, during the first week, admitted to have never played tennis. His sport is golf.
As you know, I watch tennis with the remote in my hand, and my thumb on the MUTE button.

by JazzNU So glad that Casper won that set. For that nonsense to be what breaks your momentum would be so unfair.

But there really are a disturbing amount of people that have gotten on court since Seles. Like yeah, they react quickly, but not nearly quick enough. I've only seen one incident recently at a sporting event (not tennis) where the security guard reacted quick enough to prevent something bad from happening if that's what the person's intent was.

And sporting events of all kinds need to get hip to the fact that it's not just men who are problematic. The majority of the demonstrators in the last couple of months as far as I can tell have been women, so clearly they have gotten hip to the fact that security views them as less of a threat. Yes, I know they haven't been truly dangerous, but that needs to have a "yet" on the end of it, most don't seem to be dealing with a full deck.

by ponchi101 And, in one of the Rafa matches, a little girl walked untouched by anybody and joined Rafa after the match was over. Sure, harmless, but as you say, there is a "yet" in there all the time.
