I don't like her game much but this is sad to see...

by ashkor87 This tournament is also a bit of an oddity but almost opposite to Madrid...Nadal has won it 10 times, Djokovic 6 times, Conchita 4 times, Zverev twice, and is defending champion. Clay court specialists seem to do quite well..but very few Italian champions have gone on to win the French..other than Nadal and Swiatek of course..some French champions have gone on to win the Italian the next year! Very strange.

Let's remember that every ATP stat regarding clay for the last two decades is completely irrelevant because we had that clay monster that simply won it all. And that other monster that won what the first one didn't.

but actually no real disagreement! all the same players, just slightly different probabilities. we are in danger of agreeing on something!

by ponchi101 We may be overlooking Coco. She is an RG finalist, and here she won't have to deal with low bounces.

by ptmcmahon Bah, when was the last time she won anything on clay?

/s

by JTContinental She only has 2 losses in 11 finals, and both the losses were on clay. She made the semis last year, so I think she'll be a factor, but not a winner.

by ti-amie I got to see most of Tyra Caterina Grant's match vs Antonia Ruzic. She's the 17 year old American who will play for her mother's country Italy.

I saw decent footwork and court sense, good shot making and heart. After taking the first set 6-3 and having squandered two match points she lost the next two sets 3-6 and 5-7.

If given time to develop mentally and physically - she was visibly tired in the third set of a match that ran about 2.5 hours - she could become a fixture in the top 20 - 30. She's just too young to make a valid estimate of what she could be. Good coaching and physical training will help her.

Turns out there wasn't - she didn't even start the match.

by ponchi101 Naomi. Anybody that can say held MP against Iga at RG cannot claim they are lost on clay. Sure, she is not that good on that surface as she is on hard courts, but that does not make you horrible.
The cow on ice learned how to play there, and it is not as if Naomi's strategy when playing does not include a lot of "hit, just hit" tennis.

by ashkor87 am very impressed (and surprised) with Baptiste beating Samsonova - a formidable slow court player..

by ashkor87 some players are just so much fun to watch as they move -Paolini is the latest - not great shots but beautiful movement..I wouldnt bet on her but always sorry when she is out of any tournament. Muchova is another such..

by mick1303 I can't quite put a finger on what is different about Griekspoor's technique. Something definitely separates him from the average stroke production as my eyes tell me. But what exactly?

by ashkor87 Impressive win by Kenin, one time runner up at RG, over another RU, Paylyuchenkova..she is so much more light and agile, finds angles so well..Pavs could have done better but didn't seem to have ideas

Seems to slap it a bit abruptly on the forehand, more action after and during contact than before..but many folks do that..his backhand seems quite normal...

by ashkor87 Will Kostyuk shake Kasatkina's hand now? Waiting to see!

by ponchi101 Muchova will go down as one of those "Richard Krajicek" players, sans the slam. Amazing strokes, great athletics, the endurance of an Italian sports car.
Too bad. She is such a beauty to watch play.

It's from the Olympics last year - Collins called out Swiatek's game playing.

by 3mlm I'm thinking the bad blood only gets worse now that Collins ousted Swiatek from Rome.

by Suliso Swiatek has declined significantly since last year. Why I don't know...

Suliso wrote: Sat May 10, 2025 1:36 pm Swiatek has declined significantly since last year. Why I don't know...
At Madrid she seemed not to be balanced on her feet.. wonder if her body has changed somehow ..

by ashkor87 My wife, who is a good player but doesn't watch much, says Swiatek looks to have become very muscular..like Sakkari perhaps, or Chang..I wonder. What do people here think?
Her serve has certainly become too attackable, she should flatten it a bit, add pace..it is too spinny right now ..

by ashkor87 Of course, Collins always had the pace and depth to push Swiatek back, not let get on the front foot..just as Rybakina has..but that 1 and 1 defeat at Coco's hands was even more concerning..

by ponchi101
Suliso wrote: Sat May 10, 2025 1:36 pm Swiatek has declined significantly since last year. Why I don't know...
I can't say either, but some things may be out of her control. The fear factor is gone. She no longer goes out (on clay) with one break in her pocket before the match starts.
The players that are beating her are hard hitters. I think it is JT here that says it best: she is a bully, and bullies do not like to be bullied. When she gets into two or three games that are even and she cannot impose her pace, she is the one shrinking.
Ashkor's assessment that her serve is not working seems to be on-the-money. The bunch of service return winners from Collins was high.
And, just maybe. As opposed to Rafa, Iga has too many players that do not like her. And that fuels the other player. Rafa went out there being respected; Iga goes out there being unliked. Maybe some of these players simply go out there and are able to focus better because they don't like her.
Anyway. It is not as if I am going to cry over her recent drop. And my assessment that she was good for 10 slams may have to be revisited. Too early for that, though.

I do not see Swiatek as a bully - what exactly in her behavior/demeanor gives you such vibes?
On the other hand - the list of players, who did not care for Rafa is/was rather long. And they had valid reason for their attitude - constant stalling, failing to follow servers pace, time abuse...

by JTContinental I didn't mean (and I don't think ponchi did either) a literal bully, just that she overwhelms players with her groundstrokes, but if anyone can neutralize them and fight back, she collapses.

by JTContinental FWIW, after her lopsided loss to Coco in Madrid, she said she is dealing with personal issues.

by Owendonovan If I got popped for doping, however innocent it's occurrence, no way I escape feeling looked at differently.

by patrick If Swiatek wins the French in a few weeks, I will bring this Rome thread back up saying she has declined

I noticed the change in her physique too. I think Sakkari is too muscular and that it hinders her.

I also agree about her serve.

ETA: The other thing about Iga is that she needs to control the pace of the match. When she isn't allowed to do that she is easily frustrated and tries to regain control which leads to errors. I think the tour has finally realized that about her.

Even if she wins RG, her decline is quantifiable. She is losing not in finals but in 2R and SF's.
Is she still one of the top favorites at RG? Yes, she is. She has the pedigree and top players can turn it around at the top tournaments. But she is not going through clay tournaments like before.

by ashkor87 Impressive as Peyton was, she doesn't seem all that comfortable at the net .. she is playing doubles, that will help, though doubles volleying is quite different ...

by ashkor87 How did Sinner play ?

by mick1303 Was watching Sinner's highlights. Too early to tell, but he seems to be ok. Added some muscles probably, which was the only good thing about this break, because it allowed him to hit the gym extensively without compromising the game. We will see how he was affected mentally (if any) once he'll face some stiffer opposition.

by ponchi101 Does anybody know what that disagreement at the net between Tsitsipas and Fils was about?

by ashkor87 Rybakina has really collapsed... former champion, and not so very long ago..

by ponchi101 She will always have that Wimby and that Aussie open final.
Yes, you are right. Another player that simply had her big moment and then, could not sustain it. Let's not forget Ons, once a verifiable threat on all surfaces.
But, they should look at Svitolina. Playing some of her best tennis at this "old" age. And they should talk to Connors, who went from 1978 to 1982 with no Slams, then captured 3. The game is cyclical, and they can come back.
Mayyyyyyybe.

Fils on what he and Tsitsipas said to each other at the net after their match in Rome “At the end you guys were talking, I’m sure there are no hard feelings.. Arthur: “I like him. He’s a great guy. A great champion. It was a bit tight in the middle of the 2nd set. He went for my body. It’s part of the game. There’s nothing wrong with it. I tried to find a way to fight. by ashkor87 Paolini Vs Ostapenko is the most intriguing here..

by jazzyg I was the 1st person here to call Swiatek a bully.

It has nothing ro do with her personality and everything to do with her game. When someone stands up to her, she retreats. It has been a pattern for quite some time. More players are standing up to her now.

by ashkor87 Sinner looked good but a bit off-balance sometimes.. I would expect Alcaraz or Zverev to win this title.. the womrn, Ostapenko is the best clay court player left now, I would expect her to win.. Andreeva is slowly rounding into form, should be a good bet for the French..

by ashkor87 Only one female past champion still afloat, and 2 males.looks like we will have new italian open champions this time..

by ashkor87 to me, Mertens is a 'nothing' player.. I dont see how she can beat Shnaider here (unless Shnaider beats herself,, of course)

C'mon, that is harsh. She is not a "nothing" player. She has been successful in doubles, and has been a top 20 player for a long time. She is just good at everything but has no shots to finish the other player.
She is like a Mardy Fish. Or something a bit below Bencic. I looked her up, and she has 9 singles titles, 21 doubles titles and has been ranked #1 in doubles.
Not "nothing". She has had a very decent career.

by ashkor87 Mertens is undoubtedly one of the best doubles players in the world, but she has no weapons to win singles matches against good players, and Shnaider was too good for her, as I predicted.. 'ok, 'nothing player' is a bit harsh but I meant she has no weapons.

by jazzyg Clay is by far Ostapenko's worst surface. Check her career winning percentage.

He might even win the match ...

by ashkor87 watching Paolini vs Shnaider, taking turns at spewing UFEs.. not fun to see..

by ashkor87 Amazed that Hurkacz is still there, winning, at Rome

by ponchi101 Hurkacz has been a major "disappointment". I remember when he won Miami; he looked good enough to be in the top 10 for a long time. Yet he did not.
It would be good for him to come back.

by ashkor87 Saw Hurkacz at W, unimpressed..nothing other than serve... when you see a player live...

by jazzyg Hurkacz was playing on one leg at Wimbledon, or one arm, I can't remember which. Injuries are what set him back.

But yes, even when healthy and confident, his serve is his biggest weapon.

by jazzyg Paolini won the first four games.

Then Shnaider won 11 of the next 13.

Then Paolini won 12 of the last 14.

Shnaider beat herself and let the crowd bother her, but Paolini hung in there and allowed both factors to be possible.

by ponchi101 Love that analysis. It shows the statistical nature of the game.

by ashkor87 Coco credits improved footwork for her success at Madrid and Rome. I do think her forehand problems come from poor footwork..so if she has realised that, that is great.

by skatingfan Well that wasn't supposed to happen Zheng def. Sabalenka 6-4, 6-3 - first win for Zheng in their seven career meetings.

by ponchi101 Is it really that surprising? Q can play...

by JTContinental Peyton Stearns is the first player in the WTA to win 3 straight third set tiebreaks

Sure, but the record against Sabalenka was getting to the point where it was more mental than anything so it was surprising that it was now that Zheng managed to get a very consistent win.

by ashkor87 saw the match today.. QZ played well, but Sabalenka looked tired, unbalanced because she didnt always have the energy.. the tournaments and matches she has played have caught up with her. She should take a rest now, else she will be upset early at RG

I'm almost certain that Sabs won't be playing Strasbourg next week. Arnya won't play next until the French Open for sure.

by ashkor87 Peyton is a good player but I don't think she has the class to trouble Paolini here...we shall see. How she beat Osaka and Svitolina baffles me..

by Suliso Sinner completely blew away Ruud, one of the best clay court players we have. Instantly a top 2 favorite for RG.

by mick1303 It's a pity that Zverev's presser was before that. Someone should've asked him if he thinks that Sinner played with different kind of balls ))

by Suliso Just for the record the last Italians singles champions here are Adriano Panatta (1976) and Raffaella Reggi (1985). Panatta is also the last finalist (1978) there as for women Sara Errani lost to Serena in 2014.

by jazzyg The Gauff-Zheng opener was one of the worst sets of tennis I've ever seen between two good players.

by skatingfan The Gauff/Zheng match was compelling but necessarily quality.

by ti-amie The Gauff/Zheng match was a sh**show. If they weren't double faulting they were overhitting or just plain playing bad tennis.

I watched the first two sets and had stuff to do so couldn't watch the third set.

by Owendonovan I thought Zheng would take the title. I often feel Coco wins because of poor play on her opponents part.

I thought Zheng would win it all too especially after her win over Sabalenka. She played tight and so did Cori and neither one of them really relaxed into their game.

I had such high hopes for the match.

by ashkor87 Tiebreaks are usually about mental strength..good sign for Coco that she is winning so many close ones!
It is also about knowing what shots to hit and what Not to try..

My position about parity gets blown away by him immediately.
It is him and Carlos. Below that there is a mess, but these two are gaining considerable separation from the rest of the ATP.

by Suliso Parity is rare in my opinion. There hasn't been one on ATP tour for more than 20 years now. A bit more common for women in recent times.

by ponchi101 I know. The sole brief period was there between 2000-2002, with Leyton being a bit above the rest.
But below the top 2 players, I stick to my statement. It is very even all over.

by ashkor87 Alcaraz leads Sinner 7-4, including the last 3...IW, RG and Beijing B is pretty fast, so....
I would expect Alcaraz to win this one. Clay, after all!

by ashkor87 what accounts for Paolini's improvement over the past 2-3 years? any insights?

Sinner seems to have pulled his hamstring at the end of the Paul match.. I cant see him being fit enough to give Alcaraz a fight in the finals..

I don't disagree with you, but Sinner says it's a blister on his foot, and that the leg is not an issue.

by mick1303 It was quite clear that Sinner's movement was severely impaired comparing to the previous match. If these blisters caused such discomfort, they will not heal in two days. I'm afraid the final will be anti-climatic...

by ashkor87 We all saw the stumble..didn't look like a blister!

The location will make a big difference. This will become an old-fashioned Davis Cup match after the second point won by Sinner.
And the Italians will make noise and clap hard against Carlos whenever he will hit the ball.

by skatingfan Paolini getting it done in straight sets, and demonstrating that last year was not a fluke, and that she can stay in the top 10 this year as well.

by ashkor87 What accounts for her astonishing improvement at this late stage?

by Suliso Gauff is very consistent and clay might be her best surface, but she isn't really winning tournaments as often as one would expect from #2.

Paolini has won her last two matches vs Gauff. Still a Slam title seems unlikely. She could be overpowered and in a long tournament someone will.

by Owendonovan
ashkor87 wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 5:04 pm What accounts for her astonishing improvement at this late stage?
Playing the top players enough to figure out their games.
She appears to enjoy herself out there.
Maturity.

by ponchi101 Everybody is getting better, and therefore, so did she.
And as Owen says, she is very consistent. No ups or downs mentally during a match. So, you get to play her best tennis for 3 sets, something that does not happen with a lot of other players.

by mick1303 Her progression is quite dramatic: first 100 matches of her career 41:59; 100 the most recent ones 69:31.

by ti-amie Cori's loss today was mental. There were times that she looked completely confused and uncertain of what she should do to counter the aggressive, confident play of Paolini.

by ti-amie

by ti-amie

by ashkor87 Tennis-wise, Paolini's greatest strength is her footwork and balance, and speed around the court..I had predicted last year that she would do well at W..the same this year. With Rybakina on her way out, there is no clear favorite at Wimbledon...

Hard to see anyone beat Alcaraz

by ashkor87 Two things were proven today..Alcaraz is the best volleyer in the world..and in a tie break, never play a shot you haven't played in the match thus far! Percentages..

Indeed. I think Jannik can do it, but the percentages are piling on favor of Alcaraz.
This time, for RG, we will most likely agree. Alcaraz a prohibitive favorite, Sinner for the possible upset, the field for the Hail Mary.

by ti-amie

by ti-amie

Look where Sinner was!

by ti-amie

by dryrunguy Near the end of the first set, Carlitos was serving at 4-5, and Sinner had two set points at 15-40. Carlos hit a first serve out wide; it wasn't a monster. It was tricky but returnable. Sinner hit a chip return that landed in the middle of the net. He was never really the same after that, though he did come back to life to hold down 0-5 and make Carlos work for it to serve out the match.

I want a 5-set Roland Garros final between these two. I shall settle for nothing less.

by ponchi101 I think you will get your final. I don't think it will go 5 sets.
Something about Carlos' game bothers Jannik.

Maybe just the clay...

by ponchi101 I don't know. The clay did not bother him one bit on that terrible plastering of Ruud.
And I really only guessing. I can't see what makes Carlos' game hard for Jannik.
