Hip injury. That's tough.
https://www.wtatennis.com/news/3208286/ ... d-and-rome

by ponchi101 And speaking of hips. Rafa is also out of Madrid, stating the hip re-hab has not been effective.
We may have seen the last of him.
Odd that Murray, Stan and him would suffer similar injuries, at one time of other of their careers.

by ti-amie The ATP Madrid Entry Lists were finally UPDATED to show Berrettini out. He's citing injury.

Since we're just throwing things out there, I need him to get a haircut.

There's were a decent number of fans on-site today, but they were at the Spanish women's players' qualifying matches and also a few of the men's qualifying matches from what I saw more than anywhere else. Benoit Paire's match was very well attended, for instance.

I'm not sure if there's a price difference between qualifying matches and first round ones today. Or this could be about the hullabaloo surrounding the lack of Spanish players and wildcards after the new owners took over.

by ponchi101 ESPN down here did not even show today matches. They will start tomorrow.

...might make it easier to avoid a default.

by JazzNU I know very few care about her so I assume that's why she's able to fly under the radar the way she has been, but Yastremska's results pre and post suspension are night and day. Most with overturned suspensions return to previous form and she most certainly has not. Kudos on the creative defense, but the few people who bought that must be wondering now why they ever did.

So completely out of my mind that I had not even noticed she had been gone. And returned.
Not that I mind either way. Txs for noticing.

by ponchi101 And, BTW. Leylah lost today to a 15 yo ranked 194 (well, too young to be ranked much higher). She is actually ranked so low her BIO page in the WTA website is empty.
That 2021 USO final will go down as perhaps the most extreme example of a Black Swan in tennis, or even all sports. Leylah has done better than Emma, but she has also failed to gain any traction from that good run.

Not making excuses for Leylah, she probably should've won against the very young player, but this is a loss that might not look so bad in a few years. This event is now owned by IMG, which means this player is going to be a wild card entry, meaning she's an IMG repped player. It's how they work with few exceptions. They rarely rep nobodies so she's likely a hot prospect to keep an eye on in the future. They have had plenty of busts, but the potential is there just about every time, many times with good to great junior results. The exception to this rule, besides veteran players returning from injury, is if it is her sister that is the really talented player and they are just doing a favor by giving her a wild card. Given her win over Leylah, I'm thinking that's not the case here and they think both sisters have top tier talent, in the same vein as the Fruhvirtova sisters.

I think Fernandez has returned to the ranking/results that were expected. She had a good run at that US Open, but it's hard to replicate that run all the time when you're winning matches tight matches in 3 sets.

Still early, and I am covering my tracks by the use of "perhaps". Right now, it seems like that final was a fluke, but both players are still very young. Again, making conclusions after that final ("Emma will become a dominant force in the next years, Leylah has Slam champion written all over her") was a risky proposition. Making the opposite claims right now is not without peril, either.

by ti-amie Leylah is still out there fighting. Raducanu seems to be the one who isn't willing to put in the work to try and top an elite athlete.

The loss ended up not looking so bad in a few days (one, actually). Andreeva took out Haddad Maia, seeded 13, so maybe this girl can play more than what her ranking right now says.

The loss ended up not looking so bad in a few days (one, actually). Andreeva took out Haddad Maia, seeded 13, so maybe this girl can play more than what her ranking right now says.
Andreeva reached the final of the junior Australian Open this year and won two ITF $60K tournaments on clay in April, including a win over Podoroska who reached the FO semifinals a few years ago. She's won six ITF titles overall and is 13-0 in ITF wins this year. She'll be 16 on Sunday.

by ponchi101 Seems like the book is out on Ruud. 3 & 4 loss against Matteo Arnaldi (who?), who came in from the qualies. And this is clay, so I would say Casper has no explanations for this.

Not that bad of a loss most likely. One that Casper should win with this being his best surface, but he's clearly in a bit of a slump this season, wouldn't say it's over and done for him anytime soon. Arnaldi is somewhat of an unknown, but not for much longer. He was in the Next Gen Finals last year. He beat Munar last week and this week Paire and Fils (the talented young Frenchmen who has been on the rise recently) in addition to Ruud. I think he's about to crack the top 100 and he's pretty young, so I'm guessing we'll be adding him into the conversation of the Italian men's resurgence.

by skatingfan We'll have a much better idea where Ruud's game, and head are at after the French Open. He has a fair number of points to defend through till the end of the clay court season, but so far he's matched last year's results with the exception that he lost 45 points because he didn't play Munich, probably because of the changes to Rome & Madrid.

by Owendonovan Ruud's rut strikes me as a personal issue, not really a tennis issue, distracted.

by ashkor87 Samsonova justifying my confidence in her.. that was an impressive demolition of Ostapenko.. the players seem to find that the ball flies a bit too much at Madrid, because of the altitude, maybe doesnt suit Ostapenko's flat out hitting..
anyway, one should not read too much into Madrid.. the champion at Madrid seldom goes on to win at RG (except if his name is Nadal)..

I don't have any information about this, but there were commentators on his final Aussie Open match that felt the need to tell me something similar in a very strange and offputting way, so there definitely might be something to your theory.

by JazzNU Petkovic said during the Karatsev vs. Van de Zandschulp, that "Van de Zandschulp just looks perpetually disappointed by life." Absolutely dying. Botic is Dutch. Now, I really don't want to go for the stereotypes but, when a GERMAN WOMAN says that you are perpetually disappointed by life, well... ;)

Further up the topic I mentioned that Leylah's 1R loss looked very bad. JazzNu corrected me a bit, the next day Andreeva's win over BHM provided some data for that correction, today's win proved me totally wrong.
Not only she won, the score was convincing. Near-future top 20?

by ti-amie Thiem was up 3-1 in the third set TB. It's now 6-5 in favor of Stefanos who takes the TB 7-6(5) and the match. Thiem is looking disgusted with himself.

by ponchi101 He should be, but later tonight he should see that that was a good loss. He played toe to toe with a top 5 player. Let's hope it brings in better things.

by ti-amie Sakkari dropped the first set 3-6 but is up 5-3 in the second vs Masarova.

by ti-amie Sakkari won the second set and Masarova seems to have disappeared into the ether. The chair is asking where she is while Sakkari paces. She was gone for 6 minutes.

by ponchi101 "Game, set, match, Ms Sakkari, by default".
That should not be so hard.

by ashkor87 That point shown a bit earlier 'Oh Carlos' is incredible.. i really think Carlos Alcaraz is the best player I have ever seen - he seems like a blend of Federer and Nadal..he actually reminds me of Agassi a bit but of course has a much better serve and volleys much better than Agassi ever did..

by ashkor87 Sakkari vs Badosa...how do they compare? Badosa is in better form right now but ...I have always felt Sakkari is better defensively than Badosa but will that matter on this surface? Hard to tell ...if it gets close, Badosa is tougher mentally than Sakkari is..
Of course, in the larger scheme, it may not matter..it will still come down to Swiatek and Sabalenka, probably...

I know, the guy can play at an incredible level. But "BEST player I have ever seen" is quite a statement, especially since you have obviously seen a lot of players.
Better than Roger at his peak? Better than Novak? I say that, if you only take the peak of a player's career, he is still below Roger's version between 2005-2007. Those three years in which he was basically invincible anywhere except when facing Rafa on clay.
I don't know if you saw the first set of the Ruusovuoru match. Carlitos was spraying balls all over. That point was amazing, indeed. But he played plenty that were less than sterling.

Claiming that Badosa is tougher than Sakkari forgets Badosa's penchant for retirements. I will borrow from your "Tier" system and will say that they are both Tier 2 players, with Badosa having one important tournament that Sakkari lacks (that IW win) and Sakkari being a bit more consistent, with deeper results at slams.
Very similar. I included Sakakri in my TSiP team because of that consistency. But that match may go a long way, because I don't see either being able to hit through the other. Very long rallies, and most likely 3 sets.

Today's ATP heavyweight bout. Bernardes has been trying to stop Rune from being dq'd throughout. I don't know if I agree with that.

Agree with you but would you not say retirement in a match is a sign of physical frailty, not mental? Sakkari has a tendency to blow leads just when she is about to win...Badosa doesn't do that...not that I am a big fan of Badosa's.

ashkor87 wrote: Sun Apr 30, 2023 11:55 pm My high opinion of Alexandrova is not a joke now, is it? I hope folks here are willing to acknowledge she is a good player!
Did anyone say she wasn't a good player? Most of us don't consider her a contender, there's a big difference there.

Personally, you giving her individual odds almost every grand slam still isn't something I see as her being remotely worthy of.

by ti-amie So it seems that the electronic system at Madrid was malfunctioning and it was behind the anger of Qinwen and Holger, both of whom lost their matches. If the system can't tell on clay which mark is which how do you get rid of line judges for clay events? It's idiotic.

Also the reason there was a "rock paper scissors" game at the net the other day was because the electronic coin flip wasn't working.

by JazzNU Excellent win for Foki. He was so close in giving Alcaraz a run for his money in Barcelona, glad he was able to get it done against Rune after battling so hard and almost giving it away.

Oh yeah, she was hot. Not as egregious as the one in the Foki vs. Rune match since that had the added element of Hawkeye weighing in (and let's be clear, the controversial call went Rune's way, the calls in Qinwen's matches went against her), but the calls did look questionable and she was mad enough that the visible mark had to have been showing the ball not touching the line. She spent an entire changeover telling the chair it was ridiculous and to check the mark, the chair agreed but couldn't change it according to the rules, just like the the Foki vs. Rune match.

Not saying the distraction didn't affect Qinwen, but her serve, or lack thereof, lost her the match, not the potentially botched calls.

If they are set on this electronic calling, and it seems as if it's a done deal, I can see this being a big enough issue where there are overrules allowed or challenges going the other way where the human chair umpire is allowed to overall the technology in clear cases. That also seems like it would create distrust in the system overall, but still, I'll be surprised if it's just this all or nothing where the tech is telling you something with the camera zooming in to tell you it's actually the opposite. Especially when the data tells them the error rate is just greater on clay than other surfaces and there's not a ton that can improve it right now.

Ashkor, it is what JazzNu says. NOBODY is saying she is a bad player; I mean, she is the 17th ranked player in the world! She is damn good. What we are saying is that, for example, when you say she is better than Pegula, we disagree. (Or I do).
And you have to admit you have your favorites: you also praise Samsonova frequently, and both are doing very well. But you will excuse me (I hope) if next time Alexandrova loses in a 1R I send you a wink. Because she can reach a 4R here in Madrid, and if she loses 1R in Rome, I will not be surprised.

How are we defining good? She's a top twenty player. She's consistent, but no results that really stand out other than a semifinal in Madrid last year, and quarterfinal in Miami this year. It certainly looks like she's reaching the peak of career so we'll see what she can do over the next year or so.

well, unlike most people, I dont wait till someone wins 22 majors before I recognize his greatness.. make no mistake, Alcaraz IS great - ten years from now, we will be calling him the GOAT.. I go by the quality of someone's game, not how many titles he has won, or what his ranking is - also, I judge players (or anyone, including musicians) on their best day, not their average or worst .. everyone has bad days, the question is - how good are they at their best? Yes, it cant be a one-time thing, it has to be sustained over a period of time. Alcaraz has sustained this level of play for almost 2 years, it is time to call him great. and 'best' is a qualitative, personal judgement, which I am making. He is the best I have ever seen. Period.

Ten years from now he will be the goat. That means he will have 20 slams (let's say that) at the age of 30. Seeing as careers are extending, he could finish with 25 slams.
Hope we will able to have that conversation then.

My bold part. If you judge people by the quality of his/her game, where do you rank players such as Laconte, Rios or Kyrgios? Amazing games, no results to back those up? Serious question, not teasing you.

by JazzNU Great win for Sakkari, I'm glad she seems to have moved fully past whatever illness had hampered her in recent weeks. And I hope Paula is encouraged by her level in the last two months, it's considerably better and she really just seems to need the luck of a good draw to break her way.

Rough loss for Kasatkina, but a good win for Kudermetova, who has also struggled a bit this season.

And just a fantastic win for Mayar Sherif. Thought she could do it and just so happy for her. First 1000 QF for her.

French Open QF in 2019- including wins over mini-me version of Jabeur, Pliskova (second seed) and Kanepi. A total of six other Grand Slam singles 4R results- she's made the 4R in all of the other Slams. High ranking of 14. Heck, he's made the QF in doubles at the Aussie and Roland Garros.

Did anyone say she wasn't a good player? Most of us don't consider her a contender, there's a big difference there.

Personally, you giving her individual odds almost every grand slam still isn't something I see as her being remotely worthy of.
Because she can reach a 4R here in Madrid, and if she loses 1R in Rome, I will not be surprised.

by ti-amie I blame what's happening to Raducanu on the LTA. They were so starved for achievement by someone other than Murray they went a bit nuts with Raducanu. Are her parents at fault too? From what I've read her father has become a "tennis father" and misused a lot of coaches who were willing to help his daughter formulate a game for herself, deciding that instead of taking on a full time, expensive, coach they would pick and choose what they wanted from each one so now we have a player, a Slam winner, who is at best incoherent on court.

And yes I know Woz did the same thing but she started doing it later in her career.

It's just my opinion and if she wants to play tennis she has time to get serious about both her physical training and Tennis 101.

It's undoubtedly an upset. But, at least for me, I am never really surprised if Martic beats anyone on clay. The days of my surprise at that ended in like 2018. She has wins over some of the better clay courters of the last 10 years, so pick against her on that surface at your own peril.

They really, really did. And as the US Open winner, they've been happy to overpromote her like she's the second coming to add to what the LTA does. Like I said in the Tennis Off-Court thread, the most influential tennis orgs have been the ones driving this over and above everyone else.

well, unlike most people, I dont wait till someone wins 22 majors before I recognize his greatness.. make no mistake, Alcaraz IS great - ten years from now, we will be calling him the GOAT..

Leconte and Rios were great players, not just very good .candidates for best player never to win a major .kyrgios will soon join them!

by ashkor87 I was thinking Alcaraz reminds me most of Laver...blazing speed, topspin, complete game, great volley, good, not great serve...

by ashkor87 Nice to see Begu doing well..she really is very good, needs a bit of luck..Martic too...

by meganfernandez Finally seeing some good consistency on the WTA between Iga, Pegula and Sabalenka. What has happened to Garcia? Is she injured?

Remember that, if you take out last year, this is the quality of tennis that Garcia has produced for a decade. Last year was the anomaly, not the norm. She may be regressing to her level.

No, but her coach dumped her right before the WTA Finals, it's great she managed to win that. It seems to have sent her off course a bit this season, but the coach and her re-united a few weeks ago, so she might be able to capture some of last year's magic again soon.

Last year's turn for her started at RG, she played doubles with Kiki and won and then went on her successful singles run the rest of the season.

The other thing is, hopefully she is dealing with it better now, but she very clearly said she was not expecting the attention she got from talking about her eating disorder in the beginning of this year.

No, it's not. A decade? You do remember she was Top 10 before this year and last year, right?

by ponchi101 And she was around the 40's during a long span. She and Kiki looked like sure-fire Slam contenders, and then it did not come true. Her ranking history is mostly in between the 40's and 20's.

Yes I know her history, but you said she's looked like this for a decade. She was top 10 about 5 years ago. We all know she looked considerably better last season, but she had looked like a formidable player before that as well. And even in her down years, she had times where she seemed like she could get back especially. That's why people were confused and didn't totally lose hope with her, she'd convince you in those off years with brief flashes that she still had it.

I never thought Kiki looked like a sure-fire Slam contender unless you're talking about Doubles...

by Suliso This looks like yet another Swiatek - Sabalenka final. Likely Alcaraz will defend his title albeit there is some strong competition left.

by ashkor87 I do find it very odd that it is rare for the top 2 seeds to meet in the finals and even more rare for #1 to beat #2 in the finals.
.maybe rankings dont mean much after all!

by jazzyg Karatsev is back!

In his last tournament, he lost 6-2, 6-0 to van de Zandschulp, making him 15-36 in main draw ATP tour matches since going out in the third round of the Australian Open last year while making more than 100 unforced errors against Mannarino. It's been mystifying to me how a guy who made the Aussie Open semis in 2021 and then won three tournaments and reached a final of another in a 12-month span could return to being as bad as he was before his breakthrough. He was not just a one-hit wonder. Some really accomplished players fail to win three tournaments in their career--to wit, Sakkari has exactly one title to her name--but Karatsev appeared to be proving his white-hot streak was a fluke even thought I saw his tremendous upside with my own eyes in 2021.

Suddenly, in Madrid, Karatsev clobbered what has been an in-form Struff 6-4, 6-2 in qualifying, and Struff is still in the main draw as a lucky loser. Maybe Struff already knew he had a spot in the main draw because of a withdrawal and did not give 100 percent, but that was Karatsev's first impressive result in more than a year. He has backed it up by reaching the quarters, beating Medvedev comfortably in straight sets today while improving to 4-1 against him lifetime.

All I've seen of his entire run is the last three points of his win against clay-challenged Medvedev, so I don't know how he is playing, but it would be hilarious if Karatsev adds a 1000 tournament title to his haul. He did nothing his entire career until his run in the 2021 Aussie Open, which was the most impressive ball-striking I've ever seen from an unknown player, and he kept that form for the next few months before becoming erratic and then falling off a cliff and out of the top 100.

In the little I saw of him during his descent, his return of serve, which was awesome early in 2021, was awful. He tried to hit winners on every return and missed over and over on every decent first serve. He also sprayed balls all over the court when he was forced to move after hitting one rocket winner after the other on the run at the 2021 Aussie Open.

He gets the Fritz-Zhang winner next and if he wins that, a likely semifinal against Tsitspipas, although it could be Struff in a rematch of their qualifying match. Will he turn back into a pumpkin again or is this the start of another torrid streak?

by ashkor87 Saw Karataev live in Pune, he looked a notch above everyone else..didn't win the tournament, though! But he is certainly impressive, looks to have extra time to hit the ball : always a sign of class..

You do understand that you are selectively picking data, right?
It is akin to when one player that you like wins, and you bring it up as prove of their quality. But when they lose, we disregard that specific match. It is a bit more complex than that.

by JazzNU That was a ton of fun. They both had their chances, they both deserved to win, but I felt like Zhang was really the aggressor towards the end. Fritz shouldn't walk away from this with his head down, but he'll likely be upset that he didn't close it out in 2, he had the initial advantage in that tiebreak and it was seeming like it was a done deal at that point.

by ponchi101 Of course, ESPN had to cut to Spanish football halfway through the 3rd set so I could not see the end of the match.
Zhang can play. The FH is solid, the movement too. He has power and he has size. A possible member of whichever triumvirate ends up dominating the sport? (in a couple of years, I mean).

The potential is definitely there with Zhang. It looked like Fritz had closed it out at one point in the third set TB but next thing you knew Fritz was walking off court as the loser.

But just prima facie, is it not surprising,,?

by ponchi101 Ah, that is a different matter indeed. We would have to look at the data and see indeed if the #1/#2 matchups have a certain skew. For example, if they are split 55-45%, that would still be statistically possible (meaning, it would not imply some reason why). We would need to look at, for example, how many of those matchups were Roger/Rafa (we know Rafa has the H2H), how many were Chrissie/Martina (almost split down the middle), and when were all those meetings indeed between #1/#2 rankings.
And if indeed, let's say that the #2 ranked player had won a statistically more significant number of times, we would need to see if there would be an underlying reason.

Right now, Iga/Aryna are split 5/2. But had Aryna won in Stuttgart, it would have been 4/3, so we can see how the law of small samples (which I just made up, as there is no such thing in stats other than "don't make conclusions from small samples") can greatly affect such matchups.

by Owendonovan I'm happy to see Borna string a few quality matches over ranked players for a change.

by ashkor87 Pegula vs Kudermetova..the better movers have been doing well here.. kudermetova is a C, Pegula an A in this dimension..

by ashkor87 Well, that didn't happen...K's power was too much for Jpeg

by ponchi101 One of those strange matches in which the loser won more games and more points.
Only in tennis.

by ti-amie Meanwhile Iga took 27m to bagel Petra Martic in the first set. Martic has won three games in the second set so Iga is serving for it at 5-3, 40-15.

This is why I for one was surprised by Martic's run here. She's been playing the way she played today for awhile now and was never really in this match. I wish she'd put up more of a fight instead of constantly looking lost out there.

I mean, Iga has made much more accomplished and higher ranked players than Martic look pedestrian, so I wouldn't use her as a measuring stick for how Martic looks personally, especially on clay. There have been a more than a few great players, including top 10 players who have won as few games against Iga this year and last and it's not been an indictment on them for most, don't see why it should be on Martic.

Assuming "a bit too late" refers to a Grand Slam, I'd say not necessarily too late. It doesn't happen much in the age of the dominant Big 4 (in this respect Andy deserves mention, his consistency is impressive and he has gotten to a high number of SFs and later at majors and it gets ignored because of the era), but there used to a winner that would slip in now and then that was less expected. Feel like Cincy showed it's not out of the question it can be him. He got thru a very difficult draw to hoist the trophy, so I wouldn't rule him out right now.

Highly unlikely for sure, but in a Thomas Johansson won a Grand Slam kind of way, I wouldn't rule it out. If the Cincy form were to become more consistent for Borna, which seems very dependent on his remaining healthy, I would remove most of the qualifiers and just say, he's got a shot, especially with his record against some of the would be top contenders like Tsitsipas, Zverev, Medvedev, Thiem, and Auger-Aliassime (I'm assuming Sascha and Dominic return to previous form). I don't believe he's played any of the younger contenders often enough to know how he might fare regularly against them.

by ti-amie I'm so glad there are some Borna Coric stans on this site. If not for injuries...

by ponchi101 Always liked him. But, hard to be a fan when you are away from the tour so often.
As JazzNu points out, if Johansson took an Aussie, we may be due for another surprise slam winner. If it is him, no qualms here.

I guess we'll see. I was sure we'd see a period of open majors when the big 4 were finished, or mostly finished but now it looks like we could just transition to the Carlos Alcarez era - at least on hard, and clay - maybe Wimbledon will be the wildly unpredictable slam for a while.

Because Alexandrova played an even worse match. If there was one day in which Alexandrova could and should have beaten Iga was that match. It was a very poorly played match from both players. UE's galore.

by jazzyg Karatsev beat Zhang comfortably to reach the semis.

Zhang did not play well, and Karatsev still has issues returning serve, but he hits the cleanest ball of anyone on tour in my opinion. I like his chances against Tsitsipas if they play in the semifinals, although Tsitipas should win if he has a good serving day. I love his chances against Struff seeing as how he already beat him 4 and 2 in this tournament. I always notice when a qualifier faces a lucky loser he beat later in the tournament, but I cannot imagine it has ever happened as a semifinal, and it definitely has not happened this deep in a 1000 event before.

by JazzNU

by skatingfan Karatsev is playing one of his few patches of winning consecutive matches this week, and he will probably go back to losing first round for several months next week. His tournament record is really interesting because he wins titles, and then loses a half dozen first round matches.

Jan-Lennard Struff Or Stefanos Tsitsipas VS (Q) Aslan Karatsev
Not Before 9:00 PM
(OSE) Victoria Azarenka/Beatriz Haddad Maia VS Leylah Fernandez/Taylor Townsend

by ti-amie I expected Zhang to lose today. He played and won three back to back matches that went three sets and involved multiple tie breaks.

by ti-amie

by ti-amie Struff 7-6(5) first set over Stefanos. It seems his coach is doing a Papa Tsitsipas routine today.

by ti-amie Stefanos 7-5 second set. Struff took the potty break.

by ti-amie

by jazzyg I really like Karatsev's game when he is on, but there's no way he would have beaten Struff 6-4, 6-2 in the qualifying if Struff had not known he was already guaranteed a spot in the main draw as the No. 1 seed in qualifying. I don't know that for a fact, but his level has been phenomenal every time I have seen him in this tournament. He just played an outstanding third set against Tsitsipas.

by ti-amie Did anyone else note the mass exodus from the stands after Struff/Tsitsipas ended?

What do people think about Feli in glasses?

by ponchi101 The exodus started for me when I came back home and ESPN decided that it was better to show football matches than fulfill their statement of showing the night session.
There is a limit to how late a match can start for people to stay for it. Even for a famously nocturnal city like Madrid.

So for the semis we have the #1 seed, the #17 seed, a Q and a LL. Whole bunch of upsets, indeed.

jazzyg wrote: Thu May 04, 2023 3:39 pmKaratsev beat Zhang comfortably to reach the semis. Zhang did not play well, and Karatsev still has issues returning serve, but he hits the cleanest ball of anyone on tour in my opinion. I like his chances against Tsitsipas if they play in the semifinals, although Tsitipas should win if he has a good serving day.
AHHHH, succubus Suliso- you have clearly lured Yet Another into your Lair. HAVE you no shame?!?! :gorgeous:

Iga is doing Iga things. Kudermetova and her husband are both frustrated. Tl;dr you're not missing anything. Oh, Kudermetova did win a game to open the second set.

by ti-amie A wry smile from Kudermetova to her coach/husband just about says it all.

by Owendonovan I'm really looking forward to being at work tomorrow with absolutely no chance of even glancing at a score until 11:30. I really like the energy both Borna and Carlito bring to their matches. No one will ever pass Chrissy's 125 matches on clay, but Iga's the best we've seen on clay since Henin.

by ponchi101 Carlitos is entering the region of "inevitable".

DUDE. Let go of your Top 3 GOAT PTSD Years already. Take a deep breath. SHEEEESH. :)

I mean, LOL, Carlitos has won one Slam title so far!! He could end up having a great career. But, truly, we have no idea. He's already dealt with a serious injury issue. He has a lot that he still can, and should improve- most definitely including his serve. I do not see him dominating the way the top 3 did. Let's just enjoy this kid doing his best. Anything can happen.

by ponchi101 And one thing does not exclude the other. You are old enough to remember McEnroe in 1984. That year, he was "inevitable". You remember his record.
Borna played an excellent match today; the first set was very high quality, from both. Yet, you (of maybe it was just I) had that feeling that Borna would not win. As well as he was playing, he simply would not.
I am willing to give Alcaraz all the time he wants and needs. Will he reach GOAT status? Who knows. But, right now, let me know how much money you are willing to put on Struff on Sunday.
That is all I am saying.

(7) Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden VS Karen Khachanov/Andrey Rublev
Not Before 6:30 Pm
(1) Iga Swiatek
VS (2) Aryna Sabalenka

by ti-amie

by ponchi101 Madrid-Rome is not even 1 hour of flight away, and certainly the three of them can afford a private jet. Stay in Madrid and practice with them, which will be better than practicing with Gils in Rome.

by Owendonovan Only Norrie and Sinner have beaten Carlito this year. Maybe Saint Holger or Djokovic can make a run at him as they haven't met this year yet.

by mick1303 Not a whole lot of players won TMS both in singles and in doubles. Since 1990 (the emergence of Masters Series) there were 22 of them. After Rublev-Khachanov win it is 24.

by Suliso That was outstanding from Sabalenka, albeit she should have won in straight. She's now in a pole position for #1 ranking, possibly as soon as after RG.

by ti-amie That was a match the WTA needed. If you didn't have a chance to watch it try to find a replay. It looked as if Sabalenka was going to win in straight sets but Iga got a crucial game to level the second set at 3 all. Aryna wobbled for just a minute but it was enough for Iga to steal the second set.

In the third set Sabalenka went back to what she was doing before mid second set - keeping Iga off balance, using the shot clock to stop huge momentum swings to Iga, and in the end it was Iga who was being pulled off court and unable to handle the shots Aryna was sending her way. It was a great match, worthy of a Final, and maybe, just maybe, the WTA has the rivalry it needs.

by jazzyg Swiatek is still the favorite at Roland Garros, but I got the sense at the Australian Open when Sabalenka maintained her composure to close out Rybakina in three sets that she could win the Grand Slam this year. I don't use that term lightly. She has the game to do it, and if she serves well and keeps her nerve, she will be incredibly difficult to beat for anyone on any surface except for Swiatek if they meet in the final at Roland Garros.

Obviously the odds are long for anyone to do it, but I believe she clearly has the best chance of anyone since Serena.

by jazzyg On the Alcaraz topic, Cliff Drysdale predicted he would win 20-plus slams during an ESPN roundtable at Wimbledon last year before he had won any slams. I tend to agree with him. That's asking a ton, but never mind his incredible game. He has that innate quality of playing his best when it matters most time and time again, and that ability does not go away over time.

This point had me on my feet cheering at home.

Well, being that she is the one who won the slam this year, nobody else has a chance for a Grand Slam this year. So she clearly has the best chance - hard to argue ))

Apparently Iga let it be known during her trophy speech that she didn't like playing at 1a.

I think coaching won that match for Aryna. She could've done her usual and lost focus at a few key points during the match but she did it only once and that was in the second set when Swiatek leveled the set at 3 all. Instead she dragged herself right back to the game plan she and her coach worked out and when a crucial point came at 3 all in the third she held and that was when Iga blinked.

It's very rare to say a WTA match was great. If you're a tennis head you will appreciate this one.

by ponchi101 The score does not tell about the quality of the match. Some truly great points, and both kept their level, with the small dips which led to the result.
But let's remember that Madrid is seldom a good indicator for RG. I agree with the above: Iga is still the leading contender for RG. Rome will let us know better.

Do you really not get the gist of what i was posting? I'm saying Sabalenka is the only player with a chance to win the Grand Slam in any year since Serena came close and has the goods to do it. That's been the case for what, five players in my lifetime--Navratilova, Graf, Hingis (because of the lack of competition when she hit the top), Serena and now Sabalenka in my estimation. Graf succeeded. The others won three of the four. I think Sabalenka's game is on their level. We will find out if she can stay in the same good headspace she is in right now.

This is what you wanted to say maybe. But you said "this year".
In all seriousness - I don't feel that Sabalenka is at this level of domination. She is good, but not THAT good. On a given day she is vulnerable to more than one player: Swiatek, Rybakina, Kreichikova. If she wins one more slam this year - it will be a great year for her.

by ti-amie TBH I don't think any of the top WTA players have a GS in them. I'm including Sabalenka, Swiatek, Rybakina and Krejcikova in that mix. All of them need the draw to break for them because any rando can take them out on a given day due to lapses of focus/concentration/conditioning.
Sabalenka played very well today but she had no pressure on her because no one expected her to win.

Just to be clear I mean winning all four majors in a calendar year.

by ponchi101 Both finals delivered. The women's was a fine match, the men's too.
Some of Struff's volleys were downright Edberg-esque.
At 32, doubtful to see Struff making any inroads in the winners' circles. But he may be someone to avoid at RG, this year.

by ti-amie Struff made Carlitos very uncomfortable out there and for most of the second set he was reacting to what Struff was doing. In the third set you could see Carlitos calm himself down and begin to impose his will. It helped that Struff had no legs by that point. Still it was a very good match and it wasn't until Carlitos went up 4-1 in the third that it was safe to think that he'd win.

I agree about Struff. He's in Qualies in Rome and I'm sure a lot of players are hoping he's tired and crashes out early.

Two finals worthy of being finals. What is the tennis world coming to?

by ponchi101 Four players that ranked high in singles. Let's hope it becomes a regular occurrence.

by Owendonovan In the spirit of trophy moments, this made me chuckle. I'd be happy with a food processor, not the 0% crap.

Spain women's race apologizes for food processor, nonfat gifts.
MADRID -- The organizers of a women's running race in Spain apologized Monday after the winner was offered a food processor to take home, sparking accusations of sexism.
The 7-kilometer Carrera de la Mujer women's race issued a statement on Twitter saying it hadn't considered the kitchen appliance -- donated by a sponsor -- would have sexist implications.
"We apologize but we consider this a product with no sexist character and ideal for any athlete who wants to improve their nutritional habits," the statement said. "We regret if any woman felt offended."
The food processor controversy went largely unnoticed until Ángela Rodríguez Pam, Spain's secretary of state for equality, tweeted that the winner had received a food processor and others were given 0% fat products.
"If you win: housewife and if not at least you'll lose weight," Rodríguez Pam tweeted.

Yes, but why would anyone post that the person who had won the first slam was the only one who could win the slam that year when by definition that's the case? It's pretty clear I was referring to winning a slam in general, but common sense gets checked out the door too often when others are responding to posts.
