Here's what we know about the man who shot five police officers in York County, Pa.
Law enforcement confirmed that 24-year-old, Matthew J. Ruth, of Hanover shot and killed three officers Wednesday afternoon, and left two more critically wounded.

YORK, Pa. — Three police officers were killed and two others left critically wounded in a shooting in North Codorus Township in York County, Pa. on Wednesday.

The five officers who were shot were following up on a domestic-related investigation that began on Tuesday. Two other officers were left in critical condition and the gunman died at the scene.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, York County District Attorney Tim Barker identified the three fallen officers as:

Detective Sgt. Cody Becker
Detective Mark Baker
Detective Isaiah Emenheiser
Barker said that a fourth Northern York County Regional Police Department detective and a deputy sheriff from the York County Sheriff's office were shot and left critically injured.

Here's what we know about the shooter
The man who fatally shot three Pennsylvania officers and injured two before he was killed by police has been identified as 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth, according to York County District Attorney Tim Barker.

On Sept. 16, a woman reportedly observed Ruth stalking the house in a nearby cornfield, and notified authorities, according to a criminal complaint obtained by FOX43. Barker confirmed that the woman who called was the mother of Ruth's ex-girlfriend.

She told police that Ruth was clad in camouflage-colored clothing and was using binoculars to look through the window of her house. Ruth reportedly had an AR-15 rifle with a suppressor.

The incident was referred to the Northern York County Regional Police Department, who obtained an arrest warrant and a restraining order. Officials attempted to serve the Ruth with the warrant on Tuesday night but were unable to find him, Barker said.

During a follow-up visit to the ex-girlfriend's house on Wednesday, Ruth reportedly opened fire on officers.

Timeline of the incident, according to officials:
Northern York County Regional Police Department Detectives Becker, Baker and Emenheiser attempted to execute a search warrant at Ruth's residence around noon on Wednesday. Ruth was not at home, and the search of the residence was completed by 1:23 p.m.
Five Nothern York County Regional detectives then traveled to the 1800 block of Haar Road, to the home of Ruth's reported ex-girlfriend and her mother. They arrived on scene around 2:02 p.m.
Followed by Baker, Becker and a fourth detective, Emenheiser opened the door to the residence at 2:08 p.m. The fifth detective and a deputy sheriff from the York County Sheriff's Department remained outside observing the perimeter.

With the door open, Ruth — who was inside — reportedly fired multiple rounds from an AR-15 styled rifle with a suppressor. All four detectives were immediately struck and went down.
Ruth then reportedly turned his attention to the fifth detective and deputy sheriff, who were in the process of positioning themselves to return fire.
The Nothern York County Regional detective returned fire with his own rifle. Meanwhile, Ruth is said to have struck the deputy sheriff and his vehicle.
Police said Ruth then ran toward the vehicles near the roadway, at which point both the detective and deputy sheriff were firing at him.
A final exchange of gunfire ended with Ruth being killed.
The detective immediately rushed toward the house to render aid. Emenheiser, Baker and Becker were found to be non-responsive. He then ran over to the deputy sheriff and began rendering aid.
At the same time, the detective called for backup from other law enforcement.
Police said that officers arrived at the front door at 2:08 p.m. and that all shooting had stopped just over two minutes later.

Another Nothern York County Regional detective was the first to respond to the scene, arriving at 2:14 p.m.
At the request of the injured detective, the reinforcing detective placed Ruth — whose condition had not been confirmed — in handcuffs.

Numerous other law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel were then dispatched to the scene to assist.

FOX43 received confirmation at 5:20 that the York County Coroner was called to the scene.
At 6:15 p.m., Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro held a briefing at WellSpan York Hospital with Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris. It was at that time that officials confirmed that three officers from the Northern York County Regional Police Department had died in the police incident. He also confirmed that two other officers were in critical, but stable condition.

Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night, a procession including dozens of police and emergency vehicles escorted the bodies of the fallen officers to the York County Coroner's Office.

PSP and D.A. Investigation:
The Pennsylvania State Police and the York County District Attorney's Office announced they are continuing the investigation into the shooting.

York County District Attorney Tim Barker was joined by Attorney General Dave Sunday and other law enforcement officials at a press conference Thursday afternoon. Details shared during that briefing about the fallen and wounded officers can be found here.

During the briefing, officials said that investigators found Ruth's ex-girlfriend's family dog — a black Labrador — dead in the basement. Police alleged that Ruth killed the dog by shooting it.

Barker said that they are still investigating the shooter's motive and declined to speculate on "the full profile of the actor."

"There is one motive though that is clear for everything, and that is the hateful scourge of domestic violence," Barker said. "That is what brought us here. That is what brought law enforcement here."

He added that law enforcement's involvement is responsible for saving the lives of Ruth's alleged ex-girlfriend and her mother. "I can conclude by all reasonable inferences from all information without speculation — had they arrived home and not Northern Regional Police Department officers, they would have been killed immediately," Barker said.

Barker expressed his gratitude for the detective who he said fired the last shot and rendered aid to the deputy sheriff. "He saved many lives that day," Barker said. Had the shooter not been killed, Barker said "who knows where this would have stopped."

State Police said that there is no ongoing threat to the community, and that the scene remains active as officials investigate.

I know this is not sequential.
And I know this is not what this man meant.
And I know this is a non-sequitur.
But the thing is that "this" has not stopped. There will be another looney, with another AR15, in another town, and it will be REPLACE-COPY-PASTE.

And more non-sequitur. Will Tiny lower the flags?

At least two dead, eight injured in Michigan church shooting, police say

Authorities identified the suspect as Thomas Jacob Sanford, of Burton, Michigan, who was killed after police exchanged gunfire with him.

Local authorities said a 40-year-old man rammed a vehicle through the front doors of a Mormon church in Michigan’s Grand Blanc Township on Sunday, then opened fire with a rifle, killing at least two people and injuring several others.

The church, where “hundreds” of worshipers were attending service, was also set ablaze in the attack, Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said at a news conference Sunday. Ten gunshot victims were transported to local hospitals, two of whom have died, Renye said.

Authorities identified the suspect as Thomas Jacob Sanford, of Burton, Michigan, who was killed after police exchanged gunfire with him. Officials have not released a motive, but the attack prompted some major cities, including Los Angeles and New York City, to boost the security presence around places of worship “out of an abundance of caution.” The shooting in Grand Blanc also comes weeks after a shooting at a church in Minneapolis left two dead and more than a dozen wounded.

President Donald Trump on Truth Social said he has been briefed on the incident in Grand Blanc, and — although law enforcement officials have not yet identified a motive — said “this appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”

Pictures from the scene in Grand Blanc showed the church engulfed in smoke and flames late Sunday morning, though the blaze has since been contained. “We do believe we will find additional victims once we have that scene secure,” Renye said of the burned building.

The attack started at about 10:25 a.m., when the suspect drove into the church, exited the vehicle and fired “several rounds” at people in the church, Renye said. He added that two law enforcement officers “neutralized” the suspect after arriving on scene.

When the officers arrived, the church was already on fire, which authorities believe was “deliberately set” by the suspect, Renye said.

Officials will execute search warrants on the suspect’s residence and comb through their cellphone records as they search for a motive, Renye said.

Another news conference is expected to be held by authorities Sunday night.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said agents from the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are on their way to Grand Blanc. Local authorities said more than 100 FBI agents will be devoted to the case.

“Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling,” Bondi said on X.

The city of Grand Blanc, just outside of Flint, is roughly 60 miles north of Detroit, with a population of about 8,000. The surrounding Grand Blanc Township, which encompasses 36 square miles around the city, is home to nearly 40,000 people in southeast Genesee County.

“We are a very cohesive community. This sort of thing is painful for our entire community,” John Creasey, mayor of the city of Grand Blanc, said in an email. “I’m struggling to digest all that has happened, and my heart goes out to all of the affected families.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township neighbors a Jehovah’s Witness church in a residential neighborhood. The incident comes after Russell M. Nelson, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, died at his home in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

“My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc close.”

The Misogynistic Abuse Towards Rory McIlroy’s Wife at the Ryder Cup Is Deeper Than Golf
It shows a cultural shift, one in which men feel emboldened to attack women in public without shame or consequence.

If you need more evidence that our culture is becoming more misogynistic in 2025, just look at Rory McIlroy’s wife’s Ryder Cup experience.

Erica Stoll, who has been married to the Irish golf champion since 2017, has been getting an increasingly hateful torrent of online abuse for more than a year. Now the 38-year-old, who has a five-year-old daughter with McIlroy, is facing the same vitriol in real life.

At the Ryder Cup over the weekend, Stoll was subjected to the following: had a beer thrown at her head, was taunted with barbs about her brief 2024 split from her husband, and had to listen to fans chant the name of a woman who, some fans online claim without proof, had a relationship with McIlroy at some point around their breakup.

The abuse and taunts were so unrelenting that Stoll was spotted with “tears streaming down her face” and was comforted by her husband in front of fans on the green. After the tournament, the golf champion railed against what he called “unacceptable abuse” he and his wife faced.

“Look, I don’t think we should ever accept that in golf,” he said at a press conference. “I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week.”

While some national news outlets in the US have been referring to the fans’ behavior euphemistically, as ”raucous“ or “unruly,” let’s call a spade a spade: The behavior was pure misogynistic abuse, and it’s a growing movement in American culture right now.

Women in the US are facing increasing levels of misogyny from men both online and off, and it’s not hard to see why. Encouraged by a manosphere that’s made patriarchal bullying seem cool and a White House that houses a cabinet made up of men who have degraded women and rolled back decades of protections for us in the workplace, men have never felt more emboldened to attack us both on and offline, and it’s getting worse.

Women who date or are married to athletes, a.k.a. WAGs, are interestingly serving as a canary in the coal mine for this phenomenon. Sports traditionally are considered male-dominated spaces, where men are both the stars and the main consumers. To some, WAGs are meant to be on the sidelines, simply there to support their partners and be seen and not heard (though many are changing this narrative).

If women do outshine their partner while supporting him, they often face backlash, as has been the case with Taylor Swift. Swift, who is now engaged to Travis Kelce, faced her own wave of misogynistic abuse when the camera focused “too much” on her as she watched Kelce play in the early days of their relationship in 2023. It was apparently lost on the male football fans what a boon Swift’s presence at games was for both the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL, and the hate got so bad the pop star began frowning and covering her face whenever the camera swung her way.

This all culminated in a shocking display during February’s Super Bowl 2025, when Swift was briefly shown on the Jumbotron in the stadium. As the camera flashed to her, the stadium erupted in boos and heckling, visibly disturbing Swift as she listened to the ire. She’s now been reportedly hiding her entrances into the games.

But the behavior by “fans” at the Ryder Cup this weekend shows how much worse it’s gotten. Stoll, who is not a public figure, gives no interviews, and mostly keeps to herself, and she has been targeted by months of misogynistic rhetoric simply because she and her husband briefly split in 2024. They reconciled a month later, with McIlroy saying in a statement that “thankfully, we have resolved our differences.”

For some, the bump in the couple’s marital road meant, apparently, that Stoll was fair game. During the Masters earlier this year, which McIlroy won, heaps of speculation and innuendo were placed on Stoll, as if she needed to answer for whatever discord occurred between the two of them. Online commenters picked apart her clothes, her facial expressions, and her body language, examining her for any proof she was not a good-enough wife.

But the hate faced by Rory McIlroy’s wife at the Ryder Cup was a big escalation from the online chatter, and it should concern us all. The fact that a woman who has done nothing but support her husband silently from the sidelines is being abused both verbally and physically by men at a sporting event shows how hate against women, both famous and not, is rapidly escalating.

The actions against Stoll are not an isolated incident. They show a cultural shift, one in which men feel emboldened to attack women in public, without shame or consequence. In which a woman is being judged not by her own merits, but by her perceived value as a “good-enough” wife to a powerful man. And in which, it seems, there’s nothing she can do but try to get through it.

Asked about how his wife was doing after the tournament, McIlroy said Stoll had made it through, because she’s a “very, very strong woman.”

“You know, she handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has,” he said. “I love her, and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.”

It’s lovely that Stoll is strong and can make it through the weekend with her head held high. But she shouldn’t have to. Neither should any woman, but increasingly, we must.

I've read quite a bit about the Ryder Cup behavior in the past few days. This is the first time Erica Stoll was mentioned in any piece I read. That's misogyny, too. Until this piece, she and what she endured was apparently not worth a mention. And most of what I read was from the NY Times and its affiliates. I expect better.
