I know very few care about her so I assume that's why she's able to fly under the radar the way she has been, but Yastremska's results pre and post suspension are night and day. Most with overturned suspensions return to previous form and she most certainly has not. Kudos on the creative defense, but the few people who bought that must be wondering now why they ever did.

So completely out of my mind that I had not even noticed she had been gone. And returned.
Not that I mind either way. Txs for noticing.

And, BTW. Leylah lost today to a 15 yo ranked 194 (well, too young to be ranked much higher). She is actually ranked so low her BIO page in the WTA website is empty.
That 2021 USO final will go down as perhaps the most extreme example of a Black Swan in tennis, or even all sports. Leylah has done better than Emma, but she has also failed to gain any traction from that good run.

Grabher replaced Raducanu in the draw after the latter withdrew at the last minute.

Not making excuses for Leylah, she probably should've won against the very young player, but this is a loss that might not look so bad in a few years. This event is now owned by IMG, which means this player is going to be a wild card entry, meaning she's an IMG repped player. It's how they work with few exceptions. They rarely rep nobodies so she's likely a hot prospect to keep an eye on in the future. They have had plenty of busts, but the potential is there just about every time, many times with good to great junior results. The exception to this rule, besides veteran players returning from injury, is if it is her sister that is the really talented player and they are just doing a favor by giving her a wild card. Given her win over Leylah, I'm thinking that's not the case here and they think both sisters have top tier talent, in the same vein as the Fruhvirtova sisters.

I think Fernandez has returned to the ranking/results that were expected. She had a good run at that US Open, but it's hard to replicate that run all the time when you're winning matches tight matches in 3 sets.

Still early, and I am covering my tracks by the use of "perhaps". Right now, it seems like that final was a fluke, but both players are still very young. Again, making conclusions after that final ("Emma will become a dominant force in the next years, Leylah has Slam champion written all over her") was a risky proposition. Making the opposite claims right now is not without peril, either.

Leylah is still out there fighting. Raducanu seems to be the one who isn't willing to put in the work to try and top an elite athlete.

I wonder about the impact of all the injuries. It has to be discouraging.

The loss ended up not looking so bad in a few days (one, actually). Andreeva took out Haddad Maia, seeded 13, so maybe this girl can play more than what her ranking right now says.

Andreeva reached the final of the junior Australian Open this year and won two ITF $60K tournaments on clay in April, including a win over Podoroska who reached the FO semifinals a few years ago. She's won six ITF titles overall and is 13-0 in ITF wins this year. She'll be 16 on Sunday.
