Wrong Cerundolo...there are two in the draw (Fernando and Juan Manuel), so I'm guessing brothers?
by ponchi101 Meanwhile, somewhere in Belgrade:

Maybe Hurkacz can give him a bit of a workout?
by JTContinental Biggest upset alert for me is Hanfmann over Fritz, who hasn't been very good on grass this year.

Guess right. Fran y JuanMa. Francisco is the top tanked Argentinean at the moment, and also top ranked Latin American.

Hanfmann just got me a lot of points for GA, but he just lost to Mannarino. And if you can be beaten by Mannarino, you can be beaten by anybody.
Still, I am with you, The way Fritz is playing, he will be glad he did not get any points last year.

Mannarino beat Fritz last week.
by ponchi101 I know. I have written about Mannarino before. He HAS TO BE the greatest overachiever in the history of the sport. With that game, he wins a lot.

by dave g Does anyone know which half of the men's draw will play on Day 1? I think it is the top half, but I am not certain.
by ponchi101 I think that for the men's, it will be the bottom half because the defending champion opens Centre Court.
by jazzyg There is a weird discrimination against flat ball hitters like Mannarino. I do not consider him an overachiever. I consider him a player who would have had a much better career if more tournaments were played on grass, which favors flat ball hitters, and fewer were played on clay, which favors one-dimensional extreme western forehand grips.
He has been really good on grass his whole career, although he tends to struggle at Wimbledon because his game holds up better over three sets than five.
by ponchi101 I am not discriminating. I admire the man. We should all strive to play tennis like him: the compactness of the strokes, the precise movement, the control.
He never goes for a winner from a wrong position but, at the pro level, he is underpowered. That he reached a career high of 22 is a testament that this sport can be played by thinking, not just blasting the ball.
And sure. Had he been born in the 60's, he would have been a Pancho Segura: control, finesse, consistency. Although I don't know if with the faster grass of those days the results would have been the same.

by ashkor87 Beretitni vs Sonego? Sonego has a good record against him but can he play on grass? Berettini's monster serve may be enough? I really don't know how good Sonego is- I guess we will soon know .
by ponchi101 Some people have taken Berrettini as a member of their YCWJ team. I say that is not a bad move.
It is not that Sonego may be better or worse, it is that Berrettini has been injured for too long and has played very little. Sure, he has a better serve but, right now, stroke by stroke, who do you take? And I say Sonego is a better mover at the moment.
On the modern slow grass courts, Berrettini's serve counts for a bit of an advantage. But all other items point at Sonego.
by ti-amie SUN 02 JUL 2023 22:08 BST Nick Kyrgios Withdraws from Wimbledon 2023
2022 finalist forced to pull out of The Championships
Nick Kyrgios, last year's gentlemen's singles finalist, has been forced to withdraw from this year's Championships with a wrist injury.
In a post on his Instagram, the Australian wrote "I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year.
"I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca.
"As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.
"I’ll be back, and as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans."
Kyrgios had been due to face wild card David Goffin on No.1 Court in the first round.

by ashkor87 Kyrgios injury is not surprising...his forehand is so 'slappy', so wristy, it is guaranteed to happen sooner or later
by ponchi101 I felt the opposite. He was so loose, and his strokes are so elastic, that I felt he would not have these sort of injuries.
Monfils sustains your theory, though.
by skatingfan I think Kyrgios' lack of consistent training is what leads to these types of injuries.

by Suliso About 60% chance of SF's being Djokovic vs Sinner and Alcaraz vs Tsitsipas.
by ponchi101 Why Tsitsipas? He goes against Medvedev next. H2H is 8-4 Daniil, and it is not as if Stefanos is more at ease on grass.
by jazzyg Tsitsipas has won four of the last seven against Medvedev, and I do think his game is more suited for grass than Medvedev's. Toss-up match.
by ponchi101 Toss up match, ok. I can go for that.
They have never played on grass, so that is an unknown. But I say that will be a very even match. I went with Tsitsipas today because I am counting on Daniil for the QF's, but that is my wishful thiking.

Great pick
by ponchi101 Somewhere in the SP topics, somebody mentioned that 6 months ago it was impossible to believe that Eubanks would be a bandwagon in the SP. And then added, correctly, that we would also pick him early.
His BH passing shot to break Stefanos again was a sublime one hander; the stuff of dreams for us that hit that shot.
by Suliso Sabalenka showing no signs of being "psychologically damaged" from RG. I think Iga will have a tough time holding her off for #1.
by ponchi101 I know we are all for equality in this forum, but this is the MEN'S topic
by Suliso Oh, missed that
by ti-amie If I were betting I would've placed a very small wager on Eubanks today only because of those first three days where Stefanos played back to back to back long matches. He was bound to hit the proverbial wall at some point. I was surprised that no one talked about how that would affect his play.
Anyway Carlitos just took out Berrettini and will face Rune next.
by ti-amie
by ti-amie
Rune's entire entourage stood up applauding before he closed out the match led by his mother. I thought it was bush league and Grigor did too. He just didn't have enough left to push back hard but he did delay the inevitable by a game.
He learned fast *within* this match. His approach totally changed after the first set and I think what he learned is going to help him win a ton more matches like this going forward
