by skatingfan Wimbledon forecast calling for more rain tomorrow morning.

by ashkor87 Really can't see how Svitolina can beat Vika..Vika is a tier 1 player, svitolina is not...much as i like her, i cant see what is so special about Svitolina's game...how does she keep winning?

by ashkor87 Quite amazing we are almost into week2 and no real big upsets! Never happened before, I think...wonder why

by Suliso Azarenka long since not "tier 1" so I can easily see her beaten by Svitolina. Not saying it will happen for sure, but either outcome would be no surprise to me.

by ashkor87 TRUE..

by mick1303 Both Svitolina and Azarenka are not blessed with top notch pure ball-striking talent (of course relatively to the VERY best). So they have to rely on consistency/depth/pace combination of strengths. And if all those 3 components are clicking, they can frequently overwhelm just about anybody (including more talented ball-strikers). When it was all in order for Azarenka, she reached #1 and stayed there for a while. But this combo is very demanding both on the body and on the mind (requires heightened concentration). At her peak Azarenka had higher ceiling than Svitolina. But Svitolina is no slouch either, she had several Tier I titles and YEC to her credit. The question is - how much are they removed from their peak forms.

by ashkor87 Vondrousova leads Bouzkova 2 -1 head to head, and her elo is 150 points higher..which means...? Let us see!

Their grass elo is almost exactly the same...and rankings are pretty equal too..

by JTContinental Despite all those numbers, Bouzkova is cleaning her clock.

by Suliso Not anymore...

I consider Kenin over Gauff a big upset. People can say they weren't surprised, but talk is cheap. Gauff made the quarters of RG and lost only to Iga, and semi'd Eastbourne with Iga-like scorelines, while Kenin has lost to Margaux Rouvouy, Sofia Kartal, and Wickmayer, Zavanska in the last few months. Gauff beat Kenin by a routine scoreline in January. It was a big upset in my book.

Suliso wrote: Sun Jul 09, 2023 11:36 amNot anymore...
Vondrousova was more aggressive when it counted. Bouzkova didn't haver the power (or the guts, not sure which) to push Vondrousova when she had the chance in points. Played it too safely IMO.

by skatingfan Tiafoe about to crash out to Dimitrov winning only seven games.

by meganfernandez Does Andreeva's accent sound French to anyone else? Has she trained in France since she was young?

She was charming and sweet in her on-court interview. About her calm play, she said she couldn't show any emotions because she was out of breath after every point. And she mentioned her little crush on Murray in a cute way. Just 16. Gauff was 15 when she made her run in 2019.

Is Foe still on the come up? I can't keep track.

by patrick In my opinion, no.

by mick1303 On Andreeva: sometimes when you that young, pressure just does not affect you, because you can't comprehend it yet. Not to insult her, because she may turn out to be quite bright, but "ignorance is a bliss". 16 yo Sharapova did not feel any pressure dispatching Serena in that 2004 Wimbledon. Once she got older and realized the enormity of the occasion, it became 10 times harder.

Yes, TRUE. In String Theory, which, again, I recommend to everyone, a similar pointll is made about Tracy...

I do not agree, of course..my rating of Kenin is higher than of Coco..I mean, Kenin is close to tier 1, Coco isnt even top of tier 2.

Because, after we analyze all the strokes, and the footwork, and the strategies, Svitolina is one of those players that have mastered the simplest requirement of them all: KEEP THE BALL IN THE COURT.
We love to talk about the great strokes, the "Roger's FH", "Novak's BH". Sure, they are great strokes. But Laconte's FH was a beauty, yet it landed out with frequency.
You can win, and win big, in this sport by simply keeping the ball in. Ask Borg, or ask Novak, who has mastered one very simple concept: keep it IN and DEEP.
Svitolina does a lot of that (not at the same level, of course) but that will always make you competitive.

by ponchi101 Meanwhile. Galan is giving Sinner a very competitive match. He does move well on grass.

Agree..but is that enough to win a major? Yes, everyone doesn't have to, and I fully agree such B level players are very valuable..I have called such players the 'life blood' of the game, so no disrespect...

by ponchi101 I thought you were only talking about winning, not winning MAJORS. Svitolina will not do that; she lacks the weapons.
But that she has had a very fine career is, to me, beyond discussion. She has won big tournaments and has been a highly ranked player. All you can ask from that game.

by ashkor87 Certainly, yes.

by Suliso Indeed, the point I was making is that she's capable of beating Azarenka despite h2h. I'd never pick her as a potential Wimbledon champion. There are at least 5 players left in the draw with a significantly better shot.

by ponchi101 Off topic here.
Belinda is no longer signed with Nike; I find that surprising. She is very popular and is still the #1 player in Switzerland.
Together with Rybakina's departure from Adidas, are the big names (Nike and Adidas) letting go of some players? Or are the smaller brands investing more?

by ponchi101 And with 2 match points in hand, Belinda goes on to lose 11 of the next 13 points, and the set, on a DF. What a mess.

by Suliso I wish she could have taken this golden opportunity...

Meanwhile Svitolina a break up in the decider over Azarenka.

by ponchi101 Azarenka/Svitolina ended up being a great match.

by Suliso Svitolina takes it 11/9!

by mick1303 Warm congratulations to Elina! Kharkov is rooting for its daughter.

by skatingfan Hurkacz just choked that set away - 6-3 lead, and he dumped four shots in the net, and one long to lose 5 points in a row.

by ti-amie Suliso had it right when he said Svitolina could beat Azarenka despite the 5-0 H2H in favor of Vika. Someone on #wimbledon #tennis Mastodon made the point that unlike other new mother's who return to play Svitolina seems to have come back a better player. If you can catch a replay I don't remember the old Elina staying that focused and aggressive, not to mention smart, during an entire match. She used to do what Bencic did today play a tough two sets (or one) and go on walkabout in the second or third set depending on the circumstances. I wouldn't pick her to win it all but she's playing the way a lot of us thought she was capable of back in the day.

As for Iga vs Belinda, Bencic needed to win it in two. Once it went to three I switched to the Azarenka/Svitolina match.

It's rare for the WTA to have two riveting matches playing at the same time. I thought it was a good afternoon/evening of tennis.

by ponchi101 I also feel Elina is hitting harder than before.

by ti-amie

The comment was kind of tacky and unnecessary no?

With Djokovic leading Hurkacz, 7-6 7-6, play is suspended for the night due to the #Wimbledon curfew.

by skatingfan I think Boulter/De Minaur is the tennis pairing we need right now.

by skatingfan This match could easily be 2-0 for Hurkacz. I think the 3rd set tomorrow will be quick.

by ponchi101 Good for Vika. This is no longer, in any way, a controversy or a story. The Ukrainians will not shake hands with the Russians/Belarusians, and let's move on.

by jazzyg Svitolina used to hit hard but she stopped doing it for a long time. I remember watching her win Toronto in 2017 when she obliterated Halep 6-1, 6-1 in the semis and Wozniacki 6-4, 6-0 in the final after routing Venus 6-2, 6-1 in an earlier round and thinking there was no way Halep could ever beat her on a hard court. I then declared the fourth-round match at the US Open between Svitolina and Keys the de facto final and thought I was right after Keys won in three sets all the way up until Stephens eviscerated her in the final.

But I've never seen Svitolina play with as much aggression since that Toronto tournament. I understand she was not beating power players in Halep and Wozniacki, but she was the aggressor on every point in those matches and was so defensive in almost every match I saw her play in the following years, never looking like a slam contender even when she reached a couple of semis. I did not see any of the WTA year-end event she won, so I don't know how she played there.

Today was a travel day for me so I missed all of the Swiatek-Bencic match (sorry Bencic lost because this was a huge opportunity for her to fulfill her potential but she came up short again) and the Svitolina-Azarenka match (very happy Svitolina won). Seems like they might have been the most dramatic of the tournament. Got to my destination just in time to see Djokovic win the second-set tiebreak against Hurkacz in apparently almost an exact replica of his first-set tiebreak win.

by ponchi101 It is like Novak is doing nothing. Keep the ball deep. Move the other guy a bit here, a bit there. The economy of his game is borderline ridiculous.
He simply knows he can't be beat.
And I am saying this with the utmost respect.

by jazzyg An in-form Sinner can beat him if he plays like this, but after last year, I assume Djokovic knows he would have to play more aggressively if they meet in the semis.

You have to think Sinner learned something from what happened in the final three sets last year.

Allowing Hurkacz to self destruct is a very good strategy in this match.
