by ponchi101 ESPN has a promotion about how much they do for women in sports. How much they help them advance in sports.
In the meantime, Muchova/Wang are playing an actual match and they are showing the talking heads talking about Medvedev/Baez, tonight's matches, the demise of the entire Argie brigade, and anything except show real women's tennis.
Like, you know? Show a women's match that does not involve Iga? (expletive) that!

by ponchi101 The newest Karo moves on.
With Elena not being able to gain any traction, she is becoming my fave. Love the game and love the demeanor.

by nelslus BEN!!!!!!!!!!!! (SO glad to be wrong!!)

TAYLOR AND LEYLAH!!!!!!!

by jazzyg Bencic was truly awful today, but Cirstea is playing slam-contending caliber tennis in this tournament. She was terrific against Rybakina as well and now she is into her first slam quarterfinal in 14 years.

I would not bet against her beating Muchova, although I don't know whether she can handle the slices and net game. She also got very tight at the end of today's match even though Bencic wasn't doing anything. She would have lost to Rybakina if she had been similarly nervous.

by Suliso Cirstea was a promising teenager the last and only time she reached a GS QF's (2009 RG). I'll be rooting for her vs Muchova.

by nelslus LOL. SO, Cirstea was up 6-3, 4-1, 40-0- and managed to break herself. Next time she served- she broke herself, albeit, to be fair, more simply. Fortunately- Bencic couldn't hold her serve, either. 3 & 3 win. I believe that Craybas and her fellow commentator mentioned something about a Bencic ankle sprain during the match? I only saw that last few games. NOT pretty. Nevertheless- the first US Open QF for Cirstea- and her second singles Slam QF at 33.

by JTContinental Lol at “Big D!ck Energy” playing on the PA in between sets of the Coco/Caro match

by ti-amie Caro was up 2-0 in the first set and only won one more game, losing it to Cori 6-3.

Ridiculous.

I can vouch for that, sometimes, the lights at the US Open do come on earlier than you'd think. Has favoritism been a factor with tennis? Sure- and, guess what Caroline? You've been shown plenty of favoritism throughout your career. The Open doesn't have some magic Coco button they can push to make things better for her.

by jazzyg Gojo just double faulted five times in one game, and neither ESPN announcer had any clue about it. In fact, Gilbert said after the third double fault that he needed to start taking more risks on his second serve.

Strange.

by skatingfan I've never seen Swiatek give up on a match like she did in the 3rd set against Ostapenko.

by nelslus ALL props to Ostapenko- who was in an incredible purple patch those last two sets. When she is on- she is very, very scary.

BUT- and I'm gonna go hard on this- that was pathetic from Iga. With her 507-person support team- they couldn't come up with some kind of plan against an opponent who has a 3-0 record against you? Figure it out.

With big Slam matches on the line- where are the freakin' players who are going to try everything in their arsenal to turn matches around? Right now, IMO, there are two players who you just can never say they're done until the last point at a Slam- Novak and Carlos. And, I'm not at all sure Carlos will even make the final this year, much less win. (He IS 20, But, at least you know he's going to try his damndest.

I totally get that is is very tough out their being under a world-side internet microscope- especially for the women players. Everyone puts these players under a lot of pressure. But- I just want to see big matches where folks fight their guts out. And problem solve. Where you don't have so much "parity" where players remain in the top 10 even with seemingly zero chances of winning any Slam title- or, in some cases, win few to zero Slam matches. It's exhausting to watch players freeze and run out of options so quickly. I mean, you ARE also winning millions of dollars when you're high in the rankings. Find SOME joy there. I just wish tennis didn't feel like such a chore for so many players.

I disagree with you a bit here. There was no strategy for this match because Ostapenko just played one of her matches. Crush the ball and when it comes back, crush the ball again but harder. There is no strategy against that.

I don't care who you are playing. Absolutely, Ostapenko was playing great tennis. But, if no strategies could ever work, then Ostapenko would win every match. There are always strategy options. I mean- try to find ways to extend the rallies and see if Ostapenko would start coughing up errors (which we've all seen plenty of times), come to the net more, slicing, serving and volleying, moving Ostapenko as much as you can....Certainly, "make an effort" and "stop looking like a deer caught in the headlights" would have been worth trying for Iga.

AND- hey, forget the youngsters- get a taste of the life for most 60-somethings. :gorgeous:

She's #1. At least try something. I do love the Navratilova in the looking glass comparison.

by ti-amie Iga is too used to being allowed to do whatever she wants during a match. I've said it before: many of the WTA players play a similar style and it doesn't involve taking Iga out of her comfort zone. Ostapenko doesn't care who you are or what your rank is she is going to come out there and jack up your day.

Ironically a lot of what nelslus said about disrupting Penko's game can be said about Iga. Move her around, don't let her get into her preferred rhythm, slow things down, make it clear you will hit her if necessary. Guaranteed Iga, and Penko, will wilt.

This is why on court coaching has destroyed the sport, in my opinion. None of the 507 could do anything because they're so used to not having to do anything. A #1 with the winning streak she had, should be able to mentally adjust and at least try something different even if it doesn't end up working.

Coaching has only been around for a year, legal coaching at least, and the first 3 Ostapenko losses were 2019, 2020, and early 2022. Swiatek's issue is that she doesn't have a plan B not because she can't think of a plan B.
