by dave g Day 1 Pick Commentary

Certain Death
We have picks on both sides of this match CAZAUX, Arthur FRA vs CARRENO BUSTA, Pablo ESP

Good Picks: should win but not make it past the third round
Popyrin, Berrettini, Monfils, Cerundolo, Struff, Rinderknech, Bublik, Tiafoe, Griekspoor, Cerundolo, Baez

Also good picks: should win, but the match might be tough
Davidovich Fokina, Humbert, Bautista Agut

Might be too soon, this player will probably make it to the fourth round, so you might want to be able to use them later
Ruud, Dimitrov, Fritz, Rublev, Shelton

You might be in trouble
Echeverry, Kemanovic

I don't know enough about the player or his opponent to make a prediction.
Carballes Baena, Martinez

You picked a wildcard. I will assume you know the player better than me
Muller

by ponchi101 I was the Shelton picker. Indeed, it is soon, but I just can't stand losing on day 1.
I expect him to reach 4R against Djokovic. And, if I am still alive and he makes it to the semis, I will be delighted.

by GlennHarman I’m in another of my remote-in-the-woods weeks. I’m not sure when I’ll have WiFi again, so I made a day 2 pick. My day 1 pick of Musetti is still playing, and he is not in your picks’ summary list, but I am assuming it was a legal pick…he is my pick on your list of people’s picks. If he wins, a day 2 pick was made. GH

I am responding for Dave, and he makes the final call and all these issues.
But your Musetti pick is well recorded and easy to find. You should have no issues there.
Hope your wi-fi connection will be good enough for a day 3 pick (if you are alive. And I mean in the pool ;) ).

Oops. Musetti was on my paper list of picks, but I managed to skip him while typing the list into the post. You are fine, because he won.

by naughtyT Some of those "good picks" turned out to be somewhat "Curate's egg" in nature.

by GlennHarman Thanks, until Thursday I am fine for WiFi it appears. But if I’m still in this after that I don’t know. Right now I’m in eastern Quebec, but will be in western Labrador starting mid-day Thursday…likely nothing for several days. I’ll have one of those satellite phones they give out for free, for use only in emergency, but usually no cell phone, but I’ll see if the Labrador City signal is available at times….it could be. GH

For years my round 1 SP rule was find a Canadian to pick against. May have to bring it back. Funny that combined Canadian men and women went 1-4, and the only one winning was ... Gabriel Diallo?

I didn't even know about Diallo. I thought Canadians were 0-4. Diallo played college tennis. That might be my new rule. College-player qualifiers only in R1.

So sad about Canada when you think where this group was 5, 6 years ago. Leylah is still only 21. She has time. Andreescu's level was there but her body wasn't.

LOL. YE of little faith!

DOWN 2 sets, down 0-3 in the third, almost 0-4.....Mitchell Krueger, thank GOODNESS, remembers that he is, indeed, still Mitchell Krueger....AND Lehecka wins this damned thing, 7-5 in the fifth. :bananas:

LOL, HUSH!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I have said so many times about other matches....one of the insanities of this contest is, I otherwise would have been rooting Krueger on. And, of course I feel terrible for the guy. This would have been such a great and much needed result for him.

Nevertheless, we ARE talking about the possibility of a new shiny imaginary trophy. SO, tough luck, bub. :gorgeous:

Probably a good pick (players who should win this round, but lose in round 3): Draper, Mesnik, Fils, Cobolli

Might be a little early, but there should be enough other players that will win Round 3, but lose Round 4, that you should be OK: Korda, Paul, De Minaur

I don't know enough about Belluci to comment.

Goffin: I hope you are right, but he hasn't gotten back to the level he had before he hurt his foot. I expect this to be a very tough match.

by dave g Day 5 Pick Commentary

I am usually out of the pool by now, so feel free to take my commentary with several grains of salt.

Certain death: we have picks on both sides of the Nakashima vs Musetti match. I have no clue who is going to win. If I had to make a bet, I would probably bet on Nakashima.

Then we have the "who is going to win the next round match" questions: Ruud vs Fritz and Rublev vs Dimitrov. I don't like the idea of having to pick from either of those matches. However, picking one of these four should get you to the next round, where you can fret over your next choice.

Zverev. Do I trust Zverev to win his Round 4 and Round 5 matches? No. So, is this the last round that I would feel comfortable about picking Zverev? Probably. So, this might be a really good pick, only time will tell.

by texasniteowl Well, Ruud made me nervous, but I didn't want to pick Nakashima/Musetti and thought Fritz and Dimitrov too early, and Rublev screwed me earlier this year, so Ruud was the only choice I was willing to make! Finally survived at least!

It was a tough day of picking for sure... and lots of changes in chances with Djerko and Alcaraz both out.

by nelslus ....OK, I am going to put this out there, and prepare myself for the understandable venom sure to come my way....I am, as many of us are, going with Tommy Paul as my pick for tomorrow. See- and trust me, I love winning imaginary trophies- I am seriously hoping that we all lose. I am a new fan of Diallo. He won the tournament in Chicago, and I really like his game. I hope he will end up with a terrific career.

Still, contest-wise, I must turn my back on Diallo.

I watched Diallo play twice during qualifying and have watched some of his main draw matches on TV. He is an exciting player to watch. But I would not pick him to beat Paul today either, although I would be happy if he did since I am not one of the Paul pickers today.

by ponchi101 I decided Paul will beat Gaillo, but has a good chance against Sinner. So I switched to Machac.
And I won't mind if Gaillo beats Paul. Seems like a very nice player.

Another very good day!

by dave g Day 6 Pick Commentary

Certain Death: We have a single pick on both sides of Borges vs Mensik. Both are trying to save as many options for later as they can.

Paul: assuming that he beats Diallo and loses to Sinner. One of the best options for today.

Machac: Another attempt to save as many options for later. I think this will work.

Draper: While I think Draper will win today, some of your future picks are going to be nerve-racking. But so will everybody else's picks.

Arnaldi: Maybe

De Minaur: Your future picks are probably the most nerve-racking around.

by ashkor87 Footspeed matters a lot on this fast court, and Paul is one if the quickest

by texasniteowl It's a long way from over, but Paul just lost the first set to Diallo in a tiebreak.

by ashkor87 I don't think Paul has much chance against Sinner..good player but hardly in Sinner's class..

Apparently not, and I feel like an absolute tool for letting myself believe there's such a thing as a relatively safe Frenchie :bang:
And here I thought the frenchie rule only applied to the French Open. 🤦‍♀️
Worldwide phenomenon

by ashkor87 Yes, sometimes one gets it wrong but that is what this forum is about nestcepas? Djokovic served very poorly, can happen, partly because he has dumped Ivanisevic..Alcaraz was always going to be shaky after that performance in Cincy..clearly not tuned up yet.
Sinner..nothing wrong with him at all ...if that doping thing was going to affect him, he would have been gone by now

by ponchi101 Sure.
And I think that Paul has a reasonable good chance. He is a better player than anybody Sinner has faces so far. Which is an obvious statement.
And will have the crowd behind him.

by ponchi101 This has got to be the day with the lowest death rate ever.
Nobody on the women's.
Two on the men's.
Good job, TAT.

We are approaching crunch time. We have four matches and six picks.

We have picks on both sides of Rublev vs Dimitrov and Tiafoe vs Popyrin.

Then we have people picking Fritz over a higher seeded player, and people picking Zverev, assuming that they won't need the highest seeded player in this half latter in the draw.

This half of the draw has gotten really tough. Good luck people!

by ponchi101 And that Rublev bandwagon is heading to a frigging Gulag, at the bottom of an abyss.
It was a good run.

....not done yet, Rublev takes set three.

by ponchi101 Rublev already came down from 0-2 once in the tournament.
And he is no Tommy Robredo. ;)

...he just might be!!! Rublev takes set four.....we are going the distance.

by ponchi101 And... he didn't.
Too much of a burden for Andrei. Carrying all these people on his back.
See you at the lounge

by texasniteowl I took Fritz today.

I honestly wasn't sure which way Rublev/Dimitrov would go and Rublev screwed me earlier this year so I wasn't going to pick him anyway. (And Ruud didn't look great to me in previous match.)

by ponchi101 I had to decide from which one of those two matches to pick. I thought they were going to be very close.
The Popyrin/Tiafoe match was also too close to call, but I think that the winner from there will beat Grigor (or Andrei). So, I could not pick from it.

by weefunk I wanted to pick Dimitrov, as I did think he would win. But I chickened out and went with Zverev. Even if he wins, it will hurt me in a couple of days.

by naughtyT Barney Rublev strikes again!

by naughtyT We're at "squeaky bum time" as Sir Alex Ferguson used to call it. Very tough now.

by ashkor87 I actually think it is easier now, fewer unknowns..so long as we haven't used up the good picks ...

The picks that are most likely to win today, but lose in the quarterfinals are Draper and Medvedev. So, those pickers are looking good.

The De Minaur pickers and especially the Sinner picker are likely to run out of picks before the end of the tournament. Unless, Medvedev defeats Sinner next round, in which your pick will look brilliant.

Another way to look at it is - the nature of the game is now different, looking ahead and conserving good picks is the main thing now..I have been playing safe, which has kept me alive
But will not any more.

by ponchi101 You can play it safe for two rounds. I picked Shelton on day 1, hoping he would be defeated by Novak down the line.
Well, neither made it. But it was a safe pick on day 1.
But by R3, you need to start imagining scenarios in which your picks last exactly as you think. That was the reason I picked Rublev; I felt that the winner of that match would lose to the winner of Popyrin/Tiafoe, and I thought Tiafoe would win that one. Too bad I was only half right.

by ashkor87 I haven't taken the slightest risk thus far..today is the first day
