ETA: The only way to see the entry lists right now is to hotlink to a site, a no-no from way back in the day. This is the best I could do for now.

In what way? Just because the tournament starts in a week you think we should know whose playing in it? This seems normal for the WTA.

It is normal for the WTA and it's stupid. The same site I use to get all the ATP entry lists used to provide the WTA lists until they cut off access to their information. I really don't understand how the WTA functions in the modern world.
by mmmm8 I would blame it on lack of resources / potential incompetence than any actual WTA decision.

Incompetence is where I would put my money. In the information age, where we expect to have information at our finger tips to not have something as basic as a player list available to promote an event that is upcoming is incompetent.
by ashkor87 As I noted on the Rankings board, why would Swiatek play here? She has already gotten the most points she can out of the 'non-combined' group of Wuha/Doha/Dubai.. I frankly dont understand WTA's strategy here... Paolini isnt playing, she has also maxed out by winning Dubai.
Unless I am not understanding how WTA computes ranking...

maybe the WTA considers the one from the 'non-combned' to be mandatory, the other 'non-combined' are optional.. can count in addition? Then it would make sense for Swiatek and Paolini to play Wuhan.

How do you know Paolini isn't playing? She's on the list on the tournament website.
by JTContinental I doubt severely that any of these players are doing that kind of rankings math. I think ranking takes a back seat to fame and prize money.
by ashkor87 Sad to see Collins is not playing...would have been practically her last...we will miss her- a solid and professional player who got the most out of her talents. Such players are necessary for the game to survive and thrive, they should be celebrated

by ashkor87 watched a bit of BHM against Keys.. BHM coming forward fearlessly to the net tends to turn the point into an unruly scramble, an interesting way to disrupt the opponents's rhythm, if nothing else! it worked well for her here..
by ashkor87 Of course, Keys is a good volleyer too but she didn't risk everything by charging the net, the way BHM did.
by ashkor87 It is unusual to see two tournaments, of equal weight, one after the other, and conditions so similar...IW and Miami aren't quite the same really...nor Qatar and Dubai..the results of Beijing should be replicated, but of course they won't, human beings...!
by ashkor87 Sabalenka's utter collapse in the past 4 games against Muchova is very concerning..champions should make other people collapse like that! Doesn't bode well for the rest of the year.

Ashkor, it was one set, against a player that can play out of her mind at times, after a winning streak of 15 matches. And yes, she lost four games in a row. But she had won four in a row herself to close the second and start the third (I think).

by ashkor87 nice to see Alexandrova playing well, and doing well, again.. one of my favorite players.
by ashkor87 The story of the Andreeva sisters is captivating - this is their first meeting, but they even refuse to play points in practice, apparently.. sisterhood! a lot like the Williams sisters.. though Mirra has apparently taken the lead early..in their career, I mean. It took a while for Serena to overtake Venus..

Yes, the Andreeva's are a good story. And it seems that the younger one will also be the best.

True, Although Venus was first to reach a final between them, and won their first head to head Slam final. Still never felt like she was very far behind to "pass" Venus.
Speaking of Venus, is she still not retired? I haven't heard anything yet.

Maybe she felt more awkward on court today than her big sister.
Mirra said afterwards that she thought Erika reads her game too well, so she (Mirra) was constantly second-guessing herself..
by ashkor87 Meanwhile, Pegula contines to struggle on slow courts where she gets no help from the court, has to generate her own power.. lost to Wang.
by ashkor87 Volleyers like BHM and Leylah can do well here, they have one more way to win a point...
by ashkor87 saw the QZ LF match on youtube - the court is clearly too slow for Fernandez.. QZ was able to reach even Leylah's put-away volleys.. making it difficult to win points.. Leylahd needs the court to help her, this one did not.
by ponchi101 I am serious here.
How do you reconcile the courts speed theory with the fact that Leylah won the first set, was competitive in the second, and then got creamed in the third? It is not as if the court speed could change during the match.
And she had beaten Zheng twice, so it is not as if this is an opponent that has her number.
To you, how was court speed a factor for two players that are reasonably similar?
And again, I am not picking on you. But I am curious about your train of thought.
(BTW. As I write this, BHM is also in deep trouble.)

From what I saw, QZ began to read her volleys better as the game went on, and Leylah could not put them away...the playing styles of the two are not similar at all.
by ashkor87 BHM yes, I didn't see the highlights, so I don't know, but I imagine the same story there..BHM unable to put the ball away..
by ashkor87 On a slow surface, volleying does help if you don't have huge power. Doesn't mean you can win the match just by going up there . . Especially if your opponent reads you well and gets to them
But someone like Leylah has no other option..she isn't powerful enough to hit through the court ..like Keys or Qz or ...
by ashkor87 If Sabalenka goes to the net often against Coco today, it won't work..Coco is too quick, she will get to a lot of them. Sure, Saba can go up there to put away the ball, which the stats will count as a volley ..but it isn't, really..anyone can put away the nice high, soft balls. But actually, on Coco's forehand, she will get some of those, it may work, but not against Coco's backhand.
by ashkor87 On this slow court, Sabalenka should be able beat Coco..if they meet at the AO I would bet on Coco. Let us see...!
by ashkor87 Coco had 21 dfs!!
by ponchi101 Coco with 21 DF's. And she still lost 6-4 in the third.
And one of those matches in which the loser won more points and more games.
No info on how many volley winners.
by ashkor87 Coco had only 3 dfs in the first set, which she won easily.. 9 each in the second and third sets..both of which were close.. if she had held her double faults to single digits...!!
by mick1303 DF are not happening by themselves out of the blue. Rather out of fear that weak 2nd serve will be punished. Apparently in case of Sabalenka as an opponent this fear is more justified.
by mick1303 It looked that midway 2nd set Coco no longer chased the balls, she was chasing in the first half of the match.

DF are not happening by themselves out of the blue. Rather out of fear that weak 2nd serve will be punished. Apparently in case of Sabalenka as an opponent this fear is more justified.
Sabalenka will certainly punish any weak second serve. But I believe the DF's are not always due to fear. I think Coco may have a technical issue. She has a very fast arm (she can serve at 115 MPH constantly) but I don't know if she can translate that into proper spin.
by JTContinental The DFs were not of the same variety that she had during the year. She was really going for her second serve, which is part of her coach’s new game plan for her

by ponchi101 So much for worrying about Sabalenka's mind state after Beijing. A close match, but she is the best on hard courts, by a reasonable margin.
by ponchi101 A strange but pretty looking trophy.
