by dave g Here are the picks. If your picks are red, then one of your picks has lost and you are out of the contest.
Note: I am shortening Mpetshi Perricard's name to Perricard. Some people had written just "Perricard", and it is easier to make names match by deleting parts then by adding parts.

Commentary :
Since Fucsovics and Medjedevic won before I wrote this, they were obviously good picks.
Other probably good picks: Borges, Marozsan, Perricard, Nakashima, Machac, and Shelton
Might be too early: Paul
Probably a tough match: Van de Zandschulp, Tiafoe, Brooksby, Comesana, Opelka, and Michelsen
Don't know enough: Gigante, Dzumhur, Kopriva, and Montiero
Not looking good: Halys (You have picked against a seeded player. I hope you know what you are doing.) (Turns out to have been an amazing pick.)
We have picks on both sides of the following matches
T.Machac (21) vs Q.Halys
V.Kopriva vs T.Monteiro

Commentary
Only nine dead out of 110, that is very good result! Good going!
At a glance, my first thought was that these were good picks, but I noticed a few things:
1) We have picks on both sides of
M.Kecmanovic vs S.Baez
S.Ofner vs JL.Struff
Giron vs Griekspoor
2) I don't know Atmame enough to know if he is a safe pick against Gasquet.
Probably good picks: Davidovich Fokina, Khachanov, Lehecka, Humbert, Popyrin, Cerundolo F., Gaston,Tsitsipas, and Tabilo
Picks that might have tougher matches: Shapovalov, Bu, Carabelli, Fils, and Griekspoor
by ptmcmahon Our biggest bandwagon of the day is now down a break in the fifth set... after winning the first two sets 6-3, 6-2.

The bandwagon had a hiccup in set 3, but won in 4 sets. Thank goodness. i was on that wagon!!!
by ptmcmahon Oops, yeah that was only 4th set. Whew.
by Wolfie0890 First time I’ve only totaled one other common person
in my first two picks (Dzumhur/Tabilo). Luck? Probably. It’s early.
by ashkor87 Fils kept me on tenterhooks throughout the evening yesterday.. I should really learn not to pick people I dont know much about.. But he is quite good, I must say - just not the budding champion some people make him out to be.

by pudding I’m a little confused. How can you pick Shelton after he already “won”? Does this mean we could all have picked him last night AFTER he got the walkover?

This is mostly because I had forgotten a rule that is invoked so seldom that I forgot that it existed. From now on, your pick will need to actually start the match to be valid.
by IronMike What happens if the Walkover comes after lock?

What happens if the Walkover comes after lock?
Hmmm, good question. Technically, if the walkover is not announced until after play has started somewhere, i.e. after lock, then the pick should be valid. My main concern will be if I am going to be able to determine when the walkover decision is made well enough to know that the decision was made after play has starrted somewhere, as opposed to when the walkover decision is announced. We want to reward the ability to predict match winners, as opposed to rewarding the ability to hear about walkover decisions before the rest of the public.
I will welcome comments and suggestion on this issue.
by
ptmcmahon If the walkover is announced after play starts I don't see how you could penalize someone. But like you say then you have to figure out when it was announced and it becomes a mess
Plus, think of late rounds where to beat draw you may "have" to pick that player.
by mmmm8 It's pretty simple in my view, if a match ends in a w/o after start of play, then the player that advances in the draw "won" and the player that withdrew is out of the tournament. This is also how we've treated it historically in the SP.
by ponchi101 I say.
Anything after play starts is not controlled by our members. So, picks should stand. Picking a W/O before play starts should not be allowed, if multiple options are available.
by texasniteowl The problem is timing. This is global. So we deal with times and time zones. Let's say the schedule is made. Let's say a w/o is announced 2 hours before the beginning of play. That is the middle of the night somewhere. So if someone picked the person who benefits from the w/o before the w/o was announced are we saying their pick is invalid? Even if that meant they were sleeping because the w/o was announced at 2a.m.?
I'm not sure there is a totally good answer...

Yes, there's not a fully fair solution. But, IMHO, the least unfair solution is that if a match is no longer on the schedule of play at start of play, that match is ineligible. While this can penalize people who were sleeping/working/etc. vs those who saw the last-minute withdrawal announcement and picked from another match, the opposite would be even less fair (letting someone advance without a valid match pick for the day.
And, yes, I am still angry for Gasquet withdrawing from the 2007 US Open with a cough minutes before start of play.
by janebowles Also, I think this walkover was a bit unusual in that it came so far in advance.
Thanks as always for organizing. I crashed out with Tsitsipas. Good luck...

I agree with everything that has been said. The proper cut-off time is the start of play. If a withdraw happens after the start of play, then the winning player is a valid pick. If the withdraw happens before the start of play, then the winning player is not a valid pick. I also agree with texasniteowl that this is not an ideal rule, and that some people's ability to make valid picks might be impaired because the time zone they live in. However, I also agree with mmmm8, in that this is the least unfair solution to the problem. I also know that mmmm8 has been around for a long time and probably has the best rememberance of how the rule has been applied in this situation, historically.
Thanks everyone, for your input.
by ashkor87 Seems the only fair solution
by ashkor87 Perricard is a strictly second-rate player, after his serve, there is nothing - all his shots look shaky.. I was cursing myself for picking him on day 1 but there were few good options so I survived.. but too many people backed him in the scond round! The decline of Tsitsipas is sad, to say the least.. he is a fun player to watch.. oh well.

For better or worse, all TAT contests will have slight advantages to people in right time zones, or able to be online right at deadline. Especially Biggest Loser when there is a qualifying match going on right before main draw
And we had a good example of how it can become sticky just last year at FO when Djokovic withdrew before quarterfinal making that match unpickable. Was just bad luck for anyone who needed it to beat draw, although it wound up just making a big 8-way tie anyway.
I even said "Ruud won't be playing so you won't be able to pick him tomorrow. If Djokovic had withdrawn after the thread was posted you probably could have made the pick before he withdrew."

I love how quickly you dismiss players after a single loss.
Perricard has reached #29 in the world, at age 20. Yes, the serve is a bazooka, but the FH is also very big. And, at this age, he has already won 2 titles.
I don't want to speak for the others that died yesterday with this pick, but I picked him because, while Perricard is "only" a serve, what is Dzumhur? No weapons, a lot of defense, but this is a player that is coming back, at age 30, from an infection (I think) so severe that he could have died. Plus, the winner got to play Alcaraz in the next round.
If Perrricard gets to move into the top 10 in a couple of years, ala Draper, I will not be surprised. He has weapons. The consistency is what is missing, as we sadly learned yesterday.
by ashkor87 It is not the loss, it is his game, as seen by my own eyes!
have you actually seen the match? If you have, I am sure you would agree with me... he has no game, he is just a serve-bot.
by ponchi101 I have seen him play. The serve is huge. The FH is also a big and the BH, to me, is lovely, because it is a good looking one hander.
His consistency makes Laconte look rock solid. He is a very good example of the French school: gorgeous strokes, a madman juggling two chainsaws at the same time.
The age in which serve-bots could reach a high ranking just because of their serve is over. You need something else to reach #29.
by ashkor87 I completely disagree. But that is fine.
by jazzyg I'm with ashkor on this one.
I've noted multiple times how few points Perricord wins on his opponent's serve. Sometimes it is less than one point put game for an entire match. HIs return of serve is particularly wretched, and while he does have a big forehand, his footwork is extremely poor and his attention to detail is subpar.
His serve is good enough to win matches by itself, but he will have to improve significantly in every other aspect to be a real factor.
