Back in March, Yastremska faced a similar ordeal upon arriving in the U.S. ahead of Indian Wells, revealing she was nearly deported to Ukraine due to a lost passport that allegedly invalidated her visa under U.S. customs regulations. For now, her participation in the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati and the US Open remains uncertain.

She rolled her ankle at the end of the match - it's not clear if she will be able to play her next match.

by ashkor87 this court is rated significantly slower than average.. look for Anisimova, Swiatek, even Rybakina to do well here..Rybakina and Anisimova needa little more time to hit their shots, and neither is the quickest mover out there.. Swiatek is.. Swiatek... not clear how Coco will do, didnt do all that well at IW, where the court was slow, but did do well at RG, so who knows.. her game is adaptable enough..though I still think she will do better at Cinci than here, because the court there is significantly faster.

by jazzyg The Siegemund-Maria match on T2 was entertaining. I believe 163 points were decided at the net, which has to be a modern-day record. Some points had both of them at the net in volley exchanges.

Siegemund blew four match points over three games in the second set when I had not started watching but pulled it out 7-2 in the third-set tiebreak. The funny thing is they were playing for the right to face Madison Keys, whom both of them beat on grass recently.

by ponchi101 163 points is indeed such a high count that you may be (most likely) right. I gather you would need to look for a Navs/Mandlikova or Mandlikova/Khode-Kilsh to find a count of points at the net that high.
Maybe Navs/Sukova in that memorable Aussie semi.

by ashkor87 saw a bit of Osaka's match - court does seem slow, Osaka took full advantage by winding up for some of the biggest forehands I have seen in a long time.
Should suit Osaka, Anisimova, Swiatek, Samsonova and Rybakina too, all of who enjoy having a little extra time to whack the ball..Gauff, Pegula, Raducanu dont need it, they would prefer the ball to come on to them fast.. Andreeva, I am not sure, will have to wait and see, she seems very versatile.

saw a bit of it, very good! Both players realize that on a slow court, volleying is a viable way to win a point, espeically if you dont have the power to blast through the court.

by ashkor87 Pegula's back to back Rogers Cup wins are even more impressive when you consider that one was in Montreal, the other in Toronto - both quite different courts! (at least, so I imagine.. havent checked)

by JTContinental Rumors of Yastremska's visa issues seem to be untrue, as she is oncourt right now.

by ponchi101 Paolini's magic summer of 2024 looks pretty far away now. She lost to Ito, 7-5 in the 3rd set TB.
That's how difficult sustaining that level is. She won Rome and since then it has not been fun. Let's see if she can come back to her form.

by ptmcmahon She won Rome and made semis at Miami. She isnt at the same level as last summer but doesn't feel like she's slipped too much. Obviously bad loss today though.

by ti-amie Paolini was a virtually unknown player on the ITF circuit. Now she's expected to make the quarters if not the semi's when she plays. Not to mention off court distractions.

This was bound to happen but I hope she gets people around her who will keep the noise at bay so she can focus on her tennis.

She split with her coach after an early loss at Wimbledon - so it probably wasn't the coach.

by ti-amie I've been looking and so far haven't found video of the very bad call against Canadian Carson Branstine during the third set of her match vs Sakkari. She wasn't allowed/couldn't register a challenge according to the comm because you can't argue with a machine.

The official reason was that she hit the ball but if I remember it correctly she didn't put it in play.

by ti-amie Apparently yesterday was a mess. A fan posted this on the big WTA fan site. When the players are ignoring the ELC there's a huge problem.
Obviously nobody who has posted in this thread watched Cirstea v Sun yesterday. Cirstea served an "ace" down the middle in the first game, which umpire Aline Rocha entered into the system because there was no "fault" call, only to see both players agree that it WAS a fault and for Cirstea to serve again (she won the great rally on her second serve anyway).

by ashkor87 Too many mistakes by the electronic line calling system...why not compromise by going with the electronic system but empower the umpire to correct/overrule an obvious error...that would not require rehiring of dozens of people, and the umpire is anyway sitting there...

by ti-amie This third set between Gauff and Collins has been a war. Gauff is up 5-4 now but was up 4-2 earlier.

by ashkor87 Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito drew Jasmine Paolini into her web of forehand slices and unpredictable shot selection to pull off a comeback from match point down in the Omnium Banque Nationale second round, posting her first career Top 10 win. https://www.wtatennis.com/news/4328120/ ... n-montreal

If this is how it went, a good coach could certainly have saved Paolini..by reminding her again and again not to panic, not to press too hard...

by ti-amie Gauff wins the war 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(2) over Collins who served for the match. Gauff had 74 unforced errors to Collins 80 in the 2h54m match.

Image

by ti-amie The 18 year old Victoria Mboko will play Sofia Kenin next.

by ponchi101 Coaches take too much credit, and take too much blame.
Paolini is a 27 year old veteran. If she still needs to be reminded not to panic, it is not the coaches. Especially for a top 10 player that has gone very deep at slams.

Sooner or later this is going to happen on a huge point of a match. Set point or Match point. It will then be played over and over on TV and social media. And it will not be funny.

by JTContinental Paolini is just coming back down to earth. There was a lot of favorable draws that took her to those slam finals—she only played one seed before the FO final and it was a reeling Rybakina, and then only Keys (who retired in their match) and Emma Navarro before the Wimbledon final.

That's very unfortunate - Tennis Canada may not be able to hang on to the event for much longer.

by ashkor87 interesting matchups tomorrow - Osaka vs Samsonova, Pegula vs Sakkari..I dont expect Pegula to lose but Osaka might - Samsonova is very formidable on a slow-medium court like this..she has as much power as Osaka, will that be enough? we shall find out.

Yes, it sounds like because of its location in a very busy section of the city, remodeling isn’t really in the cards. There was a brief window during the pandemic where changes could have been made, but nothing happened.

https://tennisuptodate.com/tennis-news ... n-montreal

I also read somewhere else that there are only 4 courts of enough quality to play professional tennis on and players have to navigate through an annoying series of chain link fences just to get to them, but have not verified.

Having spent a fair amount of time in the venue I think the chain link fence thing is an exaggeration. Many tennis courts have chainlink around them, but the venue being crampt by the surrounding park is true. Toronto has the same problem. The problem for both sites is that Tennis Canada will never have the money that the private investors that own most of the other 1000 events have to spend on the type of upgrades required.

Hard to know - I've never seen a list of ATP license agreements to know when they expire. We tend to think of the big tournaments as not moving, but the ATP 1000 events have shifted over the years from time to time.

In what way is Montreal the worst event on tour? The facilities specifically? (I heard on a podcast that they don't have enough practice courts for the expanded 96-player field, so are shuttling some players to another tennis facility (where they've put down the same surface) ten minutes away.) Not fan support, I would think.

Meanwhile Genie Bouchard is looking to stave off retirement again, now up a break against Bencic in the third set (and has been playing very well).

by martini4me And, predictably enough, after playing top-tier tennis for a set and a half, she really drops off and gets broken two out of three service games, as soon as I posted that.

This wont help Montreal’s rep as the worst venue on the tour
In what way is Montreal the worst event on tour? The facilities specifically? (I heard on a podcast that they don't have enough practice courts for the expanded 96-player field, so are shuttling some players to another tennis facility (where they've put down the same surface) ten minutes away.) Not fan support, I would think.

Meanwhile Genie Bouchard is looking to stave off retirement again, now up a break against Bencic in the third set (and has been playing very well).
As far as I know, it’s been common knowledge that players on both tours hate this event when it’s their turn in Montreal, mainly because of the facility. I’ve heard commentators talking about this frequently since at least the early 2000’s. I linked to an article written by someone who trains there on the last page which details most of the reasons, but they are largely logistical and not related to the actual running of the event itself or lack of fan support.

by ponchi101 Well, Genie is gone.
A career that must have some lessons for younger players. What happened to a player that reached SF/SF/F/QF at all slams one year, and then, was unable not even to get more tractions, but to even come close to that.
She was legit in 2014. And I don't think it was the fame or the spotlight. Something happened with her tennis. And that has to be examined.
Wish her the best.

by ashkor87 She hit her head in the usopen locker room .never the same after

by JTContinental Still ranked #12 in pickleball

Nice to see her score one last win on her way out

by ashkor87 Some interesting doubles pairings.. ostapenko with krejcikova, pegula with keys..I don't know how good Keys is at doubles, but the others are all top-notch...osta's power with krejcikova's touch looks like s good combination

by Owendonovan A mere 19 games of DF's.

by ashkor87 And yet she wins! Shame on her opponents..

Exactly.
The math is simple. She is basically giving you one free point per service game. She starts every game 0-15. And you still can't beat her.
How long before a coach tells her: "You will serve the entire match serving 2nd serves. Then, when you can do that and hit zero DF's, we return to first serves".
Because it can't be worse.
Second player in dire need of Mats Wilander (after he is done with Perricard).

by JTContinental Coco's biggest strength is working around her weaknesses to still win a ton of matches. I'd call it "winning ugly" but since I hate Brad Gilbert, I refuse.

by ponchi101 It's a different winning ugly. Gilbert's specialty was to make the other player play bad. Coco does not do that. She does not bring the other player's game down.

I saw a lot of this match. Mirra was out of control and had one meltdown where she repeatedly banged her thigh with her fist in frustration.

She fell in the second set and got a NFL worthy wrap on her left foot but Kessler held her nerve and won.

by ti-amie

by ti-amie I wonder if this could be the issue?
Something to keep an eye on for the NA hardcourt season: At the USO last year, 1st serve%s dipped (down to 57%) and double fault rates skyrocketed (close to Medvedev's seasonal average) due to the hard-to-control balls being used. This trend appears to be repeating itself in Canada so far.
Discussion
If you look at the completed ATP matches so far there are a ton of sub-60% 1st serve rates

Iga Swiatek in her interview on Roddick's podcast also said that the balls seem much lighter to her when practicing with them and that they're much harder to control

This also has rallying implications as well because the Cincy/USO balls last year tended to not take spin very well at all which was part of the reason certain high ranked players had massive issues keeping it in play

At first it might seem like grasping at straws but there have been some pretty clear massive swings in results among even high ranked players with different ball conditions and Iga outright said it herself

by JTContinental Gauff kournikovaed a serve so badly today, I might rename it gauffing.

by ti-amie Teenager Victoria Mboko of Canada defeated Marie Bouzkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

A slow start from Mboko but then she put on a show in front of the home crowd. Mboko is into the 4th round on her debut and will play top seed Gauff next
