Seems like the book is out on Ruud. 3 & 4 loss against Matteo Arnaldi (who?), who came in from the qualies. And this is clay, so I would say Casper has no explanations for this.

Not that bad of a loss most likely. One that Casper should win with this being his best surface, but he's clearly in a bit of a slump this season, wouldn't say it's over and done for him anytime soon. Arnaldi is somewhat of an unknown, but not for much longer. He was in the Next Gen Finals last year. He beat Munar last week and this week Paire and Fils (the talented young Frenchmen who has been on the rise recently) in addition to Ruud. I think he's about to crack the top 100 and he's pretty young, so I'm guessing we'll be adding him into the conversation of the Italian men's resurgence.

We'll have a much better idea where Ruud's game, and head are at after the French Open. He has a fair number of points to defend through till the end of the clay court season, but so far he's matched last year's results with the exception that he lost 45 points because he didn't play Munich, probably because of the changes to Rome & Madrid.

Ruud's rut strikes me as a personal issue, not really a tennis issue, distracted.

Samsonova justifying my confidence in her.. that was an impressive demolition of Ostapenko.. the players seem to find that the ball flies a bit too much at Madrid, because of the altitude, maybe doesnt suit Ostapenko's flat out hitting..
anyway, one should not read too much into Madrid.. the champion at Madrid seldom goes on to win at RG (except if his name is Nadal)..

I don't have any information about this, but there were commentators on his final Aussie Open match that felt the need to tell me something similar in a very strange and offputting way, so there definitely might be something to your theory.

Petkovic said during the Karatsev vs. Van de Zandschulp, that "Van de Zandschulp just looks perpetually disappointed by life." Absolutely dying. Not sure if she'll stick around with the commentating, but she's been growing on me. I think who she partners with matters right now, but probably won't as much later on.

Botic is Dutch. Now, I really don't want to go for the stereotypes but, when a GERMAN WOMAN says that you are perpetually disappointed by life, well... ;)
(How I wish I could listen to her. Here? Today they decided not to show any matches. NONE. Why? Football  )

Further up the topic I mentioned that Leylah's 1R loss looked very bad. JazzNu corrected me a bit, the next day Andreeva's win over BHM provided some data for that correction, today's win proved me totally wrong.
Not only she won, the score was convincing. Near-future top 20?

Petkovic was always one of the most thoughtful players around.. a bit too much into philosophy, perhaps but really insightful.. her remarks on Serena versus Osaka are very insightful too..
