by ashkor87 this is a (relatively) big tournament.. two of the most under-rated players are meeting each other now.. Samsonova vs Alexandrova.. unfortunatley, both Russian, so we didnt get to see them at W last year.. this year, who knows?.. On grass, Alexandrova's movement should be the factor that decides it - Samsonova is very good too because of her serve .. we shall see what happen.

by ponchi101 That, plus there are only two big tournaments this week, so only 64 players will cash a check.
Tough to be ranked 65 these days.

by ashkor87 Good win for Coco, and Alexandrova...

by ti-amie It was a good win for Cori. I've watched Alexandrova in the past and she seems to have the same issue as Sabalenka - losing the plot late in matches.

by JTContinental Alexandrova overhits a lot of balls when she gets tight

by ashkor87 I haven't noticed that..she squeezed out the win against Kudermetova in a tight match last week. We shall see ...

by ashkor87 Rybakina beaten by Vekic...doesn't bother me because all these prep tournaments don't anyway presage much...better to peak at W than now.

by ashkor87 and, I hasten to add, that logic doesnt apply to people like Alexandrova because Alexandrova may not even get to play Wimbledon and, in any case, I dont expect her to win the whole thing. Players like Ryabkina can focus on Wimbledon, Alexandrova cannot, she has to take whatever she can get.

by ponchi101 You keep bringing this up. Why wouldn't Alexandrova play? I did some searches on the web and there is no mentioning of any problems for Russian or Belarusian athletes. There is actually no news about the UK implementing any sort of extra requirements for citizens of those countries.
And if we are going to start nominating a WTA 500 a "Prep tournament", I would say our standards would be reaching new highs. This is obviously an important tournament to play.

by ashkor87 Coco vs alexandrova is intriguing ...will Coco's awesome defense and serve prevail against Alexandrova's aggression? I would say 55-45 Alexandrova

Even the Uk home office is saying they are scrutinizing Russians and Belarusians more..I am not making it up, I wish I was!

by ashkor87 https://www.eurosport.com/tennis/wimble ... tory.shtml

Good news is some players, like Sabalenka, have gotten their visas..so it is moving.

by ashkor87 yikes! that was a thrashing Alexandrova adminstered to Coco.. anyone see the match? what happened to Coco?

by ashkor87 just saw the highlights on the wta site.. Coco won every point!
AI clearly doesn't know much about tennis....

by JTContinental Clearly no overhitting for Alexandrova today

by ashkor87 Now Alexandrova has to play Kudermetova yet again! Must be getting tired of each other.. K beat Saba in streights...

by ponchi101 Wonder if Rybakina and/or Sabalenka will look into WC's for next week. They each got only two matches of this week, none last. I would not want to go into W with such little time on grass.

by ashkor87 Not convinced about Sabalenka on grass..she doesn't move that well, looks like a container truck trying to make a turn ...

Do they need matches? How many did Rybakina have last year?

by ashkor87 Coco had 27 UFEs on forehand...

by ponchi101 I remember that Agassi once said that, in grass, he wanted as few matches as possible, because the adjustment process affected his game. I say Sabalenka should; she did not play last year and she has not been on grass for a while.

In favor of your argument: Borg never played a single tournament in between RG and W. Pete has a "low" count of matches won on grass because he also never played on any prior tournaments.
Against your argument: Martina played almost every week prior to Wimby. Of course, her matches used to last 1 hour, so there was no reason to avoid "fatigue" (not that she was ever fatigued).

I think Rybakina's general inconsistency is the bigger obstacle to defending her title, not match play on the surface.

I really don't see any inconsistency...Rybakina has been astoundingly consistent from the AO onwards..remember, clay is not her surface yet she won the Italian...

I think she said she likes a slow surface, actually - around the time of Indian Wells. To me, if you win the Italian, you're decent enough on clay. :)

It's true that her losses haven't been bad ones - 6-4 in the third to Vekic isn't awful, but that's not a match Iga would lose on her favorite surface. She is 23-8 since the Australian, with two 1000s titles, and three of the losses were walkovers or retirements, so that's not bad on paper, you're right. Yet several of us have the impression that she isn't very consistent and not the favorite to defend her title. Hmmm.

The illness at the French was unfortunate. Really wanted to see her play Iga. She clocked Iga at IW.

In looking this up, I saw Kvitova won Miami. I had totally forgotten that.

by ashkor87 Yes, Kvitova could win again ...I think it is easier, not harder, to repeat..

by ashkor87 Tomljanovic said in breakpoint that Rybakina is the kind of player who gets better as the tournament progresses,.

We like that narrative because we have seen some players dominate there. Serena, Pete, Roger, Novak, Venus, Martina, Borg.
But, since 2004, if you take out Serena and Venus (and, admittedly, that is taking out a lot of championships) the only player that has repeated has indeed been Kvitova. Of all the other players to have won the championship (excluding Rybakina, because she is defending this time), only Sharapova reached a second final.
It is a very difficult tournament to play in.

Not arguing with you about the difficulty, but if you take out the Williamses, then there aren't many cases to judge because of some oddities.
--Halep has only played once since winning in 2019, and she lost R1
--Barty and Bartoli retired as defending champs
--Mauresmo had 3 straight semis before winning and then didn't make a second week again in three tries, but she was winding down
--Muguruza and Kerber support your theory

I gauge these things not just by winning again, but having consistent deep runs (semis/finals).

by jazzyg Halep reached the semis last year.

Kvitova, for what it is worth, has made it past the third round of Wimbledon only once in her last seven visits. She was not injured or out of form in all of those years. She just has underperformed horrendously.

by ashkor87 Kvitova is a tier1 player ..only tier1 players can be confidently expected to win majors...it will certainly take more than Alexandrova (a. Good tier 2,) to beat her!

Andreescu won Indian Wells, Canada, and the US Open - those are 3 pretty big tournaments. I don't actually know to whom you are referring to here that won only 3 tournaments so I went with Andreescu. I don't think Andreescu is a great player - she's a good player who had a great year, and has struggled with injuries throughout her career. Kvitova is a great player, and a future hall of famer.

by ashkor87 Oh I am a big Andreescu fan..I think she will come back to the top..

by ponchi101 Plus, perhaps we can make a difference too. There are some players that WERE great and were contenders, but that is no longer the case. Pliskova was a top player; that is not longer the case.
And then, you have some players that are great NOW. And I can only think of Swiatek entering that group.

You were right..Rybakina has entered Eastbourne...tough first round against Wang..

by ponchi101 It's the best thing she could have done. Her RG campaign ended early, so she had some free time, and she only played one match last week. So no worries about fatigue, and on grass, she will have quicker matches. Better to go to W with two or three this week.

by ashkor87 Oh well, now she is out with a virus.
