by JTContinental CAUTION: As TMQ is self-epmployed, he does not do 8 am PST so it may be a couple of hours before you see your picks here.

Welcome all to the 2023 USOSP! TMQ will be here to guide you through your journey from hopeful ingenue to tired showgirl, not with gentle platitudes, but with gentle snark reminding you to keep your chin up despite your penchant for poor choices. Remember, when you're red, you're dead, but until then, enjoy the atmosphere!

by G2gaynor So there's 56 people that are living pretty dangerously on the first day.

by JTContinental Mertens pickers are through

TMQ is watching Mirra Andreeva and she has no gameplan beyond trying to blast Gadecki off the court, which is not working at all.

by jazzyg Mertens saved three match points at 4-5, 0-40 in the third set.

by JTContinental I stopped watching because the match was so bad, but Andreeva was able to pull it out.

by JTContinental Fairly low casualty list for day 1

by nelslus I watched some of Bouzkova kind sneak out a 5 & 4 win over Krueger. Not exactly an inspirational performance from Bouzkova. And, if Krueger had just cut down on a few of her unforced errors....

Nevertheless- today's fellow Bouzkova pickers- you are welcome. :gorgeous:

by JTContinental After 7 no picks and 1 zombie are discounted, we still have 150 players for day 2

The breakdown

by nelslus 19 Rebecca pickers can now proceed to the Loser's Lounge....

by JTContinental Honestly, they could have strolled right on over there after making their pick

by ptmcmahon She was a pretty big betting favorite actually - although I never would have done it :)

by JTContinental I guess bookies haven't seen Marino choke before?

by PeterSkan I was very tempted. This was a good opportunity for Rebecca. In the end I couldn't justify the risk. Head over heart and I went with a safer bet.

by JTContinental Tune in tomorrow to marvel at the USO Round One Edition of STANK or DANK to find out if your losing pick is as STANK as the air in an outer court bordering the park, or as DANK as the stuff that's causing the smell.

by dollymix I picked Marino based on Tig's 1-5 record on hard courts this year (with the only win over a Brit who hasn't even earned a Wikipedia page yet, which counts for like a third of a win).

by JTContinental 108 players remain after 2 more no picks today

Day 3 breakdown

Belinda Bencic 37
Victoria Azarenka 16
Jelena Ostapenko 14
Beatriz Haddad Maia 13
Sorana Cirstea 9
Lauren Davis 7
Danielle Collins 3
Jennifer Brady 2
Elise Mertens 2
Karolina Muchova 2
Magda Linette 1
Rebecca Masarova 1
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 1

by nelslus JUST like the Townsend/Haddad Maia match- I wanted NOTHING to do with the Vika/Zhu match. The Azarenka pickers were in the wrong decade for this choice. Zhu is so talented.

Mind you, I could have already doomed myself. Any/all of the players I've already chosen could make a run in the draw.

AND, BTW- I want NOTHING!!!! to do with the next matches for my choice. :freaking:

by JTContinental The people have waited long enough! Here is the R1 edition of STANK or DANK, where TMQ will dissect your losing pick, and deem it to be either as STANK as the tube of fish paste a woman was lovingly squeezing onto a cracker while sitting next to me the last time I attended the USO, or as DANKas the underside your ball cap after spending a day in the hot sun in the treeless grounds where the Open is played. And now it is time to do just that!

Rebecca Marino (19 victims) STANK TMQ is rarely shocked, but the fact that the bandwagon piled onto the back of Rebecca Marino, who until last year had only won 1 match here (she now has wins). On paper it may seem that Marino had the advantage, but in reality she is...less than a mental giant. With so many matches to choose from, her track record of choking should have steered you away from making this pick.

Donna Vekic (6 victims) DANK Whatever magic Pam Shriver has been whispering in Vekic's ear this year appears to be wearing off, as Vekic's results have tapered off. Nevertheless, she should have easily handled Vickery.

Anna Blinkova (4 victims) STANK Anna only won 1 match this summer against mentally shattered Zhang, whose matches are currently glorified walkovers. Burrage has had some decent results lately. But you made your choice, blinked, and your tournament was ova.

Elisabetta Cociaretto (4 victims) DANK Cocciatretto should have won this based on current form, but Juvan a tough out that has been ranked as high as 58 and seemingly working her way back up.

Alize Cornet (4 victims) STANK Cornet used to be a reliable first round pick, but I think the French players must have made a pact with the devil that has now expired, because none of them can win a match anymore.

Irina-Camila Begu (3 victims) DANK TMQ will award this a light dank since we don't know what a Tamara Korpatsch is.

Veronika Kudermetova (3 victims) STANK "My pick is so STANK I'm going to flush it straight down the toilet," you must have said before selecting Kudermetova, whose long, long string of early round losses includes one to a hobbled 43-year old woman.

Anastasia Potapova (3 victims) DANK Potapova has only had 1 first round loss all season, and lucky you, it was right here!

Kateryna Baindl (1 victim) STANK Did you have some inside information here? If not, choosing from this match was your first mistake. Also, Schmiedlova is the better player of the 2.

Madison Brengle (1 victim) STANK Of all of TMQ's years running these pools, this is the only time I can remember that anyone has ever picked Madison Brengle to win a tennis match. Now we know why.

Caroline Garcia (1 victim) STANK See Alize Cornet--Garcia must be the Supreme in this French tennis witches' coven.

Julia Grabher (1 victim) STANK Eliminated before the tournament even started, as Julia pulled out on the day of her match after the start of play. I suspect you want to Grabher by the neck and squeeze until she is a lifeless as you in this game.

Varvara Gracheva (1 victim) STANK She willingly joined the French coven earlier this summer, so must suffer the consequences.

Barbora Krejcikova (1 victim) STANK Big 4, my @$$ (is there an echo in here?)

Yulia Putintseva (1 victim) DANK Trevisan decides to win 1 match outside of the French Open, and you were the dubious beneficiary of her decision (TMQ Note: Trevisan's non-Roland Garros record has been exaggerated for comic effect, but not by much).

Maria Sakkari (1 victim) DANK? Sakkari is spiraling, but should have handled this match easily (although they went three sets in Spain this year). TMQ suspects Masarova invited her friends to hang out in the fringes of Flushing Meadows to spark up joints during the match.

Mayar Sherif (1 victim) STANK Zhu wins this match all day. She is at least a future top 20 player just waiting to break through.

Katerina Siniakova (1 victim) STANK Siniakova pulled out of a tournament last week with an injury, so she may not be playing at 100%--enough concern to maybe have picked from a different match.

Venus Williams (1 victim) STANK This match never happened

Cracked me up.
But you are right. Right, FRENCH tennis relies on Mannarino. Which says a lot.

JTContinental wrote: Wed Aug 30, 2023 10:20 pm STANK as the tube of fish paste a woman was lovingly squeezing onto a cracker while sitting next to me the last time I attended the USO,
At my first USO, a woman sitting next to me was curling her eyelashes and shouting, "Is that Andre Agassi?"

by JTContinental Down to only 65 players after yesterday's bloodbath and 2 no picks. We also had a whopping 4 zombies, at least 2 of whom have played this contest long enough to know better. Please don't make picks when you know yours has lost just because I have gotten around to the reddening. It is an administrative headache.

Due to technicalities, we must list them. Nothing stops us from listing them in red. ;)

Apologies--I thought I had already posted it this morning, but did not actually do so. It is up now.

TMQ regrets the error

by sokol No problem, I just wanted to see if I have to remember to do my pick in the morning )), and I would prefer to do it tonight, so I don't forget.

Thank you!

by jazzyg One of the main reasons I picked Minnen today was to see what JTContinental would say in the writeup for the second round if she lost, although someone else surprisingly picked her, too.

The snarky comment would have been fun, but alas, it won't happen after Minnen saved two break points at 3-4 in the third set and won the next two games to get past fellow qualifier Vickery.

That other Minnen picker was me, and that was not for kicks but after serious thought. One co-player friend was baffled by my choice and another urged me to change pick, so I considered shifting to Haddad Maia. Eventually, I refused to suffer from pick changer's remorse and stuck with the Venus beater. Lucky decision...

Yeah, it looked like a good pick to me on paper, but there's a reason I've never gotten a medal in a women's Survivor Pool. Invariably when I try to be the smartest guy in the room, I lose, sometimes in smackdown fashion. I watched the second half of that match last night and there was nothing between them. Could have gone either way.

NOW the problem is- we may have picked ye olde calculated risk too soon. :freaking:

by ponchi101 nah, she plays Iga next. That's the reason you picked her in the first place.

by nelslus Fun Fact: At this moment in time- every single player I've picked so far is still alive in this Open. :freaking:

by ponchi101 All the ones I picked are alive too, except the one that killed me ;)

by JTContinental And now it's time to celebrate the Round parade of losers, who were clamoring at the door to see who could die first. But was your pick as STANK as a pile of Frances Tiafoe's discarded shirts during the course of one match, or as DANK as Frances Tiafoe changing his shirt on court? FInd out below

Victoria Azarenka (16 victims) STANK This isn't 2012, but the soon-to-be-dead still flock to pick Azarenka even though she's never been the same feisty player since her unfortunate baby daddy drama.

Karolina Pliskova (14 victims) A half-hearted DANK. Always a popular early round pick Pliskova's results are so random and streaky now that it's no longer a sure thing that she'll get by an lower-tier opponent you've never heard of.

Beatriz Haddad Maia (13 victims) DANK This was TMQ's pick, and since he is never wrong, it was Haddad Maia who is in error here.

Lauren Davis (7 victims) The faintest whiff of STANK as TMQ can see why you would select from this match as the winner would serve as cannon fodder for Iga in the next round, but with a 1-1 H2H and their nearly identical best results in grand slams, why pick from this match when you could have chosen Azarenka...er, Pliskova, er, Haddad Maia...er, never mind, great pick!

Danielle Collins (3 victims) DANK TMQ can appreciate a big swing and miss, and given Mertens comparatively poor past couple of seasons, it could have happened.

Clara Tauson (2 victims) STANK No way--TMQ mentioned at Wimbledon that Stearns is rocketing up the rankings and with Tauson not match-tough after coming back for injury, this was a slam dunk for Peyton.

Yafan Wang (2 victims) STANK While picking against a Brit is usually a sure ticket to the next day, Boulter has more talent than her compatriots, and is more than game to take out a 29-year old qualifier who has never made it past the second round here.

Rebecca Masarova (1 victim) STANK I guess her friends ran out of weed after the Sakkari match...

Magda LInette (1 victim) STANK Magda seems content to fade back into obscurity after next year's Australian Open.

Lesia Tsurenko (1 victim) STANK The biggest surprise here is that Tsurenko actually played two matches here without retiring in either one.

by ponchi101

In that section- at least with my choice for tomorrow for now, and my next anticipatory pick- I pretty much need Coco to beat Granny Blonde, then Muchova to win two matches (IF Wang wins, I'll need HER to win her next two matches), and then pray I still have options for the SF. Unless I am neglecting to factor something in here. :freaking:

Out of fairness and Pool Compassion- JT and all moderators- I suggest never listing any Pliskova match again during any Pool. :gorgeous:
Hear hear ... never picking her again :bang:

by jazzyg Zheng was down 4-2 and a game point for 5-2 to Bronzetti after being up 2-0 in the third set, but she came back and won 6-4. Whew!
