I’m pumped for Coco-Andreeva, Shelton-Thiem, and Kvitova-Wozniacki. I’m eager to see how Ajla plays in her first match back in a while.

My calculations: No nighttime crowd, knowing she didn't play her best Monday, tougher opponent than Monday, playing the newer teenage phenom who took a set off her last month and bailed Coco out by having a meltdown. If Andreeva plays her best, it will be a test. But Coco will have a great game plan from her coaches after the Wimbledon match.

by ashkor87 Collins should have won the first set 6-2 but ok, she won it..she will win this match comfortably...

by ashkor87 She will trouble Coco too

by Fastbackss Going from a night match monday to opening the day session today - is that common? (Talking of coco)

Andreeva played much better than I've seen in her last few matches, especially with her on-court attitude, but shot selection and second serve are both pretty big weaknesses for her still.

I care a little bit - which is why I'm in the loser's lounge having a drink (or two). But, a great result for her and I am happy that she is having a good tourney. I have always liked her.

She double-cheeked me, but happy for her. Would be happier if I thought she'd capitalize on this instead of losing to Muchova in the next round. But maybe Muchova will be hurt. 50/50 chance.

LOL, as bizarrely competitive as, deep down, I am with all of these pretty little imaginary trophies and medals- ultimately, I am, of course, a bigger tennis fan. I'll always root for my favorites- even when I've "voted" against them in a TAT Pool.

Plus- now, please, please, please, please- I look forward to you belittling yourself and others in your very own 2023 USOSP Women's Picks and Results Thread, OH, I can just smell the masochistic flop-sweat now.... :gorgeous:

Seriously, this was one of many match-ups I wasn't gonna touch with a 10-foot poll- unless there were no other options. On an average day, sure, Taylor would lose against Haddad Maia- as Taylor often does in singles. But, she's too much of a big-match Slam player to pick against here in a Pool.

by nelslus In today's- and, arguably, for this whole tournament's- most monumental upset- Rajeev and Joe won a match.

Ponchi- we may have to schedule an extra 15 minutes with our practice session now, to be on the safe side. :gorgeous:

OF course, most teams would be thrilled to have the year that Rajeev and Joe have had- and being able to play any tournament that they want. But, yes- it's been, for their level- a huge slump year for them- at Slams and regular tour events- albeit, they won one tournament and made the final of another. Indeed, this year has been bad lighting for them.

LOL, truly, I thought was was very indicative of their year when I saw that both Rajeev and Joe have signed up for US Open mixed. i mean, HEY- give yourself the very slight chance that you might win a Slam title this year. For awhile, Rajeev and Joe almost always played the mixed. The past few years, Joe has played mixed now and then. But, I believe the last time Rajeev played mixed was when Rajeev and Alice Marble got a WC. :gorgeous:

by nelslus ....Meanwhile, Tsitsipas was up 2 sets to 1. Stricker got an early break- then, Tsitsipas broke back twice, and I believe was serving for the match in the 4th set at 5-3. Now....Stricker wins the 4th set tiebreaker.

....Meanwhile, ESPN+ is on the fritz. :bang:

by ponchi101 Kind of surprised about Stricker's serve. He is a lefty, yet his slice wide is non-existent.
I don't expect them to be Mac or Martina, but man, you are left handed? Pull that player wide.

True of far too many players. USE what should be a huge advantage. (*Especially as we all know that all left-handed people have turned away from the graces of God.)

by nelslus AND Stricker takes it 6-3 in the 5th. Last game, Stricker went down love-30 and had to save one break point- some nervous points. But, he played big when it mattered. WELL done.

And, add Tsitsipas can be added to the growing Take a Break Time Club.

It's because he has a habit of losing quickly after his new girlfriend is out of the tourney. He can't wait to be back to getting his hair braided by Paula to focus on tennis. Can't say I blame him :D

No girlfriend, no daddy. Even the presence of his brother Lesser Tsitsipas didn't provide enough support for Better Tsitsipas. No wonder he lost.

According to Chrissy, Tomljanovic has been try to comeback since the French Open, and kind of forced it to play here. Ajla told her before the tournament she was only at 80%.

The people who moderate the r/tennis subreddit took the post down due to issues with moderation.

The people listed were Thiem, Eubanks, Jabeur, John McEnroe, Ruusuvuori, Juvan.

by jazzyg I was all ready to post about the Chinese women being 8-0 at the U.S. Open, but lo and behold, I see Pera came back from the brink of defeat to win in three over Xiyu Wang now that I'm checking scores.

There were only five Chinese women in the draw--Lin Zhu, Xinyu Wang, Xiyu Wang, Yafan Wang and Quinwen Zhang. The latter two play their second-rounders tomorrow. Zhu pummeled Azarenka today, and Xinyu Wang outlasted Sorribes Tormo.

by ashkor87 I guess Tsitsi proves love is more important than tennis ..which we all know, but we aren't the ones giving up the prize money. But I imagine they will star in fashion magazines, so they can make up some of that loss..

by jazzyg Heck of an effort by Paul to come back from two sets down to beat Safiullin in a high-quality match. It sets up a crackerjack match between Paul and Davidovich Fokina, who was my pick to reach the semis before the tourney started.

And Vesely celebrated like he'd made the semifinals when he finally finished off the good Cerundulo in a fifth-set tiebreak after blowing a two-set lead and then coming back from a break down twice in the fifth set, including when Cerundolo served for the match at 6-5.

This is why I love the first week of slams. I believe this was Vesely's last available entry with a protected ranking (he is in the 400s at the moment), and he was overjoyed to reach the third round of a non-Wimbledon slam for only the third time. This could be career sustaining for him, and if he recovers physically (a big if), he has a good shot to beat Gojo and set up a meeting with Djokovic in the fourth round. He is 2-0 lifetime against Djokovic, so even when he loses that match decisively, he will be one of the very few active players with a winning record versus Djokovic.

Thanks for the Vesely context. Nice story for him. Hope he wins the next one.

Excuse me?! Ashkor, stuff like that can get you banned from THIS forum!!!! Next thing you know, you will say that (I don't know) CRICKET is more important than tennis, and then you will push my hand!!!

(And no, LOVE is not more important than tennis. Love is wonderful, if they love you back. Tennis is wonderful, regardless of anything :) )

by ashkor87 He he
Tennis. Is wonderful only if they hit it back?!
And I would never never say any sport is better than tennis..it is the only one I play.

by ashkor87 That was one terrible performance by Kvitova..what does it say about the current crop if someone like Wozniacki, who was roughly their peer, can come back and beat them?

by nelslus LOL, I KNEW Petra would lose. I just found out about the Petra debacle- I'd been watching other tennis matches to avoid this inevitability- and we took a lovely walk to view the beautiful Full Blue Moon- with viewable Saturn. I mean, she can't beat a player who's played only 3 tournaments in almost four years. Because, if you can actually make Petra think on the court....Pathetic. :gorgeous:

I SWEAR, I'm gonna have to go and pinch (*at least) one of you to feel better. UGGGHHHHH.

by ashkor87 Kvitova kept attacking Caro's backhand, which is downright insane.. even I know her forehand is her weaker side.. in the second set, when Kvitova switched to pounding the forehand, she did get a lot of short balls she could put away or volley.. brainless play by Kvitova
(i didnt see the whole match, only the last few minutes plus Youtube - if anyone saw something else happening, please share)

ashkor87 wrote: Thu Aug 31, 2023 3:40 am That was one terrible performance by Kvitova..what does it say about the current crop if someone like Wozniacki, who was roughly their peer, can come back and beat them?
An article in the Guardian mentions in passing that Kvitova was 'under the weather'.. sigh...

by ponchi101 When Roger Federer came back from 6 months off and won the Aussie, we said: "He WAS and STILL IS Roger Federer".
When Rafa took an extended break due to injuries and came back and won RG, we said "That is RAFA AT RG".
When Wozniacki comes back from three years off and beats the #11 player in the world, what should we say?

by atlpam We definitely shouldn't be criticizing Wozniaki's fitness level. She is still very fit and still has speed around the court. She hasn't lost the ability to make her opponent hit one more ball.

by ponchi101 One thing that I think about these comebacks.
Woman can start training with good college players, who will give them a very good workout and get them back to top WTA level. The men will only get to hit a top ATP level player when they play a top ATP player. So, the women can simulate WTA conditions before they can return to the tour. The men can't.

Ages ago, the hitting partner for Jana Novotna was a Venezuelan guy. He played futures and challengers, but was never able to break into the ATP (he did play considerable NCAA). He was talking with friends at the club I used to play, and one guy asked him, half jokingly: "So, have you ever beaten Novotna in a practice?" He replied, deadly serious: "Dude, the best she has done against me is losing 4-6. It's two different levels"

by Suliso Of course there is no overtaking pure strength of a man. Women's game is still worth watching, though.

We say, Woznaicki ain't Roger or Rafa. Wozniacki was out almost 4 years. Wozniacki most recently had lost to Gracheva- her previous loss to Vondrousova was, of course, understandable.

BY now, Petra should, yet again, be better than this.

That's what we say. :)
